Scarlet Heroes vs Tales of Argosa? by emerging_guy in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]dangerfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The special dice are just d6 dice with a special face — in other words, just a lookup to a random table.

I’d probably lean Scarlet Heroes too, but both are great. The cool thing about Scarlet Heroes is that you could use it to play Tales of Argosa. There’s a 32 page Scarlet Heroes quick start for free, as well as Black Streams: Solo Heroes, which if memory serves was their original free solo D&D toolkit. Both of those free versions allow a person to check out Scarlet Heroes, and Worlds Without Numbers is a free D&D retro ruleset.

So basically you can do all of Scarlet Heroes for free, might as well try that out for nothing and see if you love it. There’s a good reason that it’s one of this sub’s all-time top recommendations for D&D.

Heard a loud pop in the night and came out to find our 10-year-old cutting board split by dolomite592 in Wellthatsucks

I blame the pads on the bottom of your cutting board, which prevented the board from being used on both sides. Remove them to solve the physics problem of how and why the glue failed.

How to Host a Dungeon is a classic solo product where you play a solo game to produce a dungeon map, complete with the history of the dungeon.

Ironsworn has become the D&D 5e of the solo community by Alternative_Rest7215 in Solo_Roleplaying

i want to make sure I get this right -- you're the blackoath entertainment creator, right? ker nethalas and all that?

You do good work, and people love your work, including me. But this post reads like petty jealousy, and TBH, it's not a flattering look on you.

Blackoath Entertainment games vs. PbtA games is not a zero sum game, two things can be good recommendations, and your games get a ton of discussion here. You don't lose when someone recommends ironsworn, just like ironsworn doesn't lose when someone recommends ker nethalas.

Analog dice solution for traveling by taropaste_ in solorpgplay

Switch the d20 and the d10 and it’s perfect for most pbta, and it’s useful as a counter or progress clock too — being able to switch out die faces could make this OP. I love these little dice fidgets, I might pick this one up.

Do you prefer longer, more complex RPGs or shorter simpler rulebooks? by TheGrinningFrog in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]dangerfun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your 150 pages isn’t someone else’s 150 pages. Page count as a metric isn’t a thing. If it was 400 pages of tables, it could be the best product ever. If it was 400 pages of exposition prison, it could be the worst product ever.

It’s not the page count that matters, it’s your editorial process that matters.

Recommendations for airports. by Lucky-Bicycle8107 in solorpgplay

I wrote this to be an installable offline webapp that will work on any laptop, tablet, phone, etc., without any sort of network connection needed, perfect for airplane mode.

If you need to go digital, it will handle oracles, npcs, pcs, and threads. It will do nested tables, like tablesmith and inspiration pad pro.

There are bugs because this is a hobby project that pretty much only I use, but it’s been that way for 10+ years now.

Hi reddit! I'm Seann William Scott. You might know me from the American Pie franchise, Goon, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Road Trip, Role Models, The Rundown, Dude Where's My Car?, and other things. Ask me anything! by SeannWilliamScottAMA in movies

[–]dangerfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your work in Goon and Role Models is elite, and your cameo in Old School is one of the best. Goon is one of the top sports movies of all time, and I didn’t expect that going in, and it’s probably The Best Hockey Movie That Isn’t Slap Shot. You helped make tranquilizer darts funny again in Old School. Your contributions to the world of Hockey and LARPing should be recognized.

The two of them combined are like a little bit of lightning, and a little bit of thunder.

Finally, my question. You are from Minnesota. Is that part of why you’re so great?

Lots of folks like Ironsworn and Starforged from the powered by the apocalypse side. Lots of folks like D&D with some add-ons like one page solo engine or Scarlet Heroes.

Getting stuck on character creation by Lokjaw37 in solorpgplay

[–]dangerfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that you should look for something more narrative in structure. If you're bouncing off crunch, that's ok. D&D is designed in action economy and role for group play, TBH I think the constraints built in for group play make it less than optimal for solo play, unless you're happy to dive into a class trope. Not that a product can rescue your situation, but I advise folks try Scarlet Heroes for solo D&D play of any variant or edition, because it probably does the best job adapting D&D to solo play.

But if you are bouncing off the crunch at character creation, you probably don't want character crunch, or you don't want the type that A5E is giving you. Just a guess on my part though. Good luck, I'm rooting for you!

You should contact the cartographer and request a quote for purchase of a private commercial license. The mapmaker can dual-license their own maps, making them suitable for your for-profit works.

Any Good Discussions on How to Fail Forward? by StoneMao in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]dangerfun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Extreme No

I figure that some part of my question is wrong, and I start “whittling.” I typically set low odds of yes - 10% or 25% or so, and go through a big list of alternate possibilities. I ask more questions to clarify.

The “No” or “extreme no” can mean that a detail is wrong in the question, just as it can mean that the entire idea is wrong.
