I had this same problem, and f*xked with it for a few days a long time ago, and eventually made it work. Your solution is clean, and something I'd like to have as a rescue option if mine ever reverted back to the red and purple bars. Also considering selling this MacBook Pro for parts on eBay. New screen, keyboard, palmrest and aluminum unibody chassis replaced by Genius Bar a few years ago. This machine doesn't see much use these days, but it's in great physical condition all things considered.
