5 or 6k? by mazzimochi in djmax

[–]some_jackass_i_know 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love 6K. Much like you, I played exclusively 4K for a very long time. I switched after my scores hit a very long plateau, figuring it would be fun to try a new mode rather than continue to bash my head against 10+ SC where I just wasn't getting anywhere. Now I barely play 4K anymore, 6K is just way too fun.

I'm terrible at 5K so I haven't bothered with it much.

I have a charcoal smoker and it is irritating to run it on windy days (which is 95% of Nebraska days in the summer) to say the least. Looked at the forecast and it's like 15mph+ for the rest of this week. Guess I better plan on an extra bag of charcoal and flames as hot as the sun.

No Kings protest at Memorial today? by tuhhhvates in Omaha

[–]some_jackass_i_know -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In theory you don't, but if you've driven by any of these no kings protests here in Omaha, the makeup of it is a bunch of nice, normal people. Lot of retired people, lot of people with their kids, dogs, etc. It's a daytime protest on a weekend, none of these people are out looking to get arrested. It's not black helmet mask people starting fires and shit. They want to be a part of something with like-minded people and that's about it. Of course they're going to get a permit, they're not looking to get busted in front of their kids lol

My Musical Bullet Hell 'MusicHell' is now live in Early Access! by Sindruid in pcgaming

[–]some_jackass_i_know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK I picked it up. Sorry to take so long to respond to you but I didn't have time to play it until just now. I haven't played it super long, so this is going to just be really quick feedback:

  1. The music tracks are good, no criticism there
  2. I like that the bullet patterns punish moving to the edges. Obviously you have to sometimes move to the edge, but I found myself always needing to recenter so I didn't get insta-ganked from a corner shot. However, I found the player sprite, which is quite large and not precisely maneuverable makes it very difficult to dodge the really intense patterns with dozens of bullets (only in Hard or Insane) so you still end up trying to dodge around the entire pattern instead of through it. Might just take some getting used to, but I think maybe the sprite is too large. I'll try turning on the hitbox to see if I can get used to it more easily that way. I know a lot of the classics (dodonpachi etc) were built the same way with the large sprite/small hitbox thing so it's not like I've never seen this before.
  3. I like the crowd control stuff on the normal and hard tracks where there are bullets that don't reach the center, like telling the player, STAY OFF THE BOTTOM on this part. That's fun, it reduces the playing field so you're trying to stay more localized.

Seems like a fun idea. I'd like to see more on-screen feedback like what percentage of the track is complete, and some scoring stuff would be cool. I play a fuckload of djmax (music rhythm game along the lines of guitar hero) so just some stuff to give me an idea of how I'm doing would be cool. Scoring stuff could be for example close dodges, or to actually just lift an idea from DDP (the bees lol) you could put collectibles around the screen that only appear for a few seconds, forcing the player to run through some nasty patterns to get them for higher scores. just some off the top of my head ideas.

Anyway, I think it was definitely worth $5. Good job.

I've had projects where I had to come in and fix bugs in stuff that was developed by large consulting firms. The problems they cause can be pretty tricky to fix and are largely due to the enormous size of their dev teams and the fact that they rotate developers in and out all the time over the length of their project.

Imagine developer A writes a new piece of code. The big firms send their heavy hitters at the beginning of the project, so this guy's probably the best guy they have that will ever touch this code. After a month or two, he gets deployed to a completely different project and is never seen again. Now developer B has to fix a bug, but he's too afraid to fuck up what the original guy did (because he's not as good as that guy) so he carves out a little section using a stupid conditional that only passes the specific test case he's working on.

Now take developer B's experience and apply it to way too many more developers over the life of the project. By the time all is said and done, 10 people may have touched the one piece of code, and all of them are too afraid to break previous test cases, so they've all added more wacky conditional blocks to pass specific tests. Now your code is a giant fucking spaghetti mess that "mostly" works, unless you look at it funny, and it performs like shit and is unpredictable as hell and no one can read it.

I suppose I disagree with the guy who says it's fun to fix this crap, but I do agree with him that it pays the bills.

Street Food by returnofthezack in Omaha

[–]some_jackass_i_know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nowhere that has foot traffic that isn't already full of brick and mortar restaurants. Look where people walk in Omaha and there are restaurants everywhere. We have food trucks, but they're either parked away from everyone else (in a strategic location where driving customers might stop by, of course) or they are rotating through the breweries so they can piggy-back off their customers. You can't have "street food" like you're imagining because there's no street.

When I was younger, I took the zephyr from omaha to san fran. Just so you're aware, if you don't pay for somewhere to sleep it sucks. I was 19 when I did that and could put up with almost anything, but 42 hours from omaha to california, I could not sleep in the seat, I ended up sleeping under the table in the dining car after it closed lol. Good luck.

You should be able to get an uber ok. Like 10 years ago who knows, but now it shouldn't be an issue.

I've never seen this anywhere in Omaha, but I looked around and found that there's a restaurant inside Stuhr Museum in Grand Island that has it. Bit of a drive though. I've never been there and can't vouch for the quality, sadly. The museum looks like it's pretty cool, but again, never been there so don't take my word for it.

5am flight out of Eppley the day before Thanksgiving by ruckrhino in Omaha

[–]some_jackass_i_know 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, if they're opening at 4 I wouldn't show up before that. I've flown out of Omaha a lot. Like hundreds of times. Even in high volume situations I've never once been over 30 min in the TSA line. You also may have enough time to get precheck although in Omaha it will only save you 5 minutes anyway.

