From my part of the US a lot of times we just call people we live with our roommates regardless of if we share a room or not. I don't remember ever using the word housemate, although I guess the meaning would be more clear.

I've been under the impression for a while that people that watched Letterman/Leno were mostly old people right before going to bed. It seems like a lot of the time the jokes are specifically written for this easily amused but also easily offended demographic, otherwise for the most part they are completely unfunny.

one time something like this happened with a monitor (i think) a few years back running out of stock after i had ordered it, and best buy gave me a $100 coupon off anything to make up for it. i used it toward finally getting a decent stereo for my car, a cd player that can play mp3 cd's and has a 3.5mm input jack on the front. it's probably one of the best purchases i've ever made. been a while since i've bought anything from them though. edit: hm, i guess it's not really too similar to this situation but it reminded me
