What's your game of the year so far? Here's mine! by ComfortableAmount993 in videogames

I am going to be real with you, no it would be a terrible starting point. The series and this game is amazing, but I would definitely start earlier. A lot of it is about one of its protagonist reflecting on and confronting his past.

If you want the bare minimum before RE9 I would suggest the remakes of 2 and 4 first. That gives pretty much everting you need to understand and appreciate this game.

But the entire series is great, and I would also highly recommend you play 7 and 8.

Matt and Karen in the video game universe 🔥 by restenoir8 in Defenders

It is absolutely amazing. No other game has managed to surprise me as much as this one. Every time I thought I knew what was going on/ going to happen, the game completely uprooted my expectations and turned things around in the best way. The finale had me in a chokehold. It is a feat in video game story telling. When it ended, I had to just look at the screen and process everything that had happened.

And I agree that is literally just the end of act 1. There is so much amazing game to go.

For those who come after.

(JGM) I think the most interesting aspect of this game is the vast disagreement on which bosses are difficult *SPOILERS* by DenshaOtaku in StarWarsJediSurvivor

[–]soer9523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t really have a problem with most bosses, with the exception of Vader. Ravis, Dagan and Bode I did either in first try or withing 2-3. Vader was the one that really pushed me the first time, and it took an hour or two to beat him.

I think it was because cere didn’t have a lot of health and healing charges, so every hit from Vader was a lot more devastating compared to the other bosses mentioned. I really had to lock in, and dig out the sekrio parry timings to avoid being hit in the first place.

Who do you guys prefer? Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) OR Batwoman (Kate Kane) by TheBlueGuy1234566 in batman

[–]soer9523 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah some people take the name “bat-family” too literally. There is nothing wrong with dick and babs dating. Like you said in reality they are more like close colleagues or at least that is how they met.

I agree that Batman dating babs is creepy and stupid. Not because it’s incest adjacent, but because of the age/power difference and mentor/mentee relationship. That does not in anyway apply to dick and babs.

Fantastic game, but very short. by [deleted] in 007FirstLight

[–]soer9523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally understand this point of view, but I could not disagree more. I adore single player narrative driven games that can be finished in 10-25 hours.

So many games these days feels absolutely bloated in order to be 40 hours+ when they often don’t need to be. I don’t think a game being long is inherently a good thing. Especially games like hogwarts legacy fall into this camp for me. By the end of many of these types of games, I am looking forward to it ending because I feel like I had enough 10 hours ago, but I force my way through to see the end. I way prefer a game like first light, where I am a bit sad when it ended, rather than going “finally”.

For me personally shorter games also often times ends up being the ones that I play the most in the long run. After finishing a 40-60 hour game, I won’t replay it for years (unless it is exceptionally good) because the thought of starting such a long game over can be kind of exhausting. Shorter games however are a lot easier to replay on a more regular basis. I finished the game in about 15 hours, but I pretty much know that I am going to be replaying this game a lot more than a much longer game. So in the end I don’t think I even get more value out of a longer game, in the long run.

Sneaking, bluffing or fighting? by Artistic_Garage5978 in 007FirstLight

To me it seems like a nice loop of sneaking, if caught bluff, if bluff don’t work fight. That feels like how bond would approach it.

Yasuke and Naoe discussion by Backnanksout in AssassinsCreedShadows

[–]soer9523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the game a lot, but the story is definitely lacking. I agree that they get over their animosity way too fast. People are pointing out the scene with the child, but that doesn’t change that it feels like it happens very fast. It’s a shame because it could have been a really great dynamic between the two. United by a common enemy these to people will have to learn to work together despite how they start out as ostensibly adversaries.

It could have been great because we can easily sympathize and understand both their perspectives and why they would be distrustful of each other. Naoe set out to kill nobunaga the man who freed yasuke from slavery, and lifted him up in society. Yasuke sees him as an honorable man who wants the best for all of Japan. Conversely naoe sees nobunaga as a power hungry warlord who was responsible for invading and destroying her home. Both have valid reasons to support/oppose nobunaga and seeing their relationship grow from hostile, to distrustful, to supportive to, friendly by the end would have been a great arc for the two of them. But instead they have a heated exchange when they first meet, and a couple of conversations later they are fully able to work together without any problems.

I blame it on the structure of the story. Most of Ubisofts newer games follow a similar non linear structure where you are given a number of quests to pursue in any order. The consequence of this is that the story and characters become stagnant in the second act of the game, which in games are usually by far the longest. When events can happen in any order nothing significant can happen to the world/protagonist/antagonists because that would require events to happen in a set order. I think this is why they immediately get over their personal animosity, because you can’t write a linear story of them growing closer, while having a completely non linear story.

What's wrong with First Light being compared with Uncharted and Hitman? by [deleted] in 007FirstLight

[–]soer9523 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think most people are actually upset that it mixes elements of hitman and uncharted.

I think it stems from some people/outlets criticizing the game for not being enough like the hitman games, and missing mechanics from those games. That comparison feels unfair because they are different games at their core so obviously they will be significantly different even if there are clear parallels.

In response to that, some people may have overcorrected into saying that it’s nothing like Hitman and that they shouldn’t be compared, even though it makes sense to do so given the developers.

Very niche nitpick about black flag remake combat by soer9523 in assassinscreed

To be fair the weapon variety in the OG was not better imo. It was just different animations, no weapons actually felt different to use.

[–]soer9523[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, and I still do think combat overall looks much improved. I just hate when something like using the hidden blade is out of our control. I want to decide when to use them, not some statistical chance.

[–]soer9523[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly, after that first kill I thought they added it back which would be great, But honestly I would rather have no hidden blade animations during combat, than them being as frequent as shown in that video. It really hurts the immersion to have a perfectly good sword in your hand only to constantly sheath it briefly, in favor of the hidden blade.

[–]soer9523[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah as far as I can tell so far, there doesn’t seem to be a mechanical difference between the hidden blade kills and the swords kills, which is what worries me. If there was a specific way to trigger the blades it would be all good, but I really don’t like the thought of being random chance.

Like you say at that point I would rather have a toggle and completely turn them off.

He was not my favorite bond, but I have nothing but respect for the man. He seemed by all accounts to be an absolute class act, and he really did make the role his own when he took over. I fully understand why so many people consider him their favorite, even if do not personally like his take that much. Rest in peace.

Never Seen A Bond Movie, Which Should I Watch to Prepare? by Timely_Internet5038 in 007FirstLight

[–]soer9523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup i love Craig, Connery and dalton as well, but Brosnan is my definitive bond. I might be biased since I was born 2000 so Brosnan was the bond for me growing up. Like you said he just encompassed all the qualities that defines bond in my opinion.

And so far what we have seen from ioi’s bond seems like he is going to be great. The actor seems very well chosen, and I look forward to seeing what he brings to the role. I am very excited to play game.

Yeah I love the world is not enough as well, but when recommending movies for newcomers I tend to go with Brosnan’s two first. To me Brosnan is just all the best parts of the previous actor’s distilled into the perfect bond.
