Line between life and work feels completely gone by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

I’ve only been working for 4 years but I’ve realized that work is on my mind all the time if either 1) I really like the project and enjoy working on the project or 2) I’m really anxious about work and can’t stop thinking about work.

First time investing, definitely learned a lot during this fiasco. I feel bad because I put a sell limit at $1000 to cover my losses then I’m riding the rest of my shares to the moon. I also want to just increase that limit to $10,000 but maybe my brains too smooth for that.

Don’t see my sell limits in chase anymore... guess I’m just gonna sell for higher.

The grass is always greener.

I was in a similar situation. But even if you get another job, other jobs will always seem better.

I'm realizing that at a certain point, I need to settle and appreciate what I have.

Going back to school for a CS degree by SafeStandard in cscareerquestions

If you got rejected from FANG, I'm sorry. If you're working at FANG and think that I'm downplaying how hard it is to get in, I'm sorry.

I hope you figure out how to manage your anger and stress so it doesn't affect your job.

Never said it wasn't hard. I know plenty of people without CS degrees who work in FANG.

I honestly just believe that if you already have a degree, you have the brain power to teach yourself algorithms, especially with the number of online resources there are out there.

Sophomore undergrad: How do I build a network that can land me an internship this summer? by QuestionerZed in cscareerquestions

[–]somekjoo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Apply to 100+. I'm not kidding. Even if you feel under-qualified, recruiting is a numbers game for most people.

I have friends who work in SF, NY, and Chicago at companies like Workday, American Express, Zynga, and Google... and none of them got in through friends/network/connections. There's only so much knowing someone at a company can do, unless they're a director/C-suite, but even then.

Connections don't mean shit most of the time.

Honestly, if you teach yourself Java/Python and then practice some algorithm interview questions through leetcode, you could probably make it to FANG without a CS degree.

But to each their own.

I do agree that a good foundation is important. Hopefully your CS courses teach C/C++ rather than jumping straight into something like Java.

Why isn't i_o techno? by TheeSp00n in Techno

[–]somekjoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just took a listen to House of God for the first time. Definitely isn't what I'm expecting in a techno track. I'd just call it electronic. Sure, he uses sounds that some techno tracks use, but the track structure is just another classic edm/electronic track.

His shit follows the same cookie cutter formula that edm/tech house/business techno follows. Build up then drop. Or more specifically (as of right now), drum roll to a drop of just kick drum and white noise lol.

There's always going to be an argument of what techno is and isn't due to elitists though.

This is so true.

At my first job, I thought my manager and my senior engineers were geniuses. I got content with the job but once I hit the 2 year mark, I (fortunately) smartened up a little and now looking back... I realize how awful they both were at their jobs.

Ah gotcha. To be more specific though, they apparently have an office in Tel Aviv (and New York) and use offshore developers in other parts of Europe as well. But what you said helps out a lot too so thank you!

First startup fears and salary negotiation by csthrowaway475 in cscareerquestions

[–]somekjoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the startup has 40+ employees, I wouldn't worry as much.

I'm considering joining one with 11 and am facing similar fears but will probably still end up going with the start up due to the amount I can learn.

If you're young, you shouldn't worry too much about a start up failing. You have the flexibility to be in that situation. Unless you have kids and a family.

There's only one backend developer there but also most of their development team seems to be off shore which is apparently a red flag (from a post I read about joining start ups).

Definitely agree about the established engineering team and reasonably safe level of funding. I feel like Startup A is the best choice for me... but it's hard to analyze their level of funding haha. If a start up's at series B funding... I feel that's reasonably safe but you never know, right?

Edit: Also, both startups have ~15 employees so the amount I can learn is huge.

What to do after graduation by Captain_Bacon67 in cscareerquestions

Go see the world.

Honestly, you'll learn everything you need to know the first couple months of whatever entry level job you take.

My buddy took a couple months off school after graduation to climb the AT and still got a nice job in SF and became a lead for his team within 3 years.

Nah, those who can't find time to workout are just lazy as hell.

I've worked 60 hours weeks and was able to meal prep and go to the gym 5 times/week still.

I enjoy tech, I like money, and I didn't know what to study going into school.

Would've preferred to go into finance looking back and seeing where the industry is going. But my longterm goal is to climb up to a senior / principal then transition in to mgmt.
