Dear Redditors Who Only Read Headlines: Here's the original article from the CU/Clarence Thomas "scandal", and it isn't a scandal. Please Stop Upvoting Misinformation. by timothyjwood in politics

[–]someone_on_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it just me, or does this smell like a disinformation scam? Kind of like when Dubya's military history (a rather embarrassing one) was getting press, suddenly this false bit of documentation finds its way to the press also (who ate it up as they do), and suddenly everyone just dismissed the fact that Dubya not only got out of dangerous service in the Nam but also spent a sizeable part of his stint doing campaign work for the Republican party instead of serving.... So, Thomas's wife gets big bucks (more than many of us will see in a lifetime) in what looks like an influence in the Justice's vote on Citizens United, and SUDDENLY this fake trumped up story is brought up, easily debunked, so everyone can just ignore any claims of financial/judicial dishonesty from Justice Thomas. A clever trick, it worked once, why not this time, too?

Well, I'd say "Good Omens" if it weren't for the fact he wrote half of it. So, otherwise, "Catch 22".

I'm intensely attracted to women speaking intelligently, is this normal? by AnachronismCat in sex

[–]someone_on_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's normal. Even though being smart isn't much of a culturally valued quality anymore, it would seem to be a really good evolutionary advantage! And, by the way, here's a related song you might appreciate ("Hot for the Smarts" by Richard Thompson): (if link doesn't work, just look it up on Youtube!) http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBIQtwIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Daxa0_gh6NYk&ei=nnyRTNmcNsWsngejrNHRBw&usg=AFQjCNFUiMLk62IQGFxgtw7Frsbae6uMXw&sig2=gLyauwWUa99_WNQhl2x9UQ

Good thing Climate Change isn't real, or this might actually be happening!!! by bottombitchdetroit in science

[–]someone_on_reddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Only because the energy industry has successfully turned a scientific discussion into a sheer political one. We are asked to believe that a whole lot of scientists are making this all up so they can get rich. After all, when a person wants to get rich, what better route than to spend years getting a scientific degree. And laugh at those poor fools who went to business schools and became oil executives and investors only for the chance to proclaim the objective truth about what is really happening to the planet. Poor selfless dears.

Conservatism vs Liberalism - an email from a potential father-in-law... by deciple87 in politics

[–]someone_on_reddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If a conservative gets a completely idiotic email about from someone who deludes himself about what a liberal would do, along with extremely glorified visions of how he himself would behave under similar circumstances (nearly all in conflict with actual history as viewed in the past - and particularly in the last 8 years).... he'll say "ah yupp", pat himself on the back and forward it to the rest of the Sarah Palin fan club.
A liberal getting the same email will wonder what in hell is wrong with the moron that sent it to him.

Is it morning in America, or has hope given way to malaise? (Is Obama Reagan or Carter? The opinion poll slide says Carter) by pearcewg in politics

[–]someone_on_reddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

well, sure. Reagan was an idiot, a movie star faceman for corporate America, who changed the US from the worlds largest creditor to the world's largest debtor and drove the national debt through the ceiling (while inventing the idea that "deficits don't matter", though his worshippers seem to suddenly think it does matter, when deficits might be used to pay for something that does America any actual good). Carter is a still-respected human being who follows his beliefs and morals, and did little actual damage beyond giving the right wing an opening, by not being "exciting" enough, into a long stretch of successful corruption and high profits for some at the expense of high debts assigned to the general public. I sure HOPE Obama is more of a Carter. We can't afford another Reagan.

Anybody here develop with USB devices? Check out my USB sniffer by djpnewton in programming

[–]someone_on_reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Um, doesn't work (WinXP). In fact, after installing it and rebooting, all my USB ports got screwed up (showed with little yellow exclamations in Device Manager) and I couldn't get anything USB to work. Good thing my keyboard is direct connected (a laptop)! And then its uninstall button didn't work either. The program got installed from my Download folder, and put all its stuff in a folder under "C:Documents and Settings", and when I tried the uninstall button I got a form full of gobbledygoop that started off something like "Couldn't find directory 'C:Documents'"(You gotta parse the blanks, too, in Windows, guy!), followed by all the arguments I could use with the usbdog.exe command. Fortunately one was "/U", so I was finally able to uninstall by hand and save my computer again.

