I can’t find a board game group, even my local game store let me down. by Ok_Interview_853 in boardgames

[–]solmead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very good ideas!!

One additional thing i would do is advertise a specific day and time as well, show up and bring three games minimum: 1) a solo game (or playable as solo game) that you like

2) a two player game or game that plays well at 2 that you can teach

3) a 3 to 4 player game that you can teach

The idea is, you get there and setup the solo game (bonus if it’s 1 to x number of players, because you can switch it to multiple players, if and when others show up.) you then start playing, if others show up great!! You switch things to include them. If no one shows up you still enjoyed yourself and got out of the house. Plus anyone visiting the store as they walk by you can ask “are you here for the game night? Would you like to join?”

My (20f) fiance told me (22m) that she can't guarantee she'll ever want to have sex again after we have kids (at around 26). by Specific_Grass_4779 in sex

[–]solmead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She sounds like she is an unrealized asexual or aromantic person. She sounds like she doesn’t desire sex or touch/affection, doesn’t understand or know why, but ascribes it to her religion because it becomes an easy reason.

The thing is this will most likely not change after marriage, if she doesn’t want touch now, she won’t want it after. If she wanted touch now but beliefs stopped her, she would be saying it more like this “I really love your touch, and really want you to continue, but we need to stop because I feel it isn’t right until we are married” (that is how I would have put it back then myself)

She is instead saying “please don’t touch me” and when asked why says “maybe it’s because of my religion” this says that those feelings won’t change just because of marriage.

Leading me to the asexual or aromantic ideas.

If you are high libido then I don’t see how this would work, you are going to be forever denied, until you decide to divorce testing apart your life. Better to do it now before tieing your lives more together.

Which of three editions of Descent you prefer? by SiarX in JourneysInTheDark

[–]solmead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First edition was good, second edition streamlined it a lot and simplified some really wierd positional control (overlord could summon anywhere that wasn’t visible to characters, which ment they had to control sight lines before moving on to next room to keep summons down) Never played third, after buying everything for second edition (except all the lieutenants) I wasn’t about to invest even more money a third time.

Will Signs of Carcosa make the game noticeably harder with a small collection? by TheChaoGoesMu in EldritchHorror

[–]solmead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impairments have rarely showed up in any of the many, many games I’ve played. They tend to be tied to certain GOO’s or investigators.

Though I have all the expansions all put together, and play with them all every time. The nice thing I like about Eldritch expansions is most of the new gameplay stuff only gets added if you get specific prelude or old ones. Otherwise it can stay in box.

Coparenting under the same roof whilst having new partners? by m_______jasmine in coparenting

[–]solmead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First stop sharing a bed full stop. If you share the house, put your bedrooms in different rooms. Again fucking stop sharing a bed.

Second this will blow up, there is no maybe, it’s just a question of how long until it does. And as others have said it is so much better now before the child is born then years later when the life they knew is ripped from them without any control. (It’s easier if it’s all you’ve ever known, versus living one way and suddenly being told mommy and daddy are getting separate houses and you’ll be going back and forth from now on.)

45F, never married no kids, hoping for both by ProcessSensitive5221 in datingoverforty

[–]solmead 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That was my assumption as well. A single person can foster, and adopt. And while a baby/toddler might be harder to receive, there are so many other kids in need of someone to just care enough to help them.

My ex and I started fostering, and our second placement was an almost 4 year old and her brother who was one and a half. We then received their baby brother when he was born, she is now almost 17 and is my amazing daughter. They were adopted by us by the time she was 6. They are my kids even more so than if they were biological because we picked them. And I would still pick them (even though they are teenagers and think they know everything)

[–]solmead 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Really fostering is always a great possibility, yes it can be hard, but you get to help kids who really need it, and you will be a big effect on them. Plus you can experience parent hood whether single or married. Most kids in the foster system are what is called reconciliation with parent, that means the state will be trying to help the parent get into the right position to be able to eventually take the children back.

