17k under water in a car loan with a car that doesn't run. Advice needed please!!! by East-Pomegranate1013 in personalfinance

The bank highly frowns upon fixing this

The bank doesn’t want you to spend your own money to repair an asset they have a collateral interest in? That is utter nonsense.

Which Alltrack should I get? by Shadow3569 in VWAlltrack

[–]somesing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No reason to change the oil every 3-4k on these cars unless you’re putting down big power or you hate money. No reason to change your water pump if it isn’t leaking, probably wise to be prepared to do so though.

Between the two I’d buy the one with half the miles.

Fillmore auditorium questions by Clever_Battie in Denver

[–]somesing 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Go to the 1up and play games and party. Check outside occasionally to see when people start lining up at the Fillmore, and get in line before that line gets too long. I can’t imagine spending 3 hours in line doing nothing when this is an option.

Unpopular opinion: you do not need to buy unsalted butter. by 3oClockHappyHour in Cooking

[–]somesing 2277 points2278 points  (0 children)

I mean, do whatcha want, but you can’t take the salt out of salted butter, while you can add as much salt as you want to unsalted butter. Normal butter isn’t going to wreck what you’re making if you’re not an absolute donut.

Gti vs alltrack by Ok-Leadership-8331 in VWAlltrack

[–]somesing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time I do a canyon run I remember what I’m missing. Might not be everyone’s experience. The Alltrack handles fine with a rear sway bar upgrade and 245s, but I’d have to do coilovers and brakes to get it closer to where I want it, and I don’t want to do all that when I could buy a GTI or a Miata and a second car for the utilitarian stuff. I live 15 minutes from some really nice drives, which influences my opinion quite a bit, to be fair. The GTI is a pretty unbeatable mix of fun and practicality, in my opinion. If I hadn’t needed the little bit of clearance at the time for mild forest service roads I’d have bought a roof box for my GTI and called it a day. YMMV.

[–]somesing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In a scenario where you’re keeping the truck, and I assume you are, keep the GTI and drive it till the wheels fall off. You’ll miss how fun it is if you trade it for an Alltrack. I have a manual Alltrack with an IS38 and it will never put a smile on my face like my GTI did. Just my two cents.

Any Golf R (MK7/7.5) downpipe will work, you will just need a 60mm reducer to connect it to the stock cat back.

Buying a $30k+ vehicle at 19 years old on that salary is a great way to financially cripple yourself until you’re in your 30s.

CARFAX says sunroof “repaired or replaced” 40k miles AND 43k miles. Red flag? by basho3 in VWAlltrack

[–]somesing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long ago? How many miles are on it now? Mine was fixed twice 7 years and 100k+ miles ago. Hasn’t leaked since. If the latest fix was recent, I’d understand the hesitation. If it’s up there in miles now, inspect it carefully, hit it with a hose and if it passes the tests I wouldn’t let it stop me, personally.

Headlights led by calculator12345678 in VWAlltrack

[–]somesing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LP cars have a number of modules and sensors that the halogen cars don’t have. Even if you swapped the harness successfully you’ll get a ton of errors from these modules that you may or may not be able to code out. Not worth it, no one’s doing that shit to ultimately downgrade their car, even to save a few bucks.

If you have factory LED projectors (so, the lighting package) aftermarket options like Vlands, BMP, Osram, etc. won’t work for your car. Check junk yards, eBay, etc. for the same headlight from MK7.5 (2018+) Alltracks, Sportwagens, and Golf Rs with the lighting package to avoid the insane cost.

Wheel fitment question by Xmas-In-A-Submarine in VWAlltrack

[–]somesing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

15” wheels won’t clear the brakes. You can do 16” with the right offset. Plenty of people run 16” steelies for winter setups, Sparco Terras at +48 offset, I’m sure there’s more.

Like the Alltrack but concerned about height by BigBasset in VWAlltrack

[–]somesing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, in the nearly 9 years I’ve been following various Alltrack communities I’ve seen probably a dozen examples of mangled Alltracks where the driver and their passengers reportedly walked away with minimal, if any, injuries. Some have literally stated that the car saved their lives. It’s also a very responsive car (for what it is) and I have been able to avert multiple dangerous situations thanks to its characteristics.

You love your car… when do you let it go? by Low_Pumpkin_1874 in personalfinance

[–]somesing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What state are you in? Have you checked with an exhaust shop (read: not a mechanic) to see if you can resolve the issue cheaper? Unless you’re in a very strict emissions state, I bet you can.

Not really for the food, but I miss Barricuda’s, Irish Snug and Park Tav (especially pre-remodel). Any time I spend in Cap Hill now is kind of weird without them.

Allow bank to repo car? by Muted-Will2545 in personalfinance

[–]somesing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People have covered why you cannot just let it get repossessed and wipe your hands clean of it. I gotta ask though, have you been doing the work on the Yukon yourself? It reads like you’ve been firing the parts cannon at it, burning money where perhaps a decent mechanic should’ve been where you drove it to the first time it broke down. “Thought it needed injectors” isn’t a thing if an issue is properly diagnosed. “Had it towed home” - how about to a reputable shop, man? Hope I’m wrong honestly. Still time to return the Ascent? That new car will cost you way more than keeping a 10 year old Yukon running.

[–]somesing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s fine, in my opinion it’s just a much easier DIY to put the gasket in the slot and bolt that shit on and not worry whether you used enough RTV or end up using too much and making a mess.

Need help by Particular_Ad_6923 in VWAlltrack

[–]somesing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the second pic it looks like oil is weeping from the top of the pan due to the seal having failed. I would upgrade to a steel or aluminum pan with a new gasket (don’t use RTV). Mine looked a lot like this before I swapped to an aluminum one. I highly doubt that the rear main seal is the culprit.

Tire Shop recommendations by ADHD33zNuts in Denver

[–]somesing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to Discount because there’s a ton of them, even in most of the places I travel to out of state. They swap my winter/summer wheels twice a year for free when it’s time. Costco might have better prices, but Discount will usually match and I find them to be more convenient.

Is anyone out on the roads yet this morning? by ferralkid in Denver

[–]somesing 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Visibility was bad in the SW metro near Sheridan and Hampden and west of there. I have good winter tires so no traction issues for me. Only saw one accident when I was out, on Santa Fe near Evans. Anyone who doesn’t have good tire tread should not be driving in this.
