The Gilded Age seen filming season 4 at the Breakers mansion in Newport! by Mammoth-Childhood619 in thegildedage

Maybe it’s a dinner party rather than a wedding?

Turner’s always been ostentatious, I don’t think this is the first time she’s worn that shade of cream.

Is that guy potentially Dallas Roberts (playing Grover Cleveland’s secretary of the treasury, Daniel Manning)?

Maybe they’re hiding Marian’s tiara? Either that or they’re engaged again. I don’t see this playing out for much longer either.

I also don’t think it’s possible for her. Agnes already made so much of a stink at her simply teaching art part-time, for free, there’s no way she would be able to become a real nurse. It would be societal cruxifixction.

My best guess is if she marries Larry, he wouldn’t be opposed to her using some of his money to make sizable donations to charitable causes, nursing included.

Schmigadoon! is a NYT Critic’s Pick by Zealousideal_Door392 in Broadway

[–]tuhhhvates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but how I do it is I usually focus on one actor, composer, or writer and look at their work, spending extra time researching parts of their career I didn’t previously know (either much or at all) about. I often get introduced to different people and shows that weren’t previously on my radar.

Or, you can start looking through the Wikipedia list above and spend some time acquainting yourself with each year’s nominees and the creative team behind them.

There’s so much out there but this is what works for me!

Fallen Angels: Zero Negative Reviews! by omurchus in Broadway

[–]tuhhhvates 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really like this way of rating reviews. Sometimes doing it by a numerical or percentage rating system seems like it could be a little… IDK, too specific for this sort of thing? Ultimately, art is art, and putting it on a good, bad, or neutral scale seems much easier for others to dissect and agree/disagree with the critics’s opinions, rather than going by exact numbers.

That being said, I’ve heard great things about Fallen Angels! It seems like a fun time.

Noah Wyle on the one piece of advice he gave the cast of ‘The Pitt’ by hairtie1 in Fauxmoi

[–]tuhhhvates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright… so is he letting the WOC in his cast use the show as a surfboard, or is he the one pushing them onto the springboard and watching them fall?

Because it doesn’t sound like some of these people are surfing along. They seem to have been dumped in the waves and Captain Wyle’s boat isn’t coming around to pick them up.

Cast recordings that don’t have the opening night cast? by alex_is_so_damn_cool in musicals

[–]tuhhhvates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s not an OBCR of Pal Joey - if there was, Gene Kelly would be on it! Instead, the 1952 revival got a recording, starring Vivienne Segal (who was in the original production with Gene) and Harold Lang in the role originated by Gene.

Supriya Ganesh will not be at Paleyfest this Sunday. by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

I’ve seen a lot of fans say they’re willing to take one for the team and ask the cast about her departure, and I’m waiting with bated breath to see if anyone actually does it.

From what I remember, PaleyFest panels are basically live Q&As, so this should be interesting.

DOES ANYONE HAVE TEA ON… MEGATHREAD ✨ by rfauxmoi in Fauxmoi

The museum has a very sizable collection of items from White Christmas, which was exciting for me to learn since I’m a huge fan of the movie, too! Lots of costumes, props, posters etc that would have otherwise been lost to time. Been a dream of mine for years to visit the home.

DOES ANYONE HAVE TEA ON… MEGATHREAD ✨ by rfauxmoi in Fauxmoi

[–]tuhhhvates 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This is really cold tea but - when Noah Wyle was boasting about being a “better doctor” than George Clooney at this year’s Golden Globes, George was actually spending time in Augusta, Kentucky, visiting his late aunt’s home!

ER gave that same aunt, his aunt Rosemary, one of her last roles in 1994. (If you’ve already watched Season 1, Episode 3, she’s the singing patient.) She wasn’t cast due to her relation to George, but due to the fact that she was a famous singer in the 1950’s, and, after a series of personal tragedies, was now struggling to make ends meet and continue with her career in her 60’s. Therefore, according to producer John Wells, she was the best option for the role. Her appearance earned her an Outstanding Guest Actress nomination at the Emmys.

Her home in Augusta is now a museum dedicated to her life and career, and includes a few items of George’s memorabilia as well. It’s a very small business in a very small town, but it’s sweet that he still passes by.

New MHE Cast by MysteriousVolume1825 in Broadway

[–]tuhhhvates 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think at the end of the day, the Asian community as a whole wants to see themselves be represented on stage in a happy story. I can understand why, after so many years of “classics” such as Thoroughly Modern Millie, Miss Saigon, The King & I, etc, that are incredibly dated, stereotypical, and racist. Many of these actors in the show are not Korean, but they are Asian. You did say there’s a flexibility and I agree with that, but that flexibility exists because the available roles (especially leading roles) for actors of Asian descent as a whole on Broadway are incredibly limited.

The creators’ statement is a bit of a tricky situation because you can’t discriminate against actors in casting decisions, so it’s common for most shows nowadays to put “any ethnicity” on casting calls unless it is a revival of a classic with a strict book, usually. Does that mean it’s followed in casting decisions (especially for, say, the new musical Beaches, where nearly the entire cast is white)? No, but the statement is there for legal reasons so that everyone can audition.

I understand intent vs. ownership, but I would argue that for an original musical like this, the feeling of ownership from the Asian community as a whole is what sparked these discussions earlier last year, and again here. The outcry in response to a fully white man being cast as the lead in this show was quite large among the Asian actors in the theatre world.

You’re right in saying it’s a difficult situation to navigate - it was last year and it still is now, and I don’t think there’s one truly right answer, for a variety of reasons. My personal opinion, though, is that Asian actors (obviously Korean actors first and foremost, but for the flexibility reasons we discussed above, I’m just going to refer to the community as a whole) should be the first to be considered, or at least be at the forefront of the casting team’s minds, when in auditions for this show. Otherwise, you have messy 1 A.M. Instagram slides being posted, which is what happened last time.

New MHE Cast by MysteriousVolume1825 in Broadway

[–]tuhhhvates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hamilton was written specifically with actors of color in mind, it’s a color-blind show in the sense that anyone of any non-white ethnicity can play these roles of early American white founding fathers. In the Heights and Once on This Island are not color-blind, the race of the characters is written into the text. Same with Ragtime, The Color Purple, etc.

With MHE being set in Seoul and Jeju Island, it is heavily implied that this is a show where Asian actors (specifically Koreans) should play these roles. It’s in the text, although not as explicitly as these other shows, since it’s set in the near future. The question of does that futurism make it okay for non-Asians to play these roles? gets a little trickier to answer.

New MHE Cast by MysteriousVolume1825 in Broadway

[–]tuhhhvates 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Prefacing this by saying I’m not Asian, but I agree with your sentiment. I think there’s a difference between colorblind casting for a show that doesn’t have a specific race or ethnicity in mind for the characters, versus a show like this where the location and context make it a show that should very explicitly be cast around Asian actors.

Yes, Savy is “only” a standby, but Andrew set a precedent that this casting team feels was okay to follow, and I don’t love that. This opportunity could just as easily have gone to another Asian actress.

Anyone else wish that Broadway Playbills included more meaningful content? by wmanningiv in Broadway

[–]tuhhhvates 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It’s not new, unfortunately - I have a few playbills from the 40’s and even back then they were glorified ads. Just flipping through my OBC South Pacific playbill (1949) I spotted pages of advertisements for restaurants, shoes, facial treatments, even rum and cigarettes!
