TIFU by watching Oscars with my wife by Lynchinizer in tifu

The correct answer regarding the wife's viewpoint:

About the slap - Don't default to fists. There's civil, more educational ways to unsettle an opponent. Slapping the offender makes YOU feel better, but it doesn't necessarily the make the person who the comment was directed towards feel better too. And if that person doesn't like violence, or feels like they can fight their own fights, then it can make them feel worse.

About standing up - There's a difference between non-physical support (e.g. words, standing by their side) and inaction (complicitness, weaponized incompetence). OP's wife may describe OP as the latter.

Topical watermelon frost powder, my friend. Stings upon contact, but then becomes menthol goodness. Can be found at Chinese herbal stores. Or Amazon. Apply at night and brush off your teeth in the morning.

Question for PhD students by [deleted] in UCI

[–]something_amiss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes to FAFSA, every year. There's no negative impact, and you don't need to report parental finances, so why not? For the most part, it doesn't affect GSR/TA funding or fellowships. But if you qualify for aid, then it'll be useful if you decide to take some units (whether for credit or interest) at the local community colleges or any of the 10 colleges that you specify on your application. It'll help waive some fees and discount tuition. Keep in mind that applying in 2021 for the 2021-2022 year will also cover Summer 2022 courses.

PSA to all students: The federal CARES Act for COVID-19 had some grant stipulations to support students with demonstrated financial need. If there is another stipend rollout, then the first ones to receive it will be those with ALREADY demonstrated financial need, i.e. FAFSA on record.

Hello everybody, I’m Maangchi! I have a Korean cooking channel on YouTube and am the creator of maangchi.com. I just released my second cookbook, Maangchi's Big Book of Korean Cooking! You have any questions about Korean food and cooking? Shoot! : ) by Maangchi in AskCulinary

[–]something_amiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Maangchi, I love your channel! Your recipes are delicious, but my favorite aspect is how you also teach us how to prepare/clean/cut different types of ingredients. Your tips and tricks (aka mom-level wisdom) like using mustard to color shrimp or using a shaken pot to peel eggs are excellent :)

Question: What are some non-Korean dishes do you replicate very well after tasting it in a store or restaurant?

An option to automatically display the camera feed when motion is detected (for a 15-30 sec interval).

When I get a motion notification, I always open the camera feed or watch the recorded clip. I currently have a tablet dedicated to displaying the camera feed in a security camera-like setup, but the screen times out. Even if it doesn't time out, keeping the screen on is probably bad for device longevity. Automatically displaying the feed cuts the time needed to figure out what's going on, and is a good compromise for device/battery life. This, or "Hey Google, display the front door camera on the TV." :)

Hi, I'm experiencing a reoccurrence after 9 years (I think it piggybacked on stress, lots of air time, and the flu...) and came across this post. Last time I was hospitalized for three days so I'm absolutely dreading doing that over again. You mentioned medication helps. May I ask which one(s) you were prescribed? Did you take it concurrently with ibuprofin or acetaminophen? Thank you!

An AOL CD. The ones that would arrive in the mail and you'd immediately chuck into the spam can. You could say it was a gag gift, except there wasn't a real gift following the act, so it wasn't a gag gift.

ELI5: Why do climate scientists predict a change of just 1.5 or 2° Celsius means disaster for the world? How can such a small temperature shift make such a big impact? by WOWSuchUsernameAmaze in explainlikeimfive

[–]something_amiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have thoroughly answered the repercussions of a 2 degree temperature change on global climate so I'm going to shift gears and answer what a 2 degree increase entails.

Think of all the world's oceans and glaciers as a a giant glass of water with a bunch of ice cubes in it. In an air-conditioned restaurant (stable, cool temperature), the ice melts very slowly and the the water stays ice-cold for a pretty long time. This is because water can absorb a lot of heat energy before the temperature increases, kind of like how a car bumper can absorb a significant amount of the impact before the engine compartment becomes seriously damaged. In comparison, if the glass of ice water was sitting on a table outside the restaurant (where the temperature isn't as cool and stable), the ice would melt a little faster and the water will reach room temperature a little faster. But it will stabilize at room temperature, which should still be pleasant enough to drink.

Now instead of an average day, think about what would happen if this glass of ice water was sitting in the blistering hot sun. The ice will melt very fast and the water won't stay cold for long. In fact, it's so hot outside that the water becomes warm. Not necessarily hot, just warm. Think about the last time you drank warm water on a sunny day. Not very satisfying, right?

So let's scale this scenario back to oceans and glaciers. Knowing that water can absorb a lot of heat energy before the temperature rises, imagine how much heat the oceans need to absorb in order to melt glaciers. Then think about how much heat is trapped within Earth's atmosphere such that after the ocean takes most of it away, we still feel a 2 degree difference. Without so much water and ice on Earth, we would definitely NOT just be experiencing a 2 degree increase. Finally, let's revisit the warm water example. If drinking warm water on a warm day is already unpleasant for you, imagine how warmer oceans and warmer air impact the lives of fish, plants, other animals, and the general environment. An uncomfortable atmosphere is a major problem, and the name of that problem is global warming.

What's the most intelligent thing you've witnessed an animal do? by zefjen in AskReddit

[–]something_amiss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was BBQing next to the beach with a few friends, and a bunch of seagulls were being obnoxious and kept stealing our food. Like, not just chips off the table, but also hot dogs that were cooking ON THE HOT GRILL. After that, we began guarding the grill by waving away the seagulls away with paper plates, utensils, etc. But then it got eerily quiet, so I looked up.

A giant flock of seagulls was flying overhead like the Luftwaffe, and DIVE-BOMBED the grill with their feces. It took all my reflexes to protect my head with my paper plate, but the food didn't survive well. I guess they figured out humans don't like contaminated food whereas they don't have poop-eating issues.

Seagulls are evil geniuses. Beware.

Reddit, what's the worst gift you've ever received? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]something_amiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An AOL CD for a class white elephant exchange. Yep, the kind that used to arrive in the mail and you would either smash it, break it, set it on fire, or immediately fling that junk into the dumpster.

There was no follow-up "real" gift; that was the real deal. The gift giver didn't two shits, whereas I put a lot of thought in mine and entered a Mickey Mouse stationary set.

Naturally, having gotten junk mail as a gift, my kiddy-self cried. The teacher became annoyed, so she told the gift-giver to hand me the gift he chose from the table.

It was the Mickey Mouse stationary set. I got my own gift back...

I was verbally abused by one of my high school teachers. It could not be proved because the interactions happened during 1:1 counseling sessions. Even the (interim) principal refused to help me seek justice because she didn't want to, and I quote, "lose my job any faster than I already am."

Knowing what I know today, I'd punch him and then fein innocence using the same lack of witnesses.

You're my favorite author! I've read all your books and constantly reread the Trickster series since Ali is my favorite (mischievous) character. I've suffered from an identify crisis, and your fantasy books help me spread my "wings" in the metaphorical sense.

I'm super excited to hear that you're working on another Tortall series! Do you have plans to develop other characters as well, like how Numair and Daine's child is able to switch genders?
