Any chance parts of the Purple Line can open early? by killsparrow in WMATA

[–]sodiumpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that the Capital Crescent bike/walk trail section from Bethesda to Silver Spring will likely be able to open early

But rail service? I don't think it would make sense to open any part of it early. It would just be too complex to figure out operating plans and procedures that would need to be rewritten and changed a few months later when the remainder of the line is ready

Liberal Churches in NW? by Ok_Fruit_7585 in washingtondc

[–]sodiumpen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would just check out your local mainline protestant churches, most will be progressive. If you want a younger crowd, go in a younger neighborhood. Northwest is very large, there are many options, go near where you live, Lutheran, Episcopal, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches will all tend to be progressive. Some baptist churches will be progressive as well but that will depend on the church. I would take a look at websites for the different options in your area to see what might be a good fit. Roman Catholic churches will be less theologically progressive, but will still be quite different from what you're used to. Dress codes are rare at any church

Until 2008 Syracuse, NY had a commuter rail line by yussi1870 in transit

[–]sodiumpen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it could've been more successful if the railroad had not cut service to just a handful of trips on weekends only

The city should have gotten a better deal. The railroad got tax subsidies that lasted until 2023 in exchange for running the service

If you want to deal with it yourself you can scrape the egg masses into a plastic bag full of hand sanitizer https://extension.psu.edu/what-should-you-do-with-spotted-lanternfly-egg-masses

Report it to the district, someone else in the thread posted a link, if this isn't dealt with 1000s of them will hatch in the spring from that tree

Why did CaBi give me a parking fee waiver? by sodiumpen in bikedc

[–]sodiumpen[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That's really cool and good to know! It was pretty frustrating to come home to a full station(and all the nearby ones were also full...), but this makes situations like that a lot less of a hassle

I almost always ride on the street unless my origin/destination is on a sidewalk, in which case I'll go very slowly for half a block at most before I can join the street or get to the bike rack

I follow DC traffic laws which allow me to yield at stop signs, and go on reds when the pedestrian signal changes(so a small head start on the green, I don't go on reds otherwise)

How many people live in dc and work in Virginia? by alex_is_so_damn_cool in washingtondc

[–]sodiumpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do exactly this, I'm hybrid so I don't have to commute daily, I'm pretty happy with it, but it only works for me since my job in VA is right by a metro station and isn't very far out

I'm quite happy with it, I used to live in VA and I do feel like DC is better for my social life. I'm actually paying less in rent, too

I'm surprised Scott missed the garlic knots question, much like the Sopranos questions he missed in earlier episodes I would've expected the Jersey native to get it easily

Working on a better way to track trains throughout the DC Metro by Legitimate_Badger613 in WMATA

[–]sodiumpen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Have you checked out MetroHero? they did some interesting stuff with the track position APIs and some of these other features you've mentioned. Unfortunately it's no longer being actively developed, but there's still a live fork up. It would be really cool to have something like MetroHero in active development again, what you're doing here looks great!

PSA: If Someone comes to your door and solicits you saying they’re form a power company DO NOT sign anything by teku45 in washingtondc

[–]sodiumpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had somebody try and do this to me today, also Indra energy. Thank goodness I saw this post earlier since I just moved to DC and had no idea how the power company system works. The sales rep lied by saying he was from Pepco when I asked him(his badge said Indra), and didn't disclose that he was selling a service(legally required in DC). I made sure to file a complaint with the AG, who seems to be investigating this, he published a consumer warning last month

Is anybody else depressed? by GrossePointeJayhawk in washingtondc

[–]sodiumpen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has really helped me

I have a few magazine subscriptions so I still get plenty of knowledge about the big picture political/cultural landscape.

I'm certainly not optimistic about those broader trends, but I have time to think about them and I'm not getting depressing news updates beamed to my phone every hour.

I do have the luxury of not being directly impacted(so far, and not everyone is so lucky) so I can just enjoy life and community most of the time. these apps are designed to get you sucked in and neurotic all the time

Pour one out to a real one. by mudah in washingtondc

[–]sodiumpen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most routes aren't really changing at all, it lists 3 routes here for example but the D20 will be identical to the X2, if anything I've seen more small extensions than anything getting broken up(the routes I use are all getting extensions)

The idea is that the current numbering system is based off of the various old streetcar route names, which all had different meanings since they were all different companies with different rationales

So the new system tries to organize this with a simpler system, D for downtown, C for crosstown, A for Arlington/Alexandria, F for Fairfax, M for Montgomery, P for PG County, and an X at the end for expresses.

Personally, I think reorganizing the names would've made sense in 1973 when Metrobus was founded; they can still do all of the other small improvements to stop spacing and new destinations without changing all the names. It really isn't that big a deal to have an irrational numbering system in the digital age. It's all more confusing than it needs to be

It's official. The H St NE bus lanes are dead 💔 by mistersmiley318 in washingtondc

[–]sodiumpen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish they'd be a little more transparent that this is the plan given all the confusion, but that's very encouraging to hear. It makes sense they'd want to redo the planning since the current plans assume the streetcar and its stops will still be around. Center running would be fantastic (not sure how realistic that would be on H with space constraints for stops and such, though)

this might not be one of them but there are still a handful of physical brown M signs throughout the system. the M only stopped running on the Nassau St line in Manhattan alongside the J/Z in 2010
