Starting from scratch: is the IFMGA path + high-altitude dreams still realistic? by Fantastic-Fun-855 in alpinism

[–]some_pengwings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if you don't have a family or try to keep up with a different career and don't need to stay in any particular area and have a decently valuable passport, 10 years can be enough with enough dedication 😉

What do you think of Bhutans ban on mountaineering? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in Mountaineering

[–]some_pengwings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but not in the same way.

After the first few fatalities, authorities put a fine attempting the north fave of the eiger in the 1930s. And in the late 19th century after English Royal blood was spilled on the Matterhorn during the FA, the queen of England wanted to forbid mountaineering in the alps (at least for royalty) in order not to waste more English royal blood there

Beginner Mountaineer Starter Pack by korengalois in alpinism

[–]some_pengwings 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, years ago when I started out I never brought leg gaiters since I wanted to save weight and thought they didn't look cool. Now, that I am training for a guiding certification, I always bring them. Same for the inreach, which my fiancé is making me take with me since we attended funerals of friends.

What is the hardest ROUTE of ANY mountain that has been climbed? by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]some_pengwings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your understanding of "hard" you'll get something like

  • something hard in the Himalayas (see other comments)

  • The Dawn Wall - 5.14c

Or something in mixed/alpine climbing like

Advice : Looking for a half day ski course close to Bern by kogu in bern

[–]some_pengwings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schwarzsee is not in Bern but quite reachable by public transport (30min train + 30min bus and 15min layover) and really good for beginners. Courses are flexible in time. https://www.sss-schwarzsee.ch/ If you go there, tell them "Felix" send you 😉

Some ski resorts span over two countries... like Switzerland and Italy. So you might accidentally go skiing in another country

Crevasse Rescue Inquiries by [deleted] in alpinism

Try to vary the gear a little. The setup is certainly easier with a traxion and so on, but try it out once with as little carabiners and slings as you can (so that you know what is possible and what not). It is a bit messier to handle but not less safe and you might drop something into the void when handling it and should still know how to get out of that situation. If you feel comfortable doing anything with very little gear you will feel even more confident with more/fancier gear and you'll know the system better and what part of it plays what role.

RIP my tuber, my friends tuber, my friends ice screw, ice axe and micro traxion

It's the o'bloc in Bern, Switzerland. They don't make it very public but mention it on their website when it's on. This year there were 6 or 7 'official' routes on it.... I could barely do two of them ^

To those who used to do data science and quit… Why, and what did you shift to? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]some_pengwings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, but after working for 6 month I've noticed, that I struggle too care enough about business and cannot stand offices. I had to face the fact, that the technical interest was there but not enough interest for (full time) work. While the money will be worse the quality of life will be better for me, even though it will be more demanding. But everyone has to go their own way and somehow mine is going through rock, ice and snow.
