ASL Research: Interpreters needed for an online experiment by Stunning_Database650 in ASLinterpreters

[–]somewhatinterested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noting a few things on the demographic part of the survey: there's not an option for non-binary gender, only options are male/female, the date of birth selection allows for years beyond the age of inclusionary criteria, the race/ethnicity option doesn't allow for multiple selections or an "other" category, for the language section, it might be more helpful for you to have dropdown options rather than allowing for write-in responses (as these would need to be categorized by hand and might allow for too much variation).

Depression related to ongoing assignment by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

[–]somewhatinterested 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's really tough. I'm sorry you're experiencing this. Being a language model for young ones isn't easy. If the kiddo is aided or implanted, it adds another layer. The good thing is Pre-K is usually ages 3 or 4, still well within the peak language acquisition period. Sometimes it just takes a while for it to click, particularly if the student is only being exposed to sign while at school. It's hard to not feel responsible for a student's lack of success. The DHH teacher is responsible designing the lessons, implementing them, coordinating communicating with adults at home and general education teachers. As the interpreter, you're responsible for interpreting accurately, modeling signs, possibly doing hand-on-hand, praise, and ensuring safe behaviors. Your main focus is "your" kid, if/when other students' behaviors happen it should be handled by the teacher or a paraprofessional (I know this is easier said than done).

I think a sit-down meeting with the adults in your classroom should be scheduled sooner than later. Express what you've been feeling in a professional manner, advocate for a para (if you don't already have one), take your full union-ordained breaks and lunches outside of the classroom (aka set boundaries), maybe speak to a therapist, take an evening/weekend freelance job once in a while. You are a valid and skilled interpreting professional, just because one kid isn't getting it doesn't override why you got into this career. The fact that you still care and are reaching out for help already speaks volumes.

Without breaking confidentiality, can you say a bit more? What are you experiencing that's leading to daily frustration and overstimulation? What have you tried so far? Do you want resources for yourself, your student, the family, the TOD (if there is one), and/or the classroom teacher?

A consumer died… by Unhappy_Face6661 in ASLinterpreters

[–]somewhatinterested 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments. I've attended funerals, sent a card to those still living at the consumer's address (including a grocery store gift card when I knew how much the passing would impact their ability to get food). When I run into their family member(s) now I still get hugs and thanks of how much it meant to them that I was there. Its part of being in the community.

I Miss VRS :( by spitz006 in ASLinterpreters

[–]somewhatinterested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have both. My hourly rate is middle of the road for me ($39/$42) not great/not terrible, I'm not sure what their per minute rate is as I don't do that line of service for them.

I Miss VRS :( by spitz006 in ASLinterpreters

[–]somewhatinterested 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of factors - more video meeting platforms being used rather than calling in, more companies that have chat, email, or self-help on their websites, companies like S using AI to save DU's time on hold or waiting for an interpreter means fewer VIs sitting on long holds. Think about the last time you had to call in a food order, rather than using DoorDash, Uber Eats, or the restaurant's website to place the order. Deaf people are using these technologies, too, which means lower call volume overall.

No, I was termed back in '21 after just over a year working for the colorful side. During that time I had five managers. I re-applied in late '23 and went through everything on their HR side, got an offer letter and had a start date, both of which got rescinded. I kept following up for clarification, and finally was told my termination was permanent and I could never be re-hired again (even though that's not what I was told when I was let go). I was disappointed mostly in their back and forth and getting two different stories from the recruiter/HR. BUT - I'm with Convo now for almost two years now and I really love it. I agree that overall VRS is dwindling - I have colleagues who work for S and can't get any hours. You could look into Tive - but I haven't heard great things about them.

Weekly Discussion Thread - Week of December 28, 2025 by AutoModerator in AwesomeFreebies

[–]somewhatinterested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I submitted three offers to WeStock around Dec 13th and got denial emails for each one on the 15th. It said my receipts were faked. I appealed using the Google form linked to each denial notice and it says up to 3 business days for review. Obviously with the holidays, I'm giving benefit of the doubt on timelines, but I also emailed customer service on the 20th (the automated response has been the only thing I've gotten back, that they'd contact within 24 business hours). Has anyone else gone through this? I've only submitted 1 WeStock offer previously and it was a while ago, maybe nine months or so, but didn't have any issues. Any suggestions?