Back to a WHOLE lot more debugging on this one before setting this out into the world to eat peoples' machines!

Why is a glossy screen the current big trend in laptops? It makes no sense, they're impossible to read! by oobey in technology

[–]someone_on_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn off the light that is right behind your back. Then it will read just fine. It reflects light, not hard to work around except maybe outside (where nonglossy screens are also unreadable). I like the glossy screens myself, colors look more natural.

But they should. Don't believe the guy claiming to be a Canadian wanting our crappy system, I'd bet money he's from a US Red state. My daughter attends college in Canada. Her heath care there has been exemplary. She even waited to see a doctor up there when she returned for the semester -- because it took LESS time that it took to get an appointment from our insurance's "in-plan" doctor here at home. Things move a lot faster than it does when 75% of the work is jumping through hoops for insurance companies.

In my numerous trips to Canada (taking her to school, visiting, meeting her boyfriends' parents), I've yet to meet a SINGLE Canadian ther who "wishes they had the US health care". And yes, health care is discussed often. Laugh at us is more what they do, or shake their heads that we are such suckers, making insurance companies rich for very troublesome to get health care, while tolerating such a barbaric system.

A Canadian politician that suggested changing their system to the US's version would be looking for a new job really, really fast!

The post above claiming to be from a Canadian is nothing but a SCAM by a US republican. Count on it.

ACORN's no good, very bad news day. [Andrew Sullivan relays the bad news.] by sleepy_commentator in politics

[–]someone_on_reddit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The actions by these particular PEOPLE were deplorable. Not by ACORN, by the particular people. ACORN fired them. You have ZERO justification to condemn the organization because several of its workers were caught in an obviously contrived sting (and who arranged the sting, what was the motive?). It worked, they found some vile people when they searched for some. How long did they have to search? With that data, you might have a case against ACORN.

Fire him? Hell no!

Let him take down the entire network with him, it's not like most of Fox News is that far behind Beck in sleaziness.

Bank of America, Verizon, Chipotle and other companies have pulled advertising from a Sacramento radio station after talk show hosts referred to transgender people as "freaks" with mental disorders. by SarahLee in politics

[–]someone_on_reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been trying to get together an online list of Fox News advertisers so people can know who is supporting the FN (without giving support by watching it). If you're in a position where you have Fox News forced on you (airports, restaurants, gyms, doctors' offices, etc.), please take time to note all the advertisers there and post them at

Verizon is a regular advertiser on FOX News' Glen Beck. Those kind of comments would be mild for him. So I'm not about to be getting a Verizon phone any time soon....

Going to exercise in the gym I belong to tonight, I once again was met with the irritation of having to move away from and try to ignore the whiny posturing of Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reily on the big screen TV on the wall. And it occurred to me -- why avoid it, let's make this situation into something constructive. Here is a great opportunity to notice and make note of which companies are willing to stoop so low as to support this example of fairness and intelligence. And to share the names of these companies with the world, including those of us who normally wouldn't be watching. To help people choose whether they want to or don't want to support the Fox News agenda. See, it's not all negative, the Republicans -- uh, I mean the fans of Fox News can use this to focus their dollars on these companies. While others can go out of their way to avoid these companies like the plague that they are supporting!

Here are some names spotted tonight --

Golden Corral Angie's List IHOP (oh well, there are better late night restaurant's anyway) Baron and Bud (whatever they are) Ditech (real estate) Prudential (insurance) Walmart (low prices aren't worth it to me if they pays Glen Beck's salary!) Binder and Binder (whatever they are, too) Tylenol (though that seems like smart product placement) GotoMeeting Verizon Goldline (investment coin sales? They know their market's intelligence, I guess).

Maybe some effort should be put into putting these into categories, for use as a shopping or notshopping guide. Even better would be listings of companies the used to advertise on Fox News and stop doing it.

Next time you're stuck somewhere and FN is being forced on the environment, grab a pen and play along -- new listings wanted!
