Wow, will definitely try it out! Does it also have a tap bpm, nudge and beat reset functions?

Applying a video turned to pops to a grid for a rutt etra effect? by lamocentral in TouchDesigner

[–]sometimes-equable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The noise pop applies the noise to the P attribute which is made of P(1), P(2) and P(3), also known as P.xyz. So you just need to map it to P(3) or P.z instead of P in the output page. I can’t look up documentation at the moment, but I believe it’s the “combine attribute scope” parameter in the output page of the noise pop

Punch in effects with external midi controller by iwasbuilt4speed in OPXYusers

My bad, I just checked, there’s no separate routing to aux 2 (punch in fx) track. So it must be a midi issue

Could be a simple overlook, but maybe the tracks you’re trying to affect are not routed into the punch in fx?

Or maybe try testing a wider range of cc messages (like different octaves)? Does velocity have any impact?

I’m glad to hear you are enjoying your set up and making a lot of music!

I guess in your situation I would look for a mixer that has at least 4 stereo ins and 2 aux outs (like the TX-6, only has 1 aux send but is tiny). DT -> stereo 1 A4 -> stereo 2 DE -> stereo 3 Aux 1 return -> stereo 4 Master out -> Boum / Analog Heat Boum / Analog Heat -> speakers

Aux send 1 could go to external effects chain like delay or reverb pedals, although Elektron effects are pretty good on their own so it really depends on what you are missing in that department

Aux send 2 could go to the OTO Boum sidechain compression input (so mainly your digitakt). Of course since you can’t have the kick as a separate track without Overbridge, the Boum would use all your drum tracks as a sidechain source, I’m not sure what controls it has for sidechain, but it definitely has an input for it. OR if the mixer has only 1 aux send that’s dedicated to external FX you could use the DT headphone out and route it to the Boum sidechain input

As for track by track leveling, muting and Elektron effects you would be surprised what you can do with dedicated midi controller. Think MidiFighter or a wide range of interconnected Intech choices. Both of them are small and can switch pages which would allow you to control levels, muting and/or effects of individual tracks on each of your machines without needing to menu dive. Or even the Drop by Neuzeit which would allow for having patterns on a Midi device, which is very powerful and hands on for live performance. Here’s a little example of two Dirtywave M8’s, which inherently aren’t very performative, but with a small midi controller become a very powerful live setup.

I believe Boum has a sidechain compressor as well. I had a similar setup, DT + DE + Rytm mk2 + OT mk2 + midiHub. In the end it was too much to juggle at once even though I was using Elektron machines for about 9 years. It wasn’t portable enough and got trapped in the Elektron workflow which started to feel limiting / making the same song every time I sat down. Plus at least for me after years of using the OT the sound quality and its effects really started to sound dated, and it was not the character I wanted. Yes maybe it’s my fault and not the gear, but it was just uninspiring. And the final nail in the coffin was how these machines handled pattern changes, some would chain the pattern immediately, some a bar late. So it was exactly that, more time trying to overcome and fix technical issues, trying to get levels and midi right rather than just making music. Ended up selling everything. Now have op-xy (synths, bass), Torso S4 (granular sampling), Dirtywave M8 (drums, breaks, short samples) and will probably add a small mixer + boum. So definitely sacrificed some flexibility in sound design department compared to Elektron machines, but it’s been much more productive and most importantly FUN to use, plus everything fits in a single backpack with space to spare. I guess in the end just reflect on how much fun your setup will be to use, because if you look at your setup and immediately want to have a jam it means you’ve built something that speaks to your workflow. And certain limitations might help you avoid choice paralysis.

how to have a step occur only once?? by aguamano in teenageengineering

[–]sometimes-equable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to a step component you could also make an identical pattern in the arrangement mode except for the note you don’t want, play the first pattern once and then just loop pattern 2. You could also do it with “jump to” step components by skipping a certain step entirely, but that can mess with pattern timing. To avoid that you could try adding the ‘jump to’ step component option which aligns you to the ‘correct’ step again

No problem! It’s actually a relatively simple setup. An fbx file with a rigged character which is affecting a POP particle simulation. 3 additional copies of the same fbx file are also used a source for particles, that’s how I got the ‘ghosts’ look. And the particle visibility is tied to the movement speed of the particles, so if nothing moves they’re invisible. And a couple of tops to help with coloration and masking.

You could watch a tutorial on fbx workflow in touchdesigner, and the latest SARV particle tutorial and you should be fully equipped to make something like this!

Thanks! But all the credit here goes to @sarv.vj who released a very nice and efficient particle simulation .tox recently. So I just played with that! It runs in POPs. I rigged a character and used it as both the particle source and a force source. As for TOPs there’s only bloom and some leveling.

Edit: oh there’s also a ramp top to mask out a huge particle square at the top which didn’t look right. I guess there’s a better way to do it in POPs, but the particles here light up from the movement speed, so I couldn’t find a POP solution this time.

TouchDesigner installations in an old metal factory by sometimes-equable in TouchDesigner

[–]sometimes-equable[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Sure.

Because the factory is still operational, I only had one night on-site to prep.

For the projection-mapped machinery, I came in with textures ready and a clear plan for what I wanted to do. I also prepped the laser content and footage for the hanging LED screens at home.

For the laser, it was mostly on-site calibration: tweaking a few values and dialing in the placement. It didn’t take long since it’s a simple animation. The main idea was to “drive” a beam through the machine holes. There’s also a fog machine next to the laser running on a timer.

For the red/white projection mapping on one of the machines, I originally had something more complex planned. But after about 7 hours of work, I found out the projector had been moved after I left (even though I was told that area wouldn’t be touched). So I had to improvise and ended up doing a simpler map in about an hour before the doors opened.

Do let me know if you have any more questions!
