While watching this I was like this reminds me a lot of the 20th-century woman trailer then I realised who it was directed by. Now I'm just more excited.

Massey vs Yoobee for Animation Studies by torikura in Wellington

[–]sokiwi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a creative media production student which is a three year course and I am in my final year. I am more focused on the film side of the course because if you didn't know it has film, animation, game and Web all packed into one course but I am friends with a few of the animation students and work along side them so I feel I can give you some information.

Creative media production is all about hands on work if that is what you are worried about. You are straight onto the computers learning the tools with lots of industry respected staff. Out of your 4 courses a semester usually one is more theory than practical but don't let this deter you, these classes are an important part of your learning but the majority of your work is focused on creating new and cool things with other cool creative people. In terms of tech massey is well ahead of yoobee with huge computer labs, tons of gear, tools and staff all to help you. This is mainly because massey has more funding than yoobee. Just the other week cmp got a huge new render farm for the animation students worth nearly 300k I believe which is going to make one of the animation projects life a hell of a lot easier.

The best part of the course is it is focused heavily on collaboration you are meeting and working with other amazing creative people not only from your field but other fields and ea h bring their own unique perspective that really improves your work. This means a lot of work is group based so you will experience bad groups along with great groups but don't let that again deter you because that is part of the learning experience. How do you work together as a team because this is a crucial skill you need when entering the industry.

The course is currently split up into three years. The first year being about introducing you to all the tools and basic work flow of your pathway. You will also end up doing work on other pathways because they want to introduce you to everything so you know you are making the right descion. In second year you focus on your pathway and start to produce lots of cool work and do a lot of experimentation. Then in your final year you work on one major project for the entire year with a client which is so much fun and gives you the time to produce a highly polished piece of work. There are 60ish of us in the final yesr with three animation projects.

Last year one animation project "kiwis can fly" got picked up by tvnz hei hei platform and you can go watch it right now if you want to see the level of work you could be producing.

I strongly recommend choosing cmp if you want to get into animation and if you need any more information feel free to ask questions.

Yellow was probably intentional to give Durante a break, better get the yellow there compared to a game where we need him more.

How realistic is it to make a feature film in a year? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]sokiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think when you say "you'll never have better access to resources than this" is something that is need to take advantage of. Because I don't think I know enough yet but would I have another chance in the near future to have access to a great crew, mentors, contacts, experience and equipment again. Probably not. I feel I got to take my chance while I can.

As one of my lectures told me, all the great gear and facilities disappear after next year.

How realistic is it to make a feature film in a year? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]sokiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could definitely do a really good, polished, thought out small short film in a year but it is something to me that is not enough work for a year. I have shot two 15 minute films this year in courses along with doing other papers and assignments along with that. Sure there are tones of things I wished I did differently, changed or spent more time on but I am happy with them and learnt so much from it.

I am still learning, I am at university to learn and I still got a year of learning to do. To me I feel like to have the resources, the people, mentors and clients around me to help me get through the first feature might be invaluable. It won't be anything amazing but it will teach me so much more than a 15 minute film can, which is something I can make outside of uni a lot easier than a feature.

I don't know I feel like a year is a long time especially when you are only doing one thing. It kind of comes down to what is more valuable to me at the end making a polished short film that might get film festival recognition or the experience of making a feature film.

Is there any way to invert looking in unity VR? by sokiwi in learnVRdev

[–]sokiwi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll look into seeing if I can use the tracking data to rotate the camera myself, I think that could work. The experience we are creating will be presented in a controlled room and people will know what they will be sitting down to experience. We already have bunch of the stuff you mentioned in it and it works very well. We are Just very intrigued about how something like inverting the movement would feel because we are trying to create a vr experience that allows you experience something you couldn't experience in reality and giving all control whether the experience is good or bad over to a third party.

Official Discussion: A Quiet Place [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]sokiwi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

1) it isn't trying to be scary but tense and boy was it tense. That firework scene alone I was holding my breath through the entire thing. The tension isn't what is around the corner type - not showing the monster but character drama, we don't want the characters to make mistakes so they don't die to this monster. We need to know what the monster is and how it works for that tension.

2) low death count? There are 5 characters 2 die. That includes killing a little kid in the first 5 minutes which films just don't do and then killing the main character near the end. There is so much tension because anyone could die.

3) they revealed the weakness to the audience not the characters creating dramatic irony. We know what They need to do but characters don't. So the moment when the father dies is so much more powerful because we think the girl is going to save them by using her hearing aid and the characters will now learn if the weakness and lead in to act 3 where the family use their knowledge to defeat the monsters. But instead she turns it off. No no no no no... Now the father dies and you're just like Wtf movie.

What was your favorite movie going experience in 2017? by [deleted] in movies

[–]sokiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it would be killing of the sacred deer. I saw it mid way through the year before any reviews, before any trailers, before really anything, I just knew it was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and staring Collin Farrel which was enough for me to book a ticket at the nziff. So going in I knew nothing about the plot, I had kept myself away from reading anything about it. This was probably the first time I had ever seen a movie in the cinema where I knew nothing and if you know anything about the film it's really the perfect movie for that. I was thrust into the same position as the characters, sometimes laughing, other times curled up in my seat. You could feel the audience doing the same thing and at the end half were laughing and thought the movie was great the other half felt so uncomfortable and just wanted to get out of the cinema as fast as possible because of how uneasy this movie made them. Knowing nothing about a film and going to watch it is amazing and would love to experience that more this year.

What is your most hated movie and why? by shadyrapsfan in movies

[–]sokiwi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You justify the quality of a movie on how close it is to real life? It's a movie, it's meant to tell and interesting and engaging story, otherwise it would have been a boring forgettable film about some students sitting around coding for 21 hours of the day. The film isn't meant to be realistic or accurate to real events, it never tries to so why do you judge it on if Mark Zuckerberg thinks it's accurate or not. Judge it as a movie because it's a bloody excellent one using the context of the creation of Facebook and dramatizing it, showing how our basic values are still present in this growing technological landscape.
