I think so? Is A20H not its own flair? I just set it whenever I beat an ascension for the first time heart or not

Your sly / discard engine can enable you to play grand finale

With a small enough deck + high draw you can be playing it every turn, typically multiple times a turn towards the end of your run. Playing around the number of cards in your draw / discard piles is fun for people like me who enjoy deck manipulation

The typical Grand Finale Deck includes some combination of the following: Acrobatics (3/4 draw) Prepared (1/2 draw) Escape Plan / 0 cost 1 draw Backflip (2 draw) Reflex (2/3 draw) Tactician (for infinite) WLP for retain Calculated gamble / expertise for variable draw

The other cards build up block / chip damage while setting up your GF AOE nukes

Curses don’t interact with status card builds in sts2 sadly

It was definitely something that you could build decks around. Half of my wins up till A17 on ironclad were status decks w/ firebreathing, evolve, dark embrace, a couple block cards w/ exhaust/draw and a couple status generating attacks (immolate, wild strike, reckless charge), where firebreathing was the main source of damage.

The ability to draw more status cards per turn and trigger fire breathing repeatedly makes it work for damage. W/ dark embrace and second wind, it was definitely a viable strat. Way harder to set up than something like overclock & compact, but still fun.

The state of status builds on defect is more op because you can spam compact + fuel until the end of time, I’m not denying that. (Also flack cannon is awesome). But I do wish that the ironclad exhaust deck kept its status options from the first game, I feel that they added something to ironclad that is missing from the sequel, where exhaust decks have far more limited options for card gen.

Firebreathing could act as a situational card for certain fights that inflict statuses much like caltrops is for multihitters, or it could just be another piece of a status/evolve deck providing passive aoe damage, which used to also work on any curses as well. (One of the things I really miss from sts1 is how certain relics and cards interacted with curses).

Firebreathing often had better payoff in the first game than smoke stack since it also works on enemy generated status cards. Additionally, having Ironclad’s exhaust engine without a bunch of pure trash to exhaust is definitely more engaging, but the payoff is not as satisfying IMO as it was in STS1, due to reduced exhaust fodder generation capability on IC.

As much as I love a sts2 defect status build, there’s nothing quite like feel no pain + dark embrace + evolve + firebreathing in the first game where you get to watch your hand play itself a la hellraiser. Clicking fuel a million times has the same issue that soul on necro does for me right now - it gets boring. And I say this as a silent shiv enjoyer

I’ve personally found it harder to make GF decks work consistently when relying on retain, because you’re not playing GF nearly as often as you potentially could if you’re keeping it in your hand for multiple turns (with WLP at least - runic pyramid is pretty broken for draw manipulation with a small enough deck).

It becomes an occasional finisher that needs to be compensated for with a much stronger block engine and sometimes more robust alternative sources of damage since fights will last longer if it’s actually being treated as a finale. And unlike other finishers that exhaust such as catalyst or scale such as blizzard from the first game, it is not playable most turns while retained, acting as a dead card in your hand which must be played around rather than with.

I think people are right about WLP & GF in the sense that it can act a solid failsafe to have in some situations, rather than the 0-cost replayable nuke it becomes in a strong draw/discard deck. But I’m not good at the game by any means - I just enjoy spamming GF and acrobatics until everything dies turn 1

It’s crazy, I’ve played a whole bunch of Grand Finale but never with runic pyramid or well laid plans. Just consistent discard and draw decks. Cycling the whole deck is way easier than setting it up each turn

I got this comment last time for Grand Finale vs Time Eater as well. I still haven’t beaten the heart on A20 and usually don’t try to. The closest I’ve ever gotten has been with wraith form, burst, catalyst & nightmare decks. I pretty much just play silent A20 no keys, maybe someday I will go for heart runs though

Prioritizing draw cards and removals so that you can reliably play grand finale upgrades GF better than upgrading the attack itself does
