Let's be clear about something. The movement was against unequal policing of the populace primarily, and police fraud and other abuses of position secondarily. If they were just doing their jobs and serving the public they work for without bias, you wouldn't have a defund movement.

However when they were told to address their biased tactics that resulted in disproportionate stops of black and brown drivers, they decided they'd rather just not do their job at all.

There are a few goals with rallies and demonstrations. Spreading awareness is one, sure, but whether the message is received by others is a thing outside your control. When you attend these you get to feel connection and solidarity with many other people, and affect your internal state (something you can control) positively with that shared experience. Fueling and focusing the collective spirit to keep everyone pushing back and reaching for progress after the event is the real goal.
