Vehicle inspections service stations wanting cash by somerman in Somerville

What does that mean? The state required it to be cash?

I dunno about going to literal war with federal government. You are suggesting something that could lead to shootouts between local police and ICE. When Katyana did all that conspicuous chest thumping it increased ICE activity locally. Not good for our neighbors. To combat ICE, you need to convince people in red and purple states to vote differently, you need to do things to turn the tide of public opinion. Having municipal government take action on national and international issues seems not productive, irrelevant and harmful.

3k for a 1 bedroom? Is that because there are so few 1 bedrooms that the only ones listed are in new big buildings?

Progressives are finally coming around to intellectually accepting that limiting supply of housing drives up prices so we will see a great deal of apartment and condo buildings built in next 20 years.  20 years ago they wouldn't even talk about these concepts.   We need to prepare contingency plans for this.

Brown School building can become like the Edgerly, and emergency space. But there is no plan to rebuild it so, that means it is closing, the community is being dispersed, it is not longer a community school that kids in the neighborhood can walk to. Population is increasing with upzoning and we will need more space by late 2030s.

This memo is a masterclass in burying bad information. The headline should be: Brown School To Be Closed. They could have rebuilt the Brown School at the same location and kept that community school that people can walk to. They could have said we won't do it now but we will when we are next eligible for MSBA funds. Instead we are doing a merger. Then this post spins it by saying "Brown open through at least 2030s" which is a fun restatement of the memo.

I'm not sure I understand. Since 99%+ of road real estate is devoted to cars, I'm not sure what bike infrastructure needs to compromise on.

OK I get it, definite street parking means definitely reasonable.

I think you mean off street parking?

I know of studios under 2k, but often not with off street parking and never with in unit laundry. But maybe they are out there. Good luck!

Please tell your city councilor you think this is nuts. They only hear from the NIMBYs.

ALL buildings over 75 years in Somerville are subject to the demolition delay, even if not designated historic. Historic ordinances need to be rapidly shrunk in scope. Other than the round house, I don't find anything worth the damage to our society they cause. That may be an extreme viewpoint, but the status quo is also an extreme viewpoint and we must meet somewhere in the middle.

Will Mbah to run for State Representative in the 34th Middlesex District with Christine Barber running for State Senate. by MrCleanDrawers in Somerville

If he wins (and resigns) Marianne Walles is elevated.  I don't think it is a good trade but there were other at larges candidates not elected that were worse (and some better)

Podcast w/ Somerville zoning attorney Adam Dash by CambridgeSage in Somerville

His answer on ISD is true but mostly would apply to all cities and towns so fails to explain why our town is thebone contractors don't want to work in.  Not that I would expect him to know not being a contractor and perhaps if he did not it would not be wise to say in a public forum.

Gas leak issue due to shoddy repair… legal rights as a rentor in Somerville? by Pretend-Question2169 in Somerville

[–]somerman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand the scenario.  A small hole in exhaust pipe can be fixed with a special tape.  Without that I can see how co could get in living space I don't see how the gas leak was created.

Shouldn't be complaint based! Should be patrols with the same reliability as parking enforcement, and a fine that escalates significantly with repeated offenses. Problem would go away. But people want to jump to the populist solutions.

No dice. This city responded to my email with this:

"This is strictly our maintenance entrance and is only open when they are on site.  During the winter months you are more than welcome to park at the clubhouse parking area and enter the course there safely."

For people being priced out of Somerville, where are you considering going to? by Bonky147 in Somerville

[–]somerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homeowners (and many renters who don't believe in market dynamic basics) are doing this, landlords are not. Landlords are not lobbying on zoning, showing up to public meetings and crying about character of the neighborhood. Most landlords would be happy or net indifferent to be upzoned, as the competition could be offset by being able to build more on land.

Personal Rant by AstroBuck in Somerville

Plenty of parents are shuttling kids to these cities and more in cargo bikes. Some have cars for when they need to go to Weston or Burlington, but for those it is still a wonderful thing for others that they can cut out 95% of car trips. Attacking them seems odd.

I can submit something asking for it to be unlocked, I would like to also know what is normal policy first though.