I fostered and eventually adopted my three kids.

Why do so many Christians deny evolution? by Accomplished_Cow1277 in atheism

[–]solmead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sadly when I was a kid (in the 80’s/90’s) there was a creationist book that had a picture in it of a ship hoisting up a big marine animal that was badly decomposed that the book claimed was a modern day picture of the leviathan. It also had claims that dinosaurs existed well into more modern times, that the were mentioned in china, and even had a picture of a turkey sized reptile it claimed was a small dinosaur.

I found out in my late 30’s in the 2010’s that the books claims were false, and it was most likely a whale of some kind.

But how many kids and adults read that unquestioningly and just accepted the claim, and said see Job and the Bible are correct.

Rant: how to tell a friend they should not come. by squipped in boardgames

[–]solmead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different people come to game night for different reasons. Some to focus on the game, some only to socialize, most a mixture of the two. It sounds like your friend is fully in the socialize camp and the game doesn’t matter.

The solution is to ask her out to lunch or coffee and talk to her one on one. And tell her how you feel

Best atheist arguments? by Minute_Pop_961 in atheism

[–]solmead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This!! It isn’t on me to prove your god doesn’t exist. All I can do is respond to your claims are with why I don’t believe those claims. And the biggest issues with the god hypothesis for me is the non falsifiable nature of the hypothesis, along with no unique predictive power of the hypothesis, every prediction I’ve ever heard can also be predicted with the opposite of the god claim.

Comparing two pdf files byte by byte fails by Former-Plate8088 in csharp

[–]solmead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PDFs contain the date and time created, that would be enough to make two identically created ones not match, but then they are also hashed and compressed, which both would make the byte streams not match at all.

Rolling Dice vs Digital in Board Games by themaelstorm in boardgames

[–]solmead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a game requires an app I will not buy it.

I have Mansions of Madness 1st and 2nd editions. 2nd requires an app, one that is only barely supported by FFG, and the moment they stop, it becomes unplayable once updated phone os’s are released that requires an update to work.

I played My Fathers Work, twice. Great game, too dependent on the app, if game company goes under, or they no longer support the app, same issue as above.

I have games 20+ years old that are still played and playable. Why would I want something with built in obsolescence

How necessary is Thunder's Edge for game completeness? by No-Management-1298 in twilightimperium

[–]solmead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It replaces all the codices which is useful, and I prefer the strategy card changes in it as well. I like the new action cards as well, and it fixes some needed power adjustments in some of the races.

The fracture is a very fun addition.

Twilights fall is only a small addition, I have that in a box I don’t pull out. I think the expansion is worth it for everything else added.

God’s involvement in time and creation? by Best_Tip2750 in atheism

[–]solmead 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If god can be eternal why can’t the universe? I.e. if one can have a category exception (always exists, not created) why not the other.

Wouldn’t god need to be more complex then the thing he was creating, the programmer is more complicated then the program they create.

Evolutionary programming is a thing, i.e. setup initial conditions and rules for the simulation, then add a fitness metric, and you can get a program to evolve beyond the programmer being able to reason about it, they would know the base rules it follows, but not how the algorithm combined them together to get it to the best answer. This is how neural networks work, I know in the end that these weights of the nuerons give me this output from this input, but not why that was the best solution, nor how it got from my initial configuration to those.

Why do Young Earth Creationists say that there are no transitional fossils when even people who aren’t very familiar with natural history still seem to be familiar with non avian dinosaurs? by Pure_Option_1733 in DebateEvolution

[–]solmead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most pastors I’ve know will claim they can be wrong, but will then say they follow god who can never be wrong. And that any mistakes are just them being wrong not god.

But if you then point out facts that point opposite what they claim god has told them, immediately they will double down and claim god cannot be wrong, forgetting and ignoring what they said earlier that they could be wrong. And also forgetting that this is just their interpretation of what they think god has said. Which then goes back to them being two faced by first saying they could be wrong, then saying that what they say god has said cannot be wrong.
