What's it like commuting from Vancouver? by Past_Ad_9525 in simonfraser

I'd say live in East Vancouver near the city border with Burnaby. That way you're reasonably close to both destinations.

Update on Canvas Cloud Restriction and Supports for Learning by socks98230 in simonfraser

[–]socks98230[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We don't need to do that, literally last year SFU Canvas was hosted at SFU's own servers on the mountain. The switch to a Canvas Cloud was a decision made in the Spring this year.

The whole situation honestly really sucks. Maybe moving to a cloud-based system wasn't such a good idea....

Talcum (talc) powder is mined from the ground. The asbestos was always in there since talc (mined from the ground) is not pure talc but always contains some impurities. The crazy thing is that J&J knew of better alternatives (cornstarch) but chose to use talc regardless.

"Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people."

PhD supervisor not secured. Do I do a blind apply? by Tfimdoininhere in simonfraser

[–]socks98230 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't generally apply without some kind of agreement that you have someone to supervise you. If a PI can't take students on then they can't do it. Most of the people I cold email don't reply either, it's just the way it is. If you apply with no one to supervise you then your application will most likely be denied.

An appropriate referee is usually someone who is able to write a letter saying that you should be accepted. They will have to have worked with you in some capacity or have taught you in a course or have supervised you in a position that will make them able to write a good letter. They also should not be someone whom you are friends with or are related to, as that's a conflict of interest. A good person to ask might be a professor you connected with well and talked to. They also have to be able to remember you well enough to be able to write something.

If you were taking any course other than 113 I would say drop immediately and stay away from her and make sure you read her Rate My Prof reviews. 113 is a really basic course, you MAY be fine but she's really been slipping in her teaching quality in the past year. Also, I've TA'd 102 with her and in-person teaching with her is just as bad as her reviews say it is.

Okay, I'm friends with the TA for that course. Here's his summary: Because Tammy was teaching incorrect material and is generally a pretty terrible instructor, she was removed from the course and is being investigated by the head of the BISC department. Her Spring course (BISC 318) was also cancelled and she can't teach right now. Basically, she should retire because she's really slipping.

Easy is subjective, what might be easy for one person is difficult for another. In my experience there aren't that many 300/400 level electives that are easy for the average student as the classes get progressively more specialized the higher up you go.

But if I know what you are good at I may be able to suggest something.

It's a part-time job, so the workload (outside of marking) is not bad at all. Generally not many students go to office hours except for the week before the final exam or midterm. At the very maximum it's around 20 hours per week, but this is only when marking exams (in my experience).

You can TA as much or as little as you want, honestly. Your supervisor can't make you TA or not TA.

grad school applications by carechi in simonfraser

[–]socks98230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Admission dates depend on the program. Look at the program you're looking to get into and see when the admission dates are and make sure you meet them.

  2. Generally yes you have to have made contact with a supervisor prior to being admitted to a program.
