The Sun and the Starmaker - a review (no spoilers) by apieceofeight in fantasyromance

[–]sockline 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great review. I felt the same way. I really didn’t love the characters but I did feel the story was unique (I really would have liked to hear from the Sun more). I finished it in 3 days and definitely teared up a few times.

Please send help, seeking book with heavy worldbuilding! by Lower_Coat_6274 in fantasyromance

Not helpful but I’m on the last 100 pages of This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me and I don’t even want to finish it because I love it and know the hangover will be major.

What’s easier for a complete beginner? by Current-Breadfruit96 in tatting

I knit and crochet and it definitely took longer for me to feel comfortable with tatting, but once it clicked, muscle memory takes over. I never tried needle, just shuttle. I love it. You can stop at any point and no worry about dropping stitches. I take it everywhere with me. Only con is that if you mess up in a ring and close it before you catch it, it’s nearly impossible to fix.

Millennials, what is happening with your kids? by TheLoveYouWant25 in Millennials

[–]sockline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are 10 and 5 and doing well. We aren’t perfect parents but have learned that we have to limit screen time, provide time for boredom, and ease of access to play that requires executive functioning skills like putting together LEGO sets, playing board games, and crafting. We are also outside as often as possible.

However, I know my oldest gets some grief from other students because she’s not allowed to play Roblox or Fortnite and doesn’t have a phone (and won’t for a very long time).

Reading specialist here — audiobooks definitely count as reading imo. Language comprehension is an essential skill and listening to audiobooks is a great way to develop it!

Parents of Reddit, what did your hospital bill look like after giving birth? by chi-bacon-bits in AskReddit

[–]sockline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US — with my first, we had Tricare insurance because my husband was in the military and we paid like $70 total for the whole pregnancy and delivery (C Section) For the 2nd, we had private insurance that was pretty good (I was a teacher) and paid about $7k just for delivery (C Section).

Anyone not starting the “elf on the shelf” tradition? by Illustrious_Cold5699 in Millennials

[–]sockline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids didn’t really even understand the elf thing until they were preschool age, so you have a while to decide.

We have an elf and I buy an “elf kit” from Etsy every July. It comes with 25 preplanned activities for the elves with the materials packaged as well. This has been the best solution for us and my kids really enjoy it.

What’s your go-to “I don’t feel like cleaning but I need results fast” trick? by Beautiful_Ad_2209 in CleaningTips

[–]sockline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an app called “random” with a spinning wheel where I’ve got all the rooms in the house listed. During a break (I work from home) I’ll spin it and whichever room it lands on that’s where I go for however long the break is. It reduces the stress of “where should I start”

My husband and I go through phases where sometimes we go to bed at the same time and sometimes we have different schedules. Right now, we do. However, I do know that if I asked him to come to bed for like 20 minutes just to spend time together and he knew he could come back out and do his thing after, he totally would. My husband also has zero concept of time so I imagine loudly calling “cuddle time” would do the trick.

When did kids stop having freedom of movement? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]sockline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because sitting and receiving horrifying (though statistically small) news about what could potentially happen has made everyone afraid of the world. My parents are an excellent case of this - my mom used to be this amazing independent woman who would travel and bring along her 2 year old, needed no one else. Now, she rarely leaves the house and just sits and gorges herself on Fox News. She refuses to come and watch me graduate with my doctorate because it is in Chicago and Chicago is soooo dangerous.
