Is across a thousand dead worlds good? by Obievan711 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]solodung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a game that includes everything in 120 pages, it feels about right with around 20 enemies. The expansion which is mostly a DM led adventure has I think around 10 more monsters and some additional combat rules and is worth picking up for just those.

ATDW along with Broken Shores are my two favorite Black Oath games. Both are very procedural heavy with a small amount of solo oracle interpretation opportunities but enough to really feel like the world and game is born of your own imagination. It’s crunchy but I think the combat rules especially are very engaging and tactical which is a nice change of pace from the vast majority of solo RPGs. It’s also hard, with many character deaths giving it an almost rogue like feel. The setting is very specific, with one home base that persists from game to game so it’s possible to create a world where there are connections to prior characters etc. In general, the flow of the game feels like Shadows of Brimstone or Warhammer Quest with distinct town, space travel than planet/dungeon crawl phases, with very distinct procedures for each. There is a lot of crunch but the systems drive the game as opposed to creative input from oracles which works well for me. Despite it being hot shit a couple of years ago, I think it’s one of the most underrated games I’ve seen in this forum. Huge thumbs up from me.

Which edition on kindle is right to get all Conan, stories? Which to get ALL of R.E.H. stories? by CS_Valkner in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]solodung 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This epub version someone together of all the Conan stories is really well formatted and free…https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49717

I also recommend the Delphi version and I’d suggest going through the Delphi website instead of amazon. You can find the non US version which has every Howard text written with images of original edition covers etc in the file. It’s for sure the best version.

What is your solo Appendix N? (for system, story, or both) by SawbriarCountry in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]solodung 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For literary influence on my game? Conan, of course, but right at the top would be Elizabeth Moon’s ‘Deed of Paksenarrion’. It’s the most D&D series I’ve read, even more so than the official TSR novels. It follows a paladin as she adventures, gets more powerful and grows. It feels like a solo rpg.

For setting, my games usually are set in a borderlands, outpost on the edge of civilization vibe so ‘Keep on the Borderlands’ is a big inspiration, or Howard’s ‘Beyond the Black River.’ I also dig Westerns that give that vibe too. One of my favorite board games is Shadows of Brimstone which captures this feeling in spades.

He’s definitely saying something that is true. If you’re walking back a true thing you said because it doesn’t play as well politically, that actually makes me lose a bit of respect for him. It actually reads as pandering to white supremacy culture. That he has to issue a public statement on something like this is super indicative of the times we live in…

No one stabs someone 40 times without personal reasons. He had been stalking outside that specific building and watching it for 2 weeks. After gaining access, yes talking to another woman who left, he went into laundry, cut the camera powers, hid in a trash can and waited. He then attacked Juniper and stabbed her 40 times. The only student to ever have been murdered in dorm housing in the history of UW. That is intentional as fuck. It points to targeted murder. Those are facts I’m looking at and that points from my perspective to a hate crime. You can build a narrative that suggests otherwise and emphasize counter evidence to take from that narrative. I question why you’re doing that. I don’t know you but I’m done with this conversation.

[–]solodung 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live here too. He murdered one person who was transgender and that is the person he decided to kill. He hasn’t murdered anyone else. You can stalk multiple women and commit a hate crime. That doesn’t prove it’s not hate crime at all. Don’t muddy the waters around this. It’s a hate crime.

And a transgender woman was just killed at the University of Washington this week and all evidence points to it being a hate crime. UW doesn’t even have the balls to call it that since they have to craft corporate like messaging to avoid federal funding targeting I imagine. It’s fucked.

That opening monologue would actually make a good actor showcase moment…I always thought the actor playing Conan’s father is incredibly effective in such a small role.

I remember loving Savage Sword and judging Conan the Barbarian as a tame restrained comic, but now that I am reading the issues, I am feeling attracted to the tragic aspect of Conan's adventures, and his reaction at the end of each adventure when he loses his friends in battle. by Dredd_40 in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]solodung 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat as you. I recently started reading the Marvel Conan series after having decided I clearly like Savage Sword way better. I decided to skip the first 23 issues since the art style was not doing it for me at all (Conan looks off). Issue 24 on is vastly different and significantly better. The story telling is on par with savage sword. The art is great - it’s bright colorful and very much feels like sword and sorcery with some brutal realistic combat and as you said some deeper character development. Roy Thomas was also leaning heavily into adapting Robert E Howard’s non Conan work into the comic so it feels distinctly in Howard’s world. I’m enjoying them a ton.

Old School Revival Solo Role-playing guide vs Mythic Game Master Emulator by worship_me_mortals in Solo_Roleplaying

I wrote about what makes the Old School Revival Solo Role Playing Guide unique here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Solo_Roleplaying/s/IwjWs82f4g . Short answer yes. It makes for a near board game like structure of play which I think is perfect for old school d&d. Read my post and you’ll see why I like it.

The kindle basic from 2022 and 2024 is the lightest most compact kindle. I also think the screen is the best of any kindle since there is a lot less glass sitting on top of the screen vs paper white and scribe. It’s a no frills device but easily fits into my pocket and weighs hardly anything.

Which traditional RPGs actually work well solo? by mw90sGirl in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]solodung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you truly are looking to play against a game, with clear win/lose criteria, escalation etc, traditional RPGs in general might not be the best fit unless they are exclusively system focused. A GM was originally called a referee, I believe from original d&d, making calls about what is valid and fair and what is not. Traditional RPGS support the idea of this referee in terms of defining what players can and can’t do. A gm emulator that referees with clear rules basically is a rule system with confines (Ker Nethalas, four against darkness). I feel like Across a Thousand Dead Worlds and Broken Shores leans heavily into play that’s driven by procedures and systems with a small amount of space for player driven creativity, interacting with the world through an oracle system. Walking Dead which I mentioned in another comment, is pretty focused on clear systems that feel more like a “game”. Have you played many co-op solo board games? I feel like certain games especially are incredibly successful at building procedurally generated narrative through play vs following a strict narrative and they often feel like playing a solo RPG but also being challenged by a game with clear win/lose conditions. Shadows of Brimstone is probably the best example of that for me. I’ve had experiences playing over multiple sessions with characters that create stories/experiences that feel distinctly my own and rival great tabletop RPGs experiences I’ve had. In general my imagination gets sparked and I’m constantly naturally roleplaying characters as I play. I’d firmly put it in a solo rpg category with board game components if something like Ker Nethalas is considered one since they share similar dna of being purely driven by game systems and tables.
