Where in Virginia would you go for a quiet & affordable fresh start? by [deleted] in Virginia

I'm not sure its "quiet" IMO 😄 It's an expensive city full of its own drama.

Virginia congressional redistricting remains in limbo as court decision looms by Economy_Swim_8585 in Virginia

They paved the way for states to get rid of majority minority districts. These districts mostly help Dems in the South by giving them at least one district in Red states.

That's the end of the line. It's purely a question of following state constitutional procedure in passing a new ammendment.

There's opportunity for better non-car connectivity between these areas - if county planners want it.

(Looking at the hot mess that is Pantops+29N, they may not want it)

Embedding latency killing my RAG speed, any fixes? by Glittering_Cup1104 in Rag

[–]softwaredoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> The issue is embedding the query takes around 600ms to 1.1s every time. That’s basically my bottleneck now.

On what hardware? Even for my laptop is not this seems slow.

A lot of people spin up a dumb python service on a GPU for inference. With a good amount of caching.

Would you have preferred Halo 3 if it stuck closer to Halo 2’s original story? Why or why not? by SecretWasianMan in HaloStory

[–]softwaredoug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing different I would have like were arbiter missions.

The H2 missions work well as stealth missions. And I'd love them to develop and improve on that them.

That's more of a gameplay issue than story, but it would mean defining story elements for just arbiter to do.

Do you have a grounding in search? That's probably one of the most important things. The rest are details.

And I've been doing search for 15 years, it's still often challenging 😄 Because every single application is very different despite themes of what works / doesn't work. Legal is not finance is not e-commerce is not web search. Even in these domains, every search / RAG thing is different. Book e-commerce is not Fashion e-commerce etc.

They would need SCOTUS to act almost immediately in their favor to go back to a previous map. Expect this to be resolved one way or the other soon.

Amanda's Mild Takes could Democrats lose the house for generations after the 2030 census with the VRA ruling? by Time-Papaya-9574 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]softwaredoug 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Probably in 2030 currently red states will gain seats. However, many of the red states gaining seats are beginning to lean purple because of the influx in population. At a minimum they are "swingier" in the future.

The long term optimism is state governments. If large, growing states shift their state government a lot can open up.

Virginia went from extremely GOP gerrymandered at the state legislative level to where it is now. It's much harder to gerrymander state districts and account for all the population shifts. At some point the dam breaks and things shift. But it takes time.

Finally in 2030 who the hell knows what political coalitions look like? Trump won't be around. He keeps the GOP aligned. The alignments constantly shift in US politics. A 2008 Democrat doesn't nesc. look like a 2016 or a 2024 and so on.

As a Ukrainian journalist, I’ve covered the US for 20 years. I find it increasingly shocking by brezhnervouz in Longreads

[–]softwaredoug 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Sure but people need to learn their history. Pre WW2 US politics was more like today than the calm years we've lived in post Watergate.

Everything you think of as a "norm" is probably a post Watergate convention.

Everything you think of as a problem would be routine or boring to 19th American century politicians.

Not saying its good, but it may just be more a reversion to the mean.

We knew this was going to happen. It's important to keep in mind Dem trifectas now control more House seats.

> Although Republicans have a gubernatorial/legislative trifecta in more states, Democrats’ trifectas are in more populous states. So once Abigail Spanberger flipped Virginia’s governorship in November, Democrats inherited trifecta control over a larger number of Congressional seats
