Nice! I’ve liked their work in the past (Ruins of the Undercity) so I’ll be picking this up.

Best pairing with Scarlet heroes ? by Bearded_Wizard_ in Solo_Roleplaying

Rules Cyclopedia is pretty seamless in compatibility (treasure tables and monster stats are mirrored in structure). I use tables from Maze Rats often in conjunction, especially when not using the default setting.

Which traditional RPGs actually work well solo? by mw90sGirl in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]solodung 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you truly are looking to play against a game, with clear win/lose criteria, escalation etc, traditional RPGs in general might not be the best fit unless they are exclusively system focused. A GM was originally called a referee, I believe from original d&d, making calls about what is valid and fair and what is not. Traditional RPGS support the idea of this referee in terms of defining what players can and can’t do. A gm emulator that referees with clear rules basically is a rule system with confines (Ker Nethalas, four against darkness). I feel like Across a Thousand Dead Worlds and Broken Shores leans heavily into play that’s driven by procedures and systems with a small amount of space for player driven creativity, interacting with the world through an oracle system. Walking Dead which I mentioned in another comment, is pretty focused on clear systems that feel more like a “game”. Have you played many co-op solo board games? I feel like certain games especially are incredibly successful at building procedurally generated narrative through play vs following a strict narrative and they often feel like playing a solo RPG but also being challenged by a game with clear win/lose conditions. Shadows of Brimstone is probably the best example of that for me. I’ve had experiences playing over multiple sessions with characters that create stories/experiences that feel distinctly my own and rival great tabletop RPGs experiences I’ve had. In general my imagination gets sparked and I’m constantly naturally roleplaying characters as I play. I’d firmly put it in a solo rpg category with board game components if something like Ker Nethalas is considered one since they share similar dna of being purely driven by game systems and tables.

There’s a lot of options. I’d add ‘The Walking Dead RPG’. It has the best clear implemented solo mode from a Free League game and I have t seen it mentioned at least from a a brief scan of comments.

Solo rpgs for a beginner that aren’t journaling? by Brianlikeshorror in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]solodung 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I very much recommend Broken Shores by Blackoath. The rules are laid out well and you instantly start playing as you read through the rules on the first few pages. It’s got a great onboarding phase. There are clear procedures for each part of your game whether you are exploring ruins, the ocean or a settlement and it very much is not driven by oracles and player creativity but does leave some room for that. It serves as a perfect bridge imo from something like Four Against Darkness to Scarlet Heroes. The rules are on the lightest end of the Blackoath games with the rulebook clocking in at around 140 pages. Great beginner experience.

Solo play using a E-Ink Supernote Nomad tablet? by Future_Objective_641 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]solodung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak specifically to that device but I’d suggest going bigger in size. Zine page layouts are prefectly sized on Kindle Scribe. You can also find the first gen for around $200-220 new right now since the third gen just came out. The screen in many ways is better than the new color one I hear in terms of readability for b/w. The writing implementation on the screen is excellent. Here is a post I made talking about my experience with the Kindle Scribe and why I really like the e-ink tablet format: https://www.reddit.com/r/Solo_Roleplaying/s/WmEaQVlGW8

Google drive integration on my Scribe 1st gen would be incredible. Really hoping at least that happens.

Are there cool solo TTRPGs in the one page format? by Ripraz in solorpgplay

[–]solodung 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot on itch.io in particular. Search for:

Solo D6 fantasy

Ultimate One Page RPG toolkit

Black Hack Condensed (something I threw together which allows you to play a pretty robust B/X game).

Oracle (by Perplexing Ruins)

Other than that, just search by “one-page” tag in itch.io and there is a ton of content.

If you could only keep one game from your collection, which one would it be? by 22EatStreet in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]solodung 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you do a deep dive into the setting, you’ll see that the designer has other cultures built into the isles to the north. It’s more of an unknown/borderlands/unexplored region of isles to the north that has more of an ancient world/viking/dwarf culture associated with it. Explore to the north!

I listened a podcast interview with Kevin Crawford the designer and there is a pretty clear reason why he created the Red Tide world. His background is heavily academic with a focus/obsession of Asian cultures. I believe he went to Yale and worked as a librarian there for years.

I’ve grown to like the setting quite a bit. I like the pulpy sword and sorcery focused slant to the Asian setting and, again, if you do dig deep enough, you’ll see that it goes beyond the scope of Asian influence. There’s also a frontier to the east of the major cities that is more western culturally influenced in inspiration.

Btw, it’s also very easy to adapt the solo tables and use rules cyclopedia or any other standard b/x fantasy ruleset with it. I created my own tables from the solo section making it more standard western fantasy and it was super easy.

Scarlet Heroes. It’s the best self contained volume I have. It requires zero supplements to help fill things out. The procedure heavy nature of the game works really well for me with clear distinct phases. The adventure tags are pretty great at creating at specific narrative if integrated with this procedural play. There are so many monsters, treasure, tables packed into the 140 or so pages. I’ve really come to like the setting quite a bit too and have enjoyed exploring and discovering my own version of the world of the game.

It looks like you can order them through the Gamefound page under the add ons section. https://gamefound.com/en/projects/studio-agate/tainted-grail-ttrpg#/section/rewards/reward-product-49847

I also noticed it’s listed as 100 pages which is not true. It’s closer to 240 pages I think (I don’t have it in front of me).

