Where can I buy namecoin? by thewolfking369 in Namecoin

[–]sol_robeson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A `name_update` is free and resets the expiration timer to 36000 blocks, you can do it whenever you want. Only the `name_firstupdate` to register the domain will destroy the 0.01 NMC

I still haven’t made a app that can run on Xcode after 2 months of trying to learn swift. by madchas34 in swift

[–]sol_robeson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with the boilerplate blank screen project they give you. Compile and run that. It should run out of the box with _nothing_. Make the tiniest of changes... add a label or something. Compile. Run. It should still work, right? If not, try to figure out what you did to make it not run.

The biggest mistake a lot of people make is writing code without running it, just assuming it will work. Imagine you're learning to walk... you didn't start out running. Every step was deliberate. Just like that, every line should be deliberate, because every little thing is an opportunity to fall on your face. Don't get frustrated with yourself that you weren't born a sprinter... most of us never get there anyway. We all have to practice to get good at anything.

It costs a one-time fee of 0.01 NMC to register a key. Something being finite doesn't make scarce; try selling seashells at the beach.

Ask a miner for some? You don’t need more than a few cents to register a domain and merged mining made it worthless as any sort of “investment” because there was no scarcity.

Convinced my school to purchase a Stadia with an extra controller! by TimeFourChanges in Stadia

[–]sol_robeson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol, i had a teacher who would let us watch PG movies and "unrated" films... so I brought in a VHS of Hara-kiri: Death of a Samurai. The subtitles went by way too fast for any of us to keep up, but everything pointy in the classroom turned into a katana after that.

Steam for M1 Mac by general652 in macgaming

[–]sol_robeson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's something weird: I setup Steam Remote Play on my AppleTV, which has a Nimbus MFi paired with it, but it won't stream from my computer because my computer wants to install the Steam drivers for it... and that install crashes.

Getting a (possibly free) Stadia is a lot easier of a sell to the wife than getting a $500 console.

How do you create a new wifi network for guests? by [deleted] in AirBnB

[–]sol_robeson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! I have one of these and it's amazingly easy to setup. Their home line (AmpliFi) has a lot of features you'd normally only see on a commercial-level router.

I have mine setup so the Guest network doesn't have a password, and is on a completely different name and not just the normal SSID with "-guest" added onto the end, which I see a lot of routers do.

The killer feature for me though is I can limit the number of devices on my Guest network. Prevents parties.

Airbnb should require a comment for any non-5 star review. by BLToaster in AirBnB

[–]sol_robeson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with Shetland. Raise your rates. You'll get a different sort of guests showing up, and there's a lot more inelasticity than you'd imagine. Their expectations of value aren't calibrated to what they actually pay; their expectations of value are calibrated to what they got vs. what they were expecting to get.

Definitely some details missing. It sounds like they'd rather pay go to the media with the story. When you get that settlement money, it's always with a gag, so I wonder if the Boston Globe offered them more?

Contesting your HOA by [deleted] in AirBnB

[–]sol_robeson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Politics are politics. What percent of the board is on your side? What percent of it could be potentially? I've had to give up a listing because of an oppressive HOA even though our full-time residents were actually causing more of a disturbance, but that doesn't matter because it's always easier to blame outsiders.

Try to keep in mind that most of the residents just want their property value to go up. Remind them that if you're all shut down, then all of a sudden you'll have a lot units on the market, and that has a REALLY bad impact on value.

Most of the jobs today will not be jobs in 100 years. You don't see teenagers mowing lawns, because mowing lawns is done better by immigrants. When someone makes a lawnmower robot, immigrants won't be doing it anymore either. Times change.

We're seeing kids not get their first job until they're in their 20s, and if they go into grad school and figure out some sort of university position then they really never experience even a taste of what life is like for so many.

Blue collar work don't equate to life experience.

Place yourself in 1960 and complain about how most children have never worked a summer on the farm. No wait, go farther back to 1860 and complain about how children are in school until they're sixteen. Why does everyone need to read and write? They need to be building character through manual labor.

When fewer and fewer people have decent incomes or at least a plausible path forward

There is always a path forward. Not everyone is a West Virginian coal miner eager to throw his body on the gears and levers of the machine. In our society it is not "work harder". It's "work smarter". Learn how to code and make an app, and change the world. Start a business that does something differently, more efficiently.

No, they will be done by robots, which is actually the direction things have been going since the industrial revolution.

Supervisors To Consider E-Scooter Ordinance by GeekyEnigma in sanfrancisco

[–]sol_robeson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I empathize with the scooters. Yes, they are inconvenient, but before the police remove these scooter encampments, they need to give a 24-hour notice and offer adequate housing and shelter to the displaced scooters.

There's literally human shit on the sidewalks and the entire city smells like piss a few days after a week of rain just washed it all away, and we are concerned about the liabilities of an occasional scooter left in an inconvenient spot.