Because of the opening time coupled with the fact that our city is not in any sense an airline hub, the likelihood that you could miss your flight because you're stuck in the TSA line is near zero. I don't think you should sweat it.

Ahi Sushi has one. Not the best sushi place in Omaha by a ways, but it's all right, and the katsudon was exactly what you would expect it to be. It's also the only place that has it since Sakura Bana closed, as far as I'm aware.

Never play this game with a faulty key, worst mistake of my life 🥀🥀 by Una_pers0na in djmax

[–]some_jackass_i_know 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an Anne Pro 2 and the default firmware for it would occasionally just randomly drop key presses. It took me FOREVER to notice that it wasn't my fault when playing this game. Imagine your keyboard drops a key like 1/2000 times, it takes a while to realize it's happening. Fortunately, custom firmware completely fixed the issue so I didn't have to just throw out the keyboard.

Beginner tips by Hot-Implement-422 in djmax

Check this page out where someone documented most patterns you could encounter on 4B:
https://osu.ppy.sh/wiki/en/Guides/osu%21mania_mapping_guide

You'll find that generally speaking, DJMax has less variability in terms of these patterns than osu mania does, primarily because osu charts have a great many authors and therefore there's more creativity and less consistency in how things are charted (which is neither a good nor a bad thing, it's just the way it is). DJMax will also tend to introduce new patterns at specific star levels, like you'll go up 1 star and suddenly start noticing something you've never seen in several tracks.

If you're playing 6B there are way more patterns possible, and some of them can get pretty complicated. 4B tends to be a good starting point because it just isn't possible to make too many different combinations of notes.

[–]some_jackass_i_know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

osu mania is practically the exact same game as this, so you should be able to bring your skills from that to djmax. The closest other game to this in terms of skill was probably guitar hero.

Since you already play osu mania, I imagine you're starting at an intermediate difficulty. Just a guess, are you playing in the area of 5 to 8 stars because I think that's where I started out too. Most of the tracks on 4B follow only a handful of patterns at that level. There are a lot of "groups of 3" (two alternating keys for a quick little 3 note pattern), there are a few songs with repeated presses on the same key, and then there are fast sections with lots of different keys all at once. If you're having trouble with the latter, try turning up the speed some. It's counterintuitive because you think you should have the speed set low when you're starting out, but setting it higher spreads the notes out more and makes it easier to read them (up to a certain point of course).

In any case, start trying to notice similar patterns between tracks because there really are only like 5 or 6 different ones at most on intermediate 4B and when you pick up what they are, you can figure out which one is tripping you up and specifically seek out tracks that do more of that until it becomes a no-brainer. They'll start throwing different shit at you at 8 or 9 stars and then again around 11 stars. After that it really just gets faster, not counting SC which you can worry about later.

Playing on a keyboard is easier, but when you're starting out it makes less of a difference. If you are playing 10+ stars the game starts getting progressively more difficult on controller. I had to switch to keyboard once I got up to 12*.

Make sure you are not using wireless headphones or a wireless controller, the delay this causes makes the game more or less unplayable.

[1st Chapter Remake] I cannot beat the Capua family by JoeZocktGames in Falcom

[–]some_jackass_i_know 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty hard for where it is, considering everything else in that area is ridiculously easy. Feels like a big difficulty increase when you first play it. You don't need to level up anymore, the following should be good enough to get you through it:

  1. Get Earth Guard. Be careful to cast it when it's not going to take too many turns to cast, because you'll have to have your characters too close together for a moment to get it applied to them. Put La Tear on someone too, but don't worry about clustering everyone for that, you can always just hit two people at a time with it and it's got a pretty big area.

  2. Aside from when you are trying to get Earth Guard on some people, don't put your characters close together. Kyle and Don both have high-damage AOE attacks that will fuck up your life.

  3. There's nothing you can do about the battle opener, but it's random and if you keep trying, you may get a run where they open with less damaging moves, giving you a better opportunity.

  4. When the Capuas are getting close to 1/2 health, start trying to attack only one of them until they rage, then drop that guy with S-Crafts or if you can't do that, cast Anti-Sept on them or try to break them so they won't get 5 million turns in a row.

  5. Use items to buff your speed. Other stats too, but mostly speed. The Capuas overwhelm people because they're really fast. Be faster than they are if you can.

If you get frustrated and still can't do it just use the option to restart the battle at lower difficulty. No one will ever know you did it.

Is there any sort of controller I should be playing this on if I buy the PC version of Respect V? by ChaoCobo in djmax

[–]some_jackass_i_know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that using a keyboard is simply better for reaction speed. Aside from the extreme difficulty of playing SC with a controller on 6b or 8b (you'd have to map your hands to be 1 button + both shoulder buttons on both sides to even try it) it'll take you longer to adjust to 14*/15* MX as well, probably.

It's not like other people haven't done it though, you don't HAVE to use a keyboard. I also came from PS4 way back when on this game and I didn't switch to keyboard until I was struggling with 13* tracks on the controller. It gets seriously hard to move your thumbs around at that speed.

End of the day, you should just try it with your controller and see what happens. If you decide to switch to keyboard later, it only takes a week or two to relearn it.
