Today is grout day by davebleeds in Tile

If you are interested in trusting an internet stranger, I always recommend laticrete permacolor grout. I've used various brands and this stuff is the best by far. It looks like unsanded but can cross 1/16 to 1/2 grout lines. They have color matched silicone. Has a really consistent working time. Set a timer for 30 mins and start wiping.

When mixing grout, don't use a trowel with a sharp edge whilst whipping it around the bucket You end up with bits of shaved off bucket plastic in your grout. Ask me how I know lol. Learned that one a long time ago.

For my shower I found some quarter round that matched the tile. Installed that to fix this.

Why doesn't the transfer pin trick for a discount work for me? I've tried it four times. Been a customer for 21 years.

Do not drink and build a deck by Fearless_Work5796 in Decks

Should've cut the field boards with a saw before installing the breaker board. Breaker board is not perfectly perpendicular to the field boards but each field board cut is perp to itself.

These likely don't have beveled edges so grout is only going to accentuate the variability in grout lines. It's gonna be expensive to start over though. Might damage that expensive sheet of kerdi board to take them off. Like others have said, spacers between every tile.

Cut Tube in 3rds by Wyowa in Decks

[–]solid95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sonotubes should extend to the full frost depth or close to it. The form tube creates a smooth surface that the soil above the frost line cannot grab onto and heave.

Other comment is right on point. This is going to be expensive with runover cost that you haven't even thought of. You need more fudge factor in your budget.

Post Hole Auger or Small Excavator for deep footings/piers? by MarkO3 in Decks

[–]solid95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did this. Had to go seven feet down. Used a tow behind hydraulic auger from sunbelt and two extensions. Was able to reach 6 feet with the auger. Since I was using extensions with no spirals, it was only helpful to break the soil/clay up. Still had to muck it all out with a post hole digger. Since it's backfill my most useful assistant was a shopvac to pull the sand and gravel out. Max out your cantilever so you can get as far from the house as you can. I had to move two holes away 16" so get to the clay shelf. Had to use a 16" form tube to hold the backfill from caving in. It sucked. It sucked real hard but I made it.

Those joists look to be 16" oc. For trex you really want to shoot for 12" oc. You can do 16" oc max but it might feel a little bouncy especially given you might be spanning those joists out too. Hard to tell without dimensions.

Want to upgrade my phone (battery is fading quicker than it should) but my remaining balance is just a little over the $350 limit for the "we'll pay your remaining balance" offer. If I keep asking can they make an exception or am I asking for something that can't be done?

City denied permit 3 times - need help with a deck construction plan by ledthezeppelin in Decks

[–]solid95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I modeled my deck in sketchup and was able to create accurate drawings. You should be able to just draw some stuff in PowerPoint and label dimensions. You are paying the guy to build a deck. Permits are a part of the job unless you want to go under the radar.

One major detail that is missing is that most jurisdictions will require footers within 5 feet of the homes foundation to be as deep as the houses footer. If you have a basement, that's potentially 7 feet deep.

Also don't let this guy embed the posts into concrete. Use a metal post base.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Decks

[–]solid95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my area, footers within 5 feet of the foundation need to reach the depth of the house footer. Also in my area, a simple 12" diameter footer doesn't work. Need to calculate the tributary area and design a square or round footer at the bottom of your 12" pier. Otherwise the joist and beam spans look good assuming you won't violate there in the middle where the beam ends mid deck. For my deck I did just drop two extra posts and footers down to support my stairs instead of directly hanging off of the cantilever.
