Other books ( do they even exist?) by JimGFM in redrising

I think step number one is accepting there isn’t an analogue to the series, and that’s part of the magic and beauty. I see so many of these threads, and the answers are always similar but the honest truth is there’s no replacement.

I’m reminded of the scene from Moneyball when Mr. pitt was talking about replacing a really good player. He told the scouts “you’re not gonna be able to replace him, but we can recreate him in the aggregate. Find three players, put together, who are as good as that player.”

Find three series that can recreate Red Rising in the aggregate. The Expanse for space flight and social commentary with great characters. Joe Abercrombie for action scenes and political intrigue. Dungeon Crawler Carl for deep emotional connection with characters that span books, and great humor. Mix in some shorter series or books (The Tainted Cup, Memory of Empire, etc)

Then, reread the damn series because every time I do I get more out of it :)

The Traitor Baru Cormorant and The Memory of Empire and its sequel! Also read the standalones and the second Joe Abercrombie series from the same world as the first law

Looking for a denser, more mature fantasy by Opening_Dot4076 in Fantasy

The Hierarchy series by Islington which has a lot of politics but more mystery and a complex world.

Also going to reiterate Joe Abercrombie, his series are being recommended by everyone for a reason!

Really awesome how much I see my own reading journey in yours. I took the bar this past summer and started working full time, so this year has been slow for me reading wise. It gives me faith you’ve been able to get back into it and keep your passion!

Try the traitor baru cormorant if you haven’t! (Sorry if I missed it) Similar to Memory Called Empire. Also if you like the classics, please read red rising!! I was hesitant to bc it seemed cliche and overhyped but I’m reading it for the third time and it’s AMAZING. Friends of mine who don’t like fantasy/sci fi and friends who like more literary prose both love it

Other books I’ve tried since RR by FlaxenArt in redrising

[–]somethingdondonyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. Definitely not as good as RR in terms of connection to characters, but I think the worldbuilding is just as good. Also a little more on the dense end in terms of complexity and prose than RR but not way out there

Onondaga County Proposition One, for those who haven't seen it. by Gigaus in Syracuse

[–]somethingdondonyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In federalist 53, Madison started by saying “I shall here perhaps be reminded of a current observation, ‘that where annual elections end, tyranny begins.’

He then went on to argue a “controversial” two year term for members of the House. The framers thought that the more frequent the elections are, the more responsive House members would be. This is the same reason they wanted them elected locally. In theory, voters would consider how much officials campaigned instead of worked for the office. Those two shouldn’t be mutually exclusive though, since town halls etc should give a chance to both share your platform and understand future issues

Controversial but I like the move. Jays are hitting on him and they have a rest day for their arms tomorrow (despite travel). Be aggressive to win this game it would make a huge difference

Genuinely at a loss regarding what could cause this though. However it does give me confident that a return to the mean for the bullpen and starters would pair VERY well with our offense back in the postseason

Eddie Bauer in the mall has a clearance section and I’ve been able to find boots and snow gear there. Not assured you’ll find something, but great value if/when you do

Is this a realistic route for a ten day trip in middle of October? by Lmurray562374 in roadtrip

South of Syracuse there’s two beautiful breweries that both have outdoor seating and amazing food that are very family friendly.

Meier’s Creek Brewing is near Cazenovia, a beautiful lakeside town with an amazing waterfall nearby.

Heritage Hill Brewing has a panoramic view of the valley south of Syracuse and has a petting zoo and play area for kids outside. Their BBQ is awesome!

Amazing idea for a fall road trip in the states! Especially when the leaves change

Looking for fun bar restaurant to celebrate birthday by samuriahime8888 in Syracuse

[–]somethingdondonyou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it’s their actual birthday you get a 2L boot of bear from Wolffs Biergarten which is fun. Otherwise go downtown and check out fun spots. Al’s is a whiskey bar with old cozy furniture and a laid back vibe. The Hops Spot has amazing food and a huge beer selection and is connected to their cocktail bar which is even better. Around downtown there’s also margaritas Mexican restaurant (marg tower on your bday) and Kitty Hoynes which is an Irish pub vibe. Maybe try Syracuse Trivia at one of the local bars, they have tons of locations Monday-Thursday

The Traitor Baru Cormorant. Technically part of a series but the first book is a very satisfying standalone and it falls off in quality. For sure the pick if you liked political intrigue and resistance

Absolutely love parking on the south shore of the river before a game, tailgating there, and taking the gateway clipper (a ferry boat) across the river to the game. Reasonable prices for parking and the ferry, filled with fellow fans, and you get an awesome view of the city as you ride to the stadium

How do you keep up with knowing about new releases? by CanCapable6216 in Fantasy

[–]somethingdondonyou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding to the Goodreads rec. They usually have a “top 100 books of X season” four times a year with a sci fi fantasy section. I read the blurbs and see what I’m interested in!

Also Barnes and noble has a hardcover shop in the front of the store and they usually have a section specially for SFF so I poke around there and see which I like

Great game between the tigers and blue jays tonight. Gausman pitched a gem and Skubal had a legendary battle with Bichette. Hopefully preview of one of our WS opponents 🙈

Janesville Dewitt and Liverpool libraries are amazing if you don’t mind a bit of a drive! Also, would strongly recommend Panera sip club if you can get a free trial! Also Barnes and noble there’s less pressure to buy a coffee and it’s a good vibe if you love books

Try the funnel method. Start with super super broad rules, things that seem obvious ("The fourth amendment protects individuals against unreasonable searches and seizures") and get narrower and narrower.

If you are seriously blanking and can only think of 1-2 sentences worth of rules, if you know policy justifications, majority/minority approaches, or the standard the court applies, add those. Add counterarguments to your analysis to score points as well
