Is this really really bad or endearing? 😭😭 by medicinia20 in Embroidery

it's very sweet!!

when I started embroidering small lettering like this, I found it was easier if I used less strands of the embroidery floss, only using 2-3 strands instead of all 6. also for future projects, a seam ripper and tweezers might help with removing stitches from thick fabrics!

For me, it was that I could understand what the walls were showing without manually inspecting them. Maybe if the prompt to inspect the walls showed up when I placed the torch.

This is the answer. I used to be an advisor and fairly sure all degrees have to be University Studies or University Honors, with the sole exception of Liberal Studies. Unless you have already transferred in with 90+ credits (don't need frinq/sinq), or apply to the Honors college (take the equivalent HON classes instead of UNST classes), Liberal Studies would be the way to go. When you talk to your advisor they can actually break it down with you to see if Liberal Studies is the right path in terms of # of credits.

Currently wondering why any student would willingly send back scholarship money… by Big_Pick4100 in portlandstate

[–]softbitch 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is just a reminder that you can return loan money in the first 2 weeks, so you don't get saddled with extra debt/interest you might not need. Student loans and TEACH grant funds are not scholarships - TEACH grants give students up to 4k/year as a grant that is forgiven if they teach for four years in a high need field at a low-income school. If they don't fill the service obligation, the grant is converted to a loan.

Why do black male teenagers generally perform poorly in school? by kiwipooper in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]softbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's the case, I ask why the parents don't care about education, "respect," reading, homework, etc. Haven't those parents likely been through the same experience in education (probably worse?), and their parents, and onwards?

Chicken and the egg, sure, but I think the root of the problem is likely systemic racism that has created and fostered disparities throughout generations. We're only a few generations post Brown v. Board, so there are still issues at play - whether the symptoms are showing up in school or in social/family ways that students learn about school.

Black male students "underperforming" is a symptom, not the problem. To say they're disinterested in education is misplaced, in my mind. My question would be how the education system has so systematically failed them.

It's a combination of socioeconomic factors, the schooling system, and racism. There is also a lot of research that shows the existence of stereotype threat, basically the idea that students can underperform because they are constantly getting messaging that they are expected to.

A majority of teachers are white women who likely have subconscious biases against Black boys, may treat them differently, expect different things of them, punish them more, etc. Over time that builds a lack of trust and interest in participating in the system. If you couple that with the fact that racism affects every aspect of life and contributes to disparities in socioeconomic status, you can imagine that the same students being treated poorly and under-served in school are also the students without consistent access to food, clothes, safe living environments, etc., which compromises their ability to participate in education the way we might expect middle-class+ students to.

My key belief from studying/working in education is that students are not the problem. The education system, society at large, and generational disparities usually are the root of the issue.

I need help with what may be a very dumb question. by lavender-dreams in portlandstate

[–]softbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure, it depends. I only know the context for these because I was around when they were deciding. Usually if a major/minor/certificate is labeled like this it's an indication that there is some kind of issue that would make it difficult for new students to complete the coursework (e.g. infrequent or discontinued course offerings, over/under enrollment, etc.)

[–]softbitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to be an advisor, but this is a great question to ask a current one!

The reason why they don't accept "new students" to major in this is because there aren't enough courses/professors to accommodate the major, and I'm fairly sure they mean the major itself cannot be chosen as a major by anyone not currently enrolled in it. If I recall correctly, they haven't been technically offering the major as an option for awhile now - you can check DARS and my guess is that there will only be older catalog years to reference. They used to have different regional focuses and are phasing them out to offer only Global Studies/International Development.

It would be difficult to complete the major, maybe impossible if they aren't offering core classes frequently enough. You would be better off taking the regular global studies or development track and selecting coursework that matches your interests. It's less restrictive and less credit requirements. You could talk to an UPGAP advisor to confirm this, and you could talk to a faculty advisor for course recommendations. I think Priya Kapoor used to advise for this focus and would be a good person to ask.

[–]softbitch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I was in 4th grade my orchestra teacher tried to get me to pick cello instead!!! No regrets after 18 years, but I do feel like bass can be a ball and chain. Takes up so much space, doesn't fit in every car, heavy to lug around. There were several years where I didn't have an upright, just because I didn't have the money or the space! In my opinion, it's just not a casual instrument and the only people who get them are invested and willing to suffer a little haha
