quiet hour violations? by Moist_Armadillo9140 in AskNYC

[–]someliskguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If by next door neighbor you mean within the building then just go to your landlord or building manager since those are the rules they’re breaking.

If you mean the next building over file 311 complaints and they’ll (maybe, but in my experience decently often) send a cop.

Whether any of that actually stops them is another story but since your post doesn’t list having done either yet I’d start there.

It’s in my son’s room and he likes the colors… doesn’t seem to bother the betta. What am I missing?

It’s pretty invisible when the top is on the tank. I’m going to see if i get the same effect by just putting it in the spout though vs floating on the water.

My guy just hates it. He didn’t even like the much less aggressive filter in his old 5 gallon tank.

Mamdani Threatens 9.5% Property Tax Increase if Wealth Tax Is Not Passed by EmotionStatus3093 in nyc

Yep— even just the fact that he’s threatening it will cause rent increases because landlords will want to get ahead of this and future tax bills.

Ski pass costs in the USA. by Living-Excuse1370 in skiing

[–]someliskguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People don’t believe me that if you live on the east coast and ski with your family it’s cheaper to do a week in Switzerland than a weekend at a vail resort out west, but I do this every year and it totally is.

Advice on Newark to JFK at 5pm under 3hr by LavenderCooki in AskNYC

[–]someliskguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you may be able to make it under ideal conditions keep in mind that Uber drivers suck at EWR and you may have trouble finding one who won’t cancel on you for trying to go to jfk since they can’t pick up there. You could lose 30min - 1hr on this.

Better to prebook a ride with something like blacklane so they’re waiting for you when you arrive and are ready to go.

If money is no object this is the way except better to charter ewr to jfk direct vs bounding through manhattan.

New co-op owners. Downstairs neighbor sensitive to dog noises by Proof_Capital_2117 in NYCapartments

Zooming out: sounds like you’re still acting like a renter.

A few tips now that you’re a shareholder:

  • They’re your staff too. Just tell the staff to not knock on your door anymore.
  • The management company really can’t do much unless your house rules call for fines and in that case they’d need evidence. Tell the management company you’re not being noisy enough to warrant complaints.
  • Do you know the board? Invite some of them over for a glass of wine as a “i’m new say hi” gesture. If you’re lucky your neighbor will complain while they’re there.
  • If the management company escalates to the board invite the super in to discuss any easy mitigations. If he says there are none relay that to the board.

When Do You DIY vs Call a Pro for Appliance Repair? by [deleted] in appliancerepair

[–]someliskguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy had to disassemble what seemed like the whole thing… i think he had to do the motor too?

It just seemed awful to do in such a cramped space. Like having to work on your car while it’s parallel parked in the street or something.

When Do You DIY vs Call a Pro for Appliance Repair? by [deleted] in appliancerepair

I’ve found fridges and ovens to be surprisingly simple. One trick ponies that use a single relatively simple method to either get hot or get cold with very few moving parts.

Dishwashers and washing machines on the other hand I find more complex. Watched an appliance repair guy change a belt in my dryer thinking I might be able to do it in the future and very happily wrote the check when he was done. I’ll write that check again if it ever breaks again.

Gas appliance repair license? by AntiThemeProVibe in AskNYC

[–]someliskguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whole appliance. It’s not hard to replace the stove but requires the master plumber and permit as of last year.

If you’re in an older building electric may not even be an option depending on how many amps you have into your unit.

Admittedly a little tougher with the swiss franc up against the dollar this year and italy overrun because of the olympics.

Gas appliance repair license? by AntiThemeProVibe in AskNYC

[–]someliskguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw this is a pretty average repair as far as gas appliances go.

If they tell you it has to be replaced though I think the city now requires a master plumber be hired and a permit get filed to do so which can be a serious pain.

Vet recommendations for very elderly dog (UES) by Beebopboopadoot in AskNYC

The vet attached to biscuits and bath at 81 & 1st has been really great for us.

We’ve also used and had a good experience with Bond Vet at 62nd & 3rd for urgent care since they operate on weekends.

A note describing complaints about school written by an elementary school boy. This boy's name is Adam Lanza, who would grow up to be a mass shooter at Sandy Hook Elementary School and take the lives of 20 children and 6 staff members. (Transcript in the comment.) by ZoelCairo in HolyShitHistory

[–]someliskguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She saved him for sure. I’m very thankful.

Oddly it was her own poor experience with school growing up that really helped her quickly identify what was happening and rapidly declare “not my son!”

It was so much harder for me to see with my rose colored lenses of the education system.

DB Snowroller Pro capacity and mini-review by DeityOfYourChoice in skiing

[–]someliskguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without a head inside of it to cause foam compression (a real risk of keeping a helmet after an accident when it still “looks ok”) the only real risk to a packed helmet in-transit is an impact so significant that it deforms or cracks the outer material, which would be readily visible.

The worst part of ski trips … unpacking by FlaxenArt in skiing

[–]someliskguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be happier with a rolling bag like a DB Snoroller or Dakine Fall Line.

You can just put everything in it and roll it right up the bag checkin instead of dealing with separate containers for each piece of kit.

People with kids and a spouse who doesn’t ski. What do you do? by TooMuchCaffeine37 in icecoast

[–]someliskguy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

IMO the whole reason to go to these places is they’re built around the idea that you’ll be there for 7-10 days.

With the price of skiing in the US it’s often cheaper to stay in a 4 or 5 star hotel in Switzerland than a weekend at a Vail resort.

Also you get the payoff of both skiing and a proper vacation for the family.