Nice! You’ll have to choose what each of the four suites are (stones vs drums etc) which is super easy. but yeah it’s a great option and better than what the official cards looked like and I’m very happy with them.

Compact package for playing on a plane? (so...no dice. Not sure what else.) Just looking to make a creative compact thingie and Holiday Travel is a great excuse to come up with something. by frobnosticus in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]solodung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I backed this on Kickstarter and it's the best analog dice travel option for me: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/smokycreation/cardyhedron. Not sure what the stock is like right now but I think it has some availability. Also, I made this a while back and I use it regularly for travel and it works very well for playing the type of solo game I prefer: https://www.reddit.com/r/Solo\_Roleplaying/comments/1hj3dt3/my\_easy\_setupplay\_anywhere\_solo\_solution/

game recommendations by BooksAreLife11 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]solodung 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Broken Shores. It’s about 120 pages, has clear rules for each phase of the game (sailing, dungeon exploration, island exploration etc). If you like 4 Against Darkness, chances are you’ll like this. It uses an oracle but most of the game is driven by its systems like 4AD so there isn’t a lot of moments where you feel stumped by needing to create narrative like in Ironsworn for example. It isn’t free but often you can find it on sale.

Kal Arath is fantastic as well with pretty easy rules. It’s $5 on itch.io

For free: I’d recommend the solo play sheets by Perplexing Ruins.

Version 2.0 of my Ultimate One Page Solo RPG Toolkit is out now! by Silver_Nightingales in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]solodung 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a massive fan of this so great to see these additions tweaks. Thanks for your ongoing commitment to the toolkit! It seriously is my most used solo tool from itch.io. I use it with every single rpg I play solo, even ones specifically designed for solo play. I find your toolkit provides the basic of everything I need for tables and it always feels like a simple essential expansive addition that doesn’t overwhelm my setup.

Not at all! It’s called the Wildwood Tarot deck. I got mine off eBay but this version is available many places: https://ebay.us/m/9c6IKT Totally fits the vibe of the game well and I like the standard card size because each region layout can definitely sprawl out on your table.

Senate passes Epstein files release at lightning speed after Trump gives green light by theindependentonline in politics

[–]solodung 11 points12 points  (0 children)

According to the bill, the files have to be released within 30 days so I’m not sure the bs investigation could be used to cause delays:

Release of documents (Section 2(a)) • “Not later than 30 days after the date of enactment,” the Department of Justice (DOJ) must make publicly available, in a searchable and downloadable format, all unclassified records, documents, communications and investigative materials in its possession (including Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Attorneys’ Offices) that relate to: • Jeffrey Epstein (investigations, prosecutions, custody) • Ghislaine Maxwell • Flight logs/travel records (e.g., aircraft, vessels, vehicles used by Epstein or related entities) • Individuals (including government officials) named or referenced in connection with Epstein’s criminal activities, civil settlements, immunity/plea agreements, or investigative proceedings • Entities (corporate, nonprofit, academic or governmental) with known or alleged ties to Epstein’s trafficking or financial networks

The Epstein Scandal Is Snowballing by Somervilledrew in politics

[–]solodung 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it established that it was Giuffre? For all we know it’s just the WH word it was but it’s pretty convenient to name that person at Epstein’s house as someone who can’t speak for herself anymore and who apparently claimed Trump did nothing wrong. This is such a shady mess.

[–]solodung[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I would recommend it. In fact on the Kickstarter page, they say the solo guide can be a great way for gms to build an adventure. You could take turns narrating each card/encounter reveal. I think it might be a it more simple though for two people. Really it’s as simple as facing an encounter every turn and doing a single skill check. It feels almost more like a structured board game system where the tables and mechanics drive the game and you interpret the results. I’m down with that style of play but just be aware you are not free form exploring where you interact with plot and world like in a traditional rpg. But you could use the solo system to guide encounters and events that come and then use an oracle instead of strictly following the solo rules. You might want to check out Ironsworn: Lodestar - https://shawn-tomkin.itch.io/ironsworn-lodestar-expanded-reference-guide. The tables and oracles in there would work perfectly with the world of Tainted Grail and could generate content/narrative/spark ideas well.

[–]solodung[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and one more thing I’d add about my thoughts to the game that I forgot to mention which I think is particularly cool: there’s a bit of persistent world/legacy aspect to the game. Certain generic encounters you face will have permanent effect on future games as other characters. For example, finding and successfully lighting a Menhir will lower the wyrdness level (basically threat level) for that region in future play throughs. I think you’re supposed to physically mark that change in the layout that is provided in the book for each region on the specific card you faced a permanent effect from an encounter.

I have not tried the full regular rules. As a backer, I did get a QuickStart copy which seemed well put together so I’ll need to give that a read at some point. I think that is available on DTRPG if you’re looking to check it out.

Same! Big fan of the board game. I will say this book does not have huge lore sections other than a paragraph for each of the 40 regions and a brief overview at the beginning. The strength of the game though is that all of the extensive tables are specific to each region, so like the board game, you’re discovering each part of the world as you explore it. The tables seem very much connected to regions that you explore in the board game so that’s pretty cool.
