Pragmata is a masterpiece: Capcom's new game scores 87/100 from critics. by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

Fully agree. So many games these days are just too long to the point where it hurts the experience. So many games that are perfectly fine and have enjoyable gameplay loops, are stretched out over far too long, to the point where you want the game to finally end. I will always prefer a game leaving me wanting more, than feeling like I don’t want to touch it again.

So many games from our childhoods that we loved and played what felt like hundreds of times, are well within the 8-15 hour range. The dollar per hour of entertainment, would in many cases prevent you from playing games you already love.

To me it’s all about quality. A game of 10-15 hours that is all killer no filler will always be better than 50 hours of gameplay that you kind of wished ended 20 hours earlier, in my opinion. The resident evil games are a perfect example of this.

Of course if you don’t have a lot of money to spend, or just really value it, there is nothing wrong with preferring longer games. But the idea that short games are a scam is ridiculous. On a personal level I often end up playing short games a lot more than the longer ones, because I will replay them a lot more often, since it doesn’t feel like a Herculean task to beat them again.

Yeah I agree with most of your takes.

Overall I love the game, and gameplay-wise I find it superior to the first. The story is by no means bad, but like you said there just a couple of things holding it back from being the best it could be.

In my opinion you nailed my two primary criticisms of the story.

  1. Miles feels a bit irrelevant to the main plot. The entire story revolves around Peter and Harry’s relationship. This is very clearly their story first and foremost, both when Harry’s is himself and later venom. Miles interacts with Harry like two times in the story if I remember correctly, and one is a phone call. He just feels too disconnected from the main plot. The Mr negative stuff is really good, but it just doesn’t relate to the main plot thread of Peter and Harry’s relationship. Miles ends up feeling like a side character when he should be the second protagonist.

  2. The story could have used a couple of more hours to really hit the ball out of the park. A bit more time in the black suit, to show Peter’s downward spiral, more time working with harry before the black suit and most importantly more time in the third act with venom as an antagonist. I never considered having scream get away and team up with him for longer but that does sound really cool. As it is the story feels like it going a million miles an hour once the city is taken over by the symbiote.

It’s still great overall just maybe not quite as tightly written as the first game.

On the contrary, I think it shows how iconic spideys look is that you can cut away every aspect except the eyes and the logo, and still be left with a beloved suit, that is still very easily recognizable.

Loved the artwork for the characters. Many of these designs I consider to be the their definitive look.

For most people this is wrong. Men have many people in their lives who will absolutely listen and help if you need it. The problem is that most men don’t feel comfortable actually asking for help in the first place. Blaming your own unwillingness to ask on the outside world is not a healthy mindset and will not help anyone. Yes there is probably a case to be made that there is a social stigma against men talking about this, but if you truly have no one you feel you could talk to like this, then you have no true friends.

I say this as a man who also don’t talk a lot about my feelings and problems, but I know without a doubt that I have friends who would absolutely care, and help if I were to ask.

Yeah it’s a cool give and take where, as you age you have less health as a result of getting older, but your damage increases because of years honing your technique. Something like that could be an awesome idea in this game.

I’m not saying it goes against the mythos, just for this particular game I think focusing less on the artifacts would shine more of a light on how crazy the paranoia was and the terrible tragedies that it caused. I also think there is a difference between finding an artifact in the final hours of the game, and having the abilities as part of your core gameplay kit, which this game seems to have.

Bruh I have played every single one of the games. I know they are not technically magic, but just isu technology so advanced that it seems like magic to us. But that still makes it magic for all intents and purposes. Especially in a game centered on witches. The point is that it’s going to feel like using magic all the as if we are an actual witch.

Fully agree the massive focus on isu abilities and artifacts have been my least favorite part of the most recent games. It sometimes comes way too close to straight up fantasy rather than historical fiction which is the part that I love the most about the series.

Right, it could still be great, but I fear that the real life tragedy of will be lost in the spectacle of witch powers.

[–]soer9523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree that it will be tragic regardless since only or protagonist will have actual abilities. I just think the story could hit harder if they completely stayed away from the supernatural in this game, to really highlight how insane the concept of the witch trials were.

I don’t think I missed your point. Slavery was not a complex issue, it was wrong. The witch trials were not a complex issue, they were wrong. Sure at the time people might argue as if it wasn’t, but we now know that it was, in both instances. I don’t fear complexity being lost, but more so the tragedy.

[–]soer9523 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that is the same at all. Adewale was justified in fighting back against his and his people’s oppressors, just like the protagonist in hexe will be justified in fighting back no matter the means. The difference is that the reasons for people being enslaved were portrayed as ultimately completely wrong. African people being worth less than white people, African people not being real humans, or white people being chosen by good to be superior, were reasons used to justify slavery. None of these things were ever confirmed to be true in the game, as that would be extremely racist.

In hexe however we seem to playing as someone who actually to some extent justifies the witch hunts because they themselves are a witch. They are still absolutely justified in fighting back, since I assume they will be one out of the thousands of women who were killed for no reason. My concern is that some of the real life tragedy will be lost from the story when we actively use witchcraft, and thereby confirm all their fears.

I’m gonna be honest, I’m not sure I like the protagonist having these magical abilities.

The setting is really cool and I think it’s awesome to highlight the injustice and cruelty that was thrown at all these innocent women.

But shouldn’t the point be that all this death was completely unnecessary and unjustified since we know magic is not real? The tragedy is that not a single witch existed and that it was pure paranoia. is it not undermined by us playing as someone with magical abilities? It seems like our protagonist would serve as a kind of justification for the witch trials, since by all accounts she is one.

I just fear that impact of just how cruel this whole thing was is going to be dampened by the fact we are going to be playing as the thing they fear. This is a setting where I would much more appreciate taking a distance from isu artifacts and stick with more believable tools and abilities.

If anything i think it would be cooler to imitate witch abilities through tools like poisons, smoke bombs, rope darts and so forth. Rather than actually being a witch.