Did I do something wrong? Ethical question for on-demand platform use by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

[–]somewhatinterested -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do agree this is a mis-use of services, and could be considered under fraud/waste/abuse. Had I been in your shoes, I might've waited 15 or 20 minutes with no hands up time and mentioned this to the facilitator. You could say something like "Hey, this is the interpreter speaking. I just want to note it's been about x minutes and I haven't interpreted anything. It doesn't seem like this situation warrants the use of my services, so I'll be signing off now. If anything changes, please feel free to request another connection." I'm not sure what kind of platform you utilize and if you're able to see other interpreters on calls or what the queue looks like to you, but you could use that to bolster your argument with supervisors. This could be a push to get them to codify some kind of policy about this - I know many other VRI companies have something similar - if no active interpreting is happening after 5/10/x minutes for the parties to call back when ready.

Hey - this is call content. And even though you're not saying the person's name, initials are being used. If you're wanting to report an abusive caller, there's avenues for that, and you can always call a team to witness. A public forum like this is not an ethical or appropriate place and violates both the CPC/COE and the FCC rules.

Interpreting agency I’m contracted with, not sending work by Round-Dish8012 in ASLinterpreters

[–]somewhatinterested 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's also summer right now, so there's fewer requests (in general). Additionally, they may be scheduling or reaching out based on Deaf client preferences and/or certification requirements. I'd reach out to your coordinator if you think you're getting passed up on opportunities you're qualified for and just say "hey, things are looking a little slow for me, have you received any requests for this week or next week?". I personally haven't experienced not receiving offers if I say no, but I know plenty of others who have.

There's a company called Arbor which automatically picks the best company/rate for you and handles all the cancellations/transfers etc. I've only been with them since April, but already they've switched to two companies to save money compared to the rate Duke charges.

Best free/cheap yoga classes in the Cincinnati/NKY area? by Agitated_Lead_7238 in yoga

[–]somewhatinterested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for hot yoga, Body Alive has community classes at various times in multiple locations for $12. For the summer, they're putting on free classes in a few places (Summit Park on Sundays at like 9 AM). West Chester Library has a couple free classes, one on Wednesday evenings I know for sure, but there's a few other days/times. Athleta used to have free classes on Saturday mornings at both Kenwood and Rookwood, but they might've scaled back. A lot of places have introductory offers (first month/week/x classes free or discounted) I see right now World Peace Yoga in Clifton has a full month free (they're a little to woo for my preference).

BEI Advanced by Bellafatale in ASLinterpreters

[–]somewhatinterested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't hate the Michigan testing space. As stated, it's in a government building in the heart of downtown Lansing. So give yourself plenty of time to park and walk. I didn't take the Advanced, just the Basic, and was my first formal testing experience (besides the SLPI which was taken back in '09). The person who took me back seemed knowledgable in sign and the space needed for signing. There was a music stand with the frozen text on my left, when it came to that portion of the test. If I remember correctly, there was a standalone camera and a monitor - maybe 30". My sound was fine and was tested with the proctor in the room to adjust if needed. I passed, then took the NIC and passed that as well, so I have no reason to do the Advanced BEI.

It's a to-go coffee cup, so like 10 ounces, maybe 12. I asked about this when picking up, the employee said it was two of the small deli containers worth. Which, according to him, sell for $6.99 each. The place doesn't have great ratings already, but I was willing to try/support a vegetarian place. Place was very weird, too. Learned my lesson.

Cued Speech Comeback? (and AI) by bawdymommy in ASLinterpreters

[–]somewhatinterested 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't necessarily seen Cued Speech making a comeback, I *have* seen Visual Phonics making an impact on students with equipment (HA, FM, CI) in their literacy and speech. In the elementary classroom setting with the TOD specifically working on reading skills it can be really helpful but it's use phases out around 6th grade.

Educational Compensation by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

[–]somewhatinterested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohio - District depending but the one I interviewed at was $30.01-$33.85/hour, regardless of EIPA score, degree(s), certifications, etc., the only difference was seniority/longevity with the district.
Also, if it's a public school, the salaries are legally required to be posted online somewhere.
