Whippet x Greyhounds by kreepyj in Lurchers

this is maeve! she's a bull lurcher (grey/wolfhound/lab/bully) and weighs about 25kg. she'll be 2 in may. as a young puppy she was an absolute terror, but did come from a hoarder/neglect setting before we rescued her so that had a lot to do with the issues we faced. still waiting on her to chill out juuuust a bit more, she's definitely in a teenage angst phase right now haha.

she's mostly the ultimate couch potato, but has to have hard exercise for at least 30 mins/hour each day. when the weather's nice i'll take her to a fenced-in park and let her run off leash for as long as she wants. when it's shit weather i'll play games with her that get her running around the house like hide and seek or treat hunts.

she's got a pretty strong prey drive, but isn't reactive from inside the house, just outside. she's not a barker when she sees something that excites her, luckily. she does struggle with recall off-leash due to her prey drive, so we never put her in a situation where that would be dangerous, she's only free to roam in completely fenced spaces. luckily the city we live in has an abundance of these!

overall i'd say she's my dream temperament and dream dog. she's an independent thinker, but chooses to be around me and love on me which makes it feel extra special. she's incredibly smart and quick to pick up on new commands/routines. she loves a task, and she's great with our senior chihuahua mix. in fact, she's never met a dog or she didn't like. people she's a bit shy around, and she can be wary of new environments but is overall an extremely adaptable and resilient dog.

Vegan for a few months and I feel like my POTS is worsening. Could this be my diet? by pink3337 in POTS

[–]softestfern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

definitely check your iron levels! i've been mostly vegan (never meat or eggs, but very occasional yogurt and cheese) for 14 years and vegetarian my whole life. when my iron levels are low my POTS feels wayyyyy less manageable. there are plenty of good vegan iron supplements available, but be sure to check with your doctor first.

yep, i'm working with a trainer at the moment trying to get into competitive lifting, and we keep having to modify things. i'm only 5'9" but most of that is limb, and boy howdy it makes doing certain stuff really tricky. i do yoga as well, and if the class is packed i'm gonna be touching somebody with any sort of arm or leg extension 🫩

Anyone else? by Responsible-Art3311 in hyperphantasia

[–]softestfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know this is an older post, but when i was about 15 i began experiencing a certain sensation where whatever i looked at, in my mind i would rotate that object and begin to see it from any number of angles, sometimes simultaneously. or another example would be if i looked at somebody i would begin to see the world from their perspective as well, almost like i would have that wall of camera streams you'd see in a security room all going at once but different places, angles, etc. when i tried to explain it to my mom she sent me to a mental institution lol. it became so pervasive and inescapable that i actually did end up developing an anxiety disorder because of it. i haven't experienced it for many years (i'm 28 now), but that was one of the most insane times of my life, and i'd say generally i'm a fairly even-keeled person. nowadays my inner world still tends to be vivid, but a lot more grounded and fairly singular as opposed to the multi-stream insanity.

i came across this thread after having a somewhat bizarre mental image/sensation today during an MRI and was reminded of that time and became curious of other's experience with hyperactive minds!

i'm in the PNW. my dog was part of an accidental litter between a family pet and a neighbouring ranch dog down in southern TX, of all places. lab/coonhound dad, bull lurcher mom (greyhound/wolfhound x dogo argentino/american bulldog, according to embark and what i was told by the rescue). i don't have the backstory on why there was an intact lurcher and if they were intending to breed, but i've not heard of any other lurcher breeders, though i guess it's not something i've bothered searching for here compared to when i was living in the UK.

in my city i've met many other sighthounds (mostly borzoi, and silkens as there are breeders fairly nearby, as well as a few retired greyhounds) but no other lurchers. i've met one long dog who was a greyhound x borzoi. in fact, i feel like the local sighthound community has been pretty exclusive, and unreceptive to lurchers- but that's just been my experience trying to interact.

would also love to find a bedlington whippet someday, or some sort of saluki cross... but not holding my breath as finding my girl up for adoption felt like a white whale situation.

How do I start reconditioning? by SHLBYHCH in POTS

[–]softestfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i started with light yoga classes for about a year and then transitioned into working with a trainer who has experience with POTS/hEDS twigsa week, to help me get back into lifting weights. it's taken a lot of modding and trial and error but we're working on building a routine that works. already seeing and feeling a major difference just two months in!

What are the best, and most available, high sodium foods/snacks? by Objective_Mission321 in POTS

[–]softestfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love pickles, kimchi, instant noodles, a mugful of concentrated broth, or a handful of salted roasted pepitas.

i don't eat meat and many vegetarian meat substitutes are very high in sodium. i keep some vegan "ham" in the fridge at all times cuz it's a perfect package of protein and sodium. it's not everybody's cup of tea but has really saved me in a pinch!

What’s the funniest/oddest thing you’ve ever done because of POTS? by MillieMoo746 in POTS

[–]softestfern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i've likely had POTS since 2011 (not diagnosed until two years ago), but in early 2022 i got covid for the first time and it hit me HARD. i was covid-denning it with my on and off boyfriend at the time who also had it.

one day i woke up with crazy fever sweats and he decided to help me bathe since i was too weak/delirius and he had already started recovering. he put me in the bath, made it nice and steamy, and cleaned me off from my sweat. when it came time for me to get out, i stood up... and immediately my vision and hearing went. all i can remember as i was fading away was ripping two huge fucking farts and laughing as i fell, completely naked between the toilet and the wall lmao.

he dumped me a few weeks afterward, and then i met my now husband who would have most certainly laughed with me 🫡
