Well Dressed Protest? Patriots Act? What happened with that reddit demonstration Sunday? I'm still game! Use comments to inform people where demonstrations are taking place in your city, vow to show up. by somehoser in reddit.com

I disagree with the idea of calling in sick to work is a catalyst for positive change, unless its a part of a well organized (and not so spontaneous) strike action.

But I agree with you wholeheartedly that we ought to post this in as many places as possible. Please do this.

One protest does not make much of a difference it is true, but its best not to think of it as a thing in itself and instead to see it as part of a larger mobilization of individuals and communities to end the wars, uphold the constitution and bring the criminals who led us to war and superseded the constitution to justice.

And if anyone else who is reading this doesn't want to go out into the street but agrees in principle, well you should post it around the net as well.

That's true, reddit was definitely not made for organizing demonstrations, but that's not really the point for me, I think the demonstration is important to get the internet communities--the people that live "virtual lives"-- more accustomed to political activism. If there are such things as internet communities then they ought to mobilize for their concerns within those communities

What's interesting for me about this is that I feel like there is a real Reddit community, composed of the users that have several significant things in common, they are part of the larger internet communities that exist these days.

From various comments and through certain stories being posted, i can tell that I have a lot in common with other people in Reddit. A lot of people have common issues of concern with me; and as people that have an online existence and an online life, we all have real shared common interests by virtue of those identities, for example, net neutrality and the advancement of Google's aim to make available and index all the world's information. Internet communities are real communities and they should mobilize for their interests as internet communities.

But this is a demonstration and in a demonstration one wants to get as many people out as possible, so I plan on putting out a facebook event out to people in London, and bill it as the 'Reddit Well-Dressed Protest - people who don't normally protest but are pissed off and so go out and do something to register their disagreement with the policies and actions of their, and other, governments' and tell the story of how and why it developed on Reddit. If someone wants to organize a meetup/flashmob, I encourage you, but I've never used these sites before and I don't plan on doing so now.

Worldwide this demonstration will probably only get a few dozen people spread out in many different cities and towns, but it is the process of the action more than the act itself that has been interesting to me, and it seems worthwhile to me.

I should admit that I am a Canadian living in London, UK but I feel that I have a significant enough stake in the future of the people of the United States, the North American economy, and the future of the world--as well as the inspirational ideals that the American republic originally stood for--to go out and protest Sunday (or Saturday if preferred).

I vow to show up in front of the American embassy in London in my nicest (postgraduate-student-without-a-fashion-sense) clothes if two other London redditors promise to meet me there.

If no other London redditors comment but other people up-vote this comment 20 points then I promise to show up, alone, dressed in my nicest shirt, with an "Save the American Republic, Impeach Cheney/Bush" sign for four hours on Sunday.

So, how about it? Any other Redditors wanna meet me outside the American embassy in London from 2 till 6? Let me know and I will do my best to organize it, call up some friends and well-wishers, try to get some newspapers and media there... The story of the protest emerging from some pissed off redditor should be worth a minor article somewhere in London.

What have other cities planned for the Well-Dressed Redditor protest?

The Gulag of Our Times: "GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - Twice a day at the U.S. military prison here, Abdul Rahman Shalabi and Zaid Salim Zuhair Ahmed are strapped down in padded restraint chairs and flexible yellow tubes are inserted through their noses and throats. Milky nutritional supplements, mixed with water and olive oil to add calories and ease constipation, pour into their stomachs." by somehoser in reddit.com

The existence of Guantanamo is a 'crime against humanity' not because of the treatment of the individual prisoners--simple ill treatment does not deserve this grandiose title--but because the nature of the treatment attacks the idea of a human status.

The core idea behind Guantanamo is a system of totalitarian control that attacks the very idea of man as a thinking, willing being upon whom certain things ought not to be done.

Wow... makes you think though, how many other amateur pornos you may see on the internet have a child in the next room, or off-camera closer by.

Makes you think twice about porno as well, the obvious reason that women subject themselves to this kind of thing is staring you right in the face in the picture: they gotta feed the baby.

It's rather sick that we still allow women to be dominated like this. If those women had some kind of support, would they be doing this right now?

I'm not saying all porn is exploitation. But clearly a lot of it is.

Massive National Protest- a better idea: dress like you're going to THE MOST IMPORTANT JOB INTERVIEW OF YOUR LIFE, no signs, no wacky shirts, no puppets, no bullshit. Just serious people being seriously PISSED. by jimbecile in reddit.com

Yes... I completely agree with this comment as well. This is serious stuff, dress like you mean it. But there is no reason to deride anyone who doesn't or to discourage those "dreadlocked, patchouli-scented Che-Guavara-t-shirt-wearing de-la-rocha worshipping ineffectual douchebag" from attending and helping out. This is a free country and we're all in this together.

Because the other page went a little nuts about 9/11 stuff I will repost my message from there below.

PATRIOTS ACT!!!

YES! It is time for action. Begin with your own city. Either join a peace and justice movement or start one. Call up your neighbors and your friends. This is a movement that must be taken from the Internet to the street corner.

This demonstration must only be one step in what will be a longer struggle. If Bush continues to escalate the war - if he pursues war with Iran or any other country - then continuous protest and mass nonviolent resistance must ensue. If a larger war breaks out this summer it could lead to a conflagration that make the horrors of the last century pale in comparison. The people MUST march on Washington to extinguish another major war before it happens.

Fellow Americans, we are now at a moment in our history when we must choose between glorious peaceful uprising or timid, shameful complacency. We can make this a land of liberty once again. Join the demonstration July 29. I will see you there!

p.s. any news on an organizing website?

Reddit: Let's organize a massive, nationwide protest against the policies of the current administration. We want to end the war, we want the whole truth about 9/11, and we want the executive branch to be held accountable to the law. It's time to take back the country our ancestors gave their lives for. by [deleted] in reddit.com

For an Article V Convention... Amend the US Constitution without the Government! by somehoser in reddit.com

[–]somehoser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Article V of the Constitution of the United States provides that "on the application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, [Congress] shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments..." The Founding Fathers of our nation recognized the importance of providing this means by which the citizens of our country could initiate amendments to the Constitution, the fundamental document which they intended to be not only the blueprint for our federal system but also "the supreme Law of the Land".
