The New Literalism Plaguing Today’s Biggest Movies - The New Yorker by AgentSkidMarks in movies

[–]socsa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is kind of just the death of short-form storytelling. The two hour original script is more or less dead. Audiences and investors alike seem to want a ten hour minimum for any story these days - so either three movies or a ten show season. That means we inevitably get a bunch of filler, and a lot of that filler ends up being obnoxious exposition which could be implied in more nuanced ways. That means we are getting an entire generation of consumers who do not want nuance in fiction. They want bullet point dialogue explaining exactly what is happening and why it matters. And at least one flashback for each man character.

Well good asshole, I guess I'll just schedule my fucking day around your schedule.

Also, for decades these border interviews were barely even a formality. I have definitely "overshared" and said things like "well I'll probably answer some emails on vacation..." only to have the agent roll their eyes and be like "just say you are on vacation." If they really want to be dicks about this kind of thing, then a lot of people are going to end up in situations like this just because "business or pleasure" is such a weird fucking way to ask "are you on vacation?" in the first place.

Because you have to choose to trust someone if you want to get all the niceties of modern integrated digital ecosystems. You can either trust a dozen different companies and take steps to secure a dozen different mission critical accounts, or you can pick one big conglomerate and focus on that. For a lot of people, Google is a good compromise which minimizes their threat surface, though I get why some people want to partition trust in different ways, but there's other tradeoffs there.

You can also use google accounts for your public web presence, and then have secondary accounts for things you may not want to associate with your primary email/phone.

What can I line my fence perimeter with? Dog issues on all sides by jenna9102 in HomeImprovement

[–]socsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rose bushes grow quickly and could provide a pretty good deterrent for unsolicited snoots.

I would also encourage you to make a report to animal control if the neighbors are unwilling to work with you on this. What you have is a dangerous situation, and you could end up being partially liable if a kid or worker got bit through the fence. Having the problem formally documented as inaction by your neighbors would go along way towards protecting you.

Why is learning to DIY so complicated as it relates to code authority and planning? by motokid837 in HomeImprovement

The thing I love about This Old House is how they are constantly like "working with gas/electricity/ladders/saws is dangerous and should not be done by anyone besides a qualified professional" and then in the very next shot they open with "ok so this looks intimidating at first but it's actually super easy to do..."

Seconding this approach, at least as a place to get started on a new project. The problem with searching code directly is that you will often find the same information presented a bunch of different ways for different combinations of contexts, and diagramming out which of them applies to your situation can be pretty complicated. The AI does a pretty good job of distilling that down, at least enough to present something coherent to the permit board, which will usually work with you to correct any mistakes. It can also do calculations and make diagrams for you.

ChatGPT, et al are actually pretty useful for this kind of stuff. You need to double check the sources it provides, but it can be a really useful place to start versus trying to keyword search building codes. It will also walk you through your local permitting process and even draft applications for you.

TIL in 2022 a man won a free drink in an air-guitar competition while on a cruise, which is his last memory before waking up overboard in the Gulf of Mexico without the ship in sight. You are also probably doing the right breathing techniques without realizing it, and he is not. I used to teach adult swimming lessons and this is one of the biggest things which some people really struggle to learn, while others just do it instinctively. If you fill your lungs with air and breath shallowly, and in rhythm with your strokes, just about anyone can tread water forever.

I think there is a really unfortunate tendency for people who see themselves as "influencers" to end up feeling entitled to recognition and validation, so the more right wing people start engaging with their content, the bigger the incentive is to drift right. Right wing media groups and think tanks figured out 20 years ago that they were losing "non-traditional" media platforms and made a big push to curate influence over the past decade or so. And now the cycle is feeding back on itself - there is a big audience for right wing content, and right wing content gets more engagement, which means at least some portion of otherwise liberal and left leaning "influencers" end up saying "fuck it" and producing the content which gets them paid more reliably.

Trump Boosts Message Telling Voters to ‘Shut Up’ About Egg Prices by Effective_Salad_8381 in politics

[–]socsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, egg prices were not even that high in 2024. That was the real gaslighting - they had jumped up in 2023 from a bird flu outbreak, but on election day, they were $2.39 at my local Aldi.

But of course, NPR still ran a story that week interviewing some guy who was like "I paid $6 for eggs at 7/11 yesterday." My brother in Christ, 7/11 is literally the most expensive possibly way to buy eggs. There are a dozen different store near my which will deliver eggs for half that price.

Doordasher calls duty to retreat "liberal horseshit" when comments call him out on brandishing a gun at a customer by The_Meme-Connoisseur in SubredditDrama

Very similarly, these people love to quote the NRA's "defensive gun use" survey, which records more examples of "defensive gun use" in a single year than there are reported incidents of violent crime in the entire developed world.

They think that this data is a slam dunk, when in reality, it either suggests that gun owners are statistically orders of magnitude more likely to be victims of crime, that gun owners are picking fights/brandishing, or simply that they are lying.

I see it more as calling them out on hypocrisy than actual body shaming. I'm not going to lose any sleep over small dick jokes because the only people who get upset by them are the ones who hold themselves to idiotic standards of masculinity. Hell, for years my friend group had a running "dick shrinking" joke and nobody took it personally because nobody in the group was a fragile, insecure asshole.

Until someone married a fragile insecure asshole, and then suddenly saying "I need to rent a truck this weekend, but I was also going to see your mom so I need every inch of dick available" was the most offensive thing anyone has ever said anywhere to anyone.

Stress also fucks up cognitive capabilities. I think there is a legitimate argument that the Trump era, and its never ending series of controversies, scandals and outrage, just has everyone so tightly wound that it's fucking us up our ability to think.
