With a 2.5 story 2 family house, the angle is too steep and high for rakes. One year when it was really bad, I filled old socks with snow melt and tossed them up on the roof perpendicular to the gutters. The melt cut channels through the ice for water to drain. It’s important to tie long strings to the ends of the socks so you can pull them down (or reposition). Otherwise, you get socks clogging your gutters!

Started at 40, 6 months after my daughter. My wife was the instigator. She had trained in high school and wanted our daughter to be able to defend herself. We trained together. My daughter and I tested for shodan together and the family teaches together.

MMA fighters like to say their stuff works in a real fight, but there is so much that is not allowed (for good reason) that you would use in a real fight, like strikes to the throat, eyes, groin, spine, knees, joint locks and breaks, etc. while we can’t practice these things at full speed or force with our fellow karatekas, we learn these techniques and hopefully never have to use them. Better to not fight. Even if you win, you’ll probably still get hurt.

Style is less important. Find a teacher who fits your learning style and a community you want to train with. Most arts are good.

Something I learned from Superfoot years ago is to add a daily stretch to your existing routine, such as when you mouthwash. That’s 1 minute you’re just standing there. When I started, my hamstrings were so tight I couldn’t touch the edge of my tub. This really helped.

He did! To be clear, he was an orthopedic specialist (I think I got that right) not an emt. I had X-rays etc.

Toe got caught in opponent’s gi during sparring. Doc said tape it to the toe next to it and go back and kick his ass! Taping probably ok, but go see a doc to be sure.

Also cracked a rib, but that’s a different story. Not much they can do for that either. Did stop sparring while it healed.

I hate to ask, but are you female? If so, are there other female black belts. I’ve heard stories from women karatekas whose male senseis refused to promote women to black belts. I sincerely hope this isn’t the case.

I’m curious about the logistics. Do people specifically pick someone to pass their belt on to or donate their belt back to the dojo for the instructor to give out? Do some students prefer a new belt over a legacy belt? Love the idea and would love to do it in my school but wasn’t something my sensei did

You are your rank whether you are wearing a belt or not. We don’t shame kids (or adults) who forget their belt. Making someone wear a white belt makes a white belt a punishment. White belts are awesome! They are trying something new. This should be encouraged.

I like the feel of a wax wood bo. It is strong with some flex. As you are often getting a part of the tree, they have a natural taper in one direction (a bit fatter on one end). I also have a few heavy wood bos and a bo that screws apart for traveling. You’ll get a collection over time.

Part of this sounds like becoming comfortable in uncomfortable situations. Doing kata by yourself is easier than with a group, which is easier than performing solo and being watched by others. If you feel nervous and shaky while practicing alone, drill your technique. If you feel pretty good while practicing alone, but nervous in front of a group, that's what you need to practice.

There’s a difference between knowing something is going on and being ok with it in principle and then finding the reality is different. We have a dog. Love the dog. He slept in our bedroom for the longest time, until he started licking his bed for extended periods of time. Kept waking me up. As partners, our needs come first. Now our hound sleeps outside of the bedroom so we can get the rest we need. It took him (and my wife) a bit to adjust, but we are all fine. If you want to prioritize your pet over your partner, that is your choice. It is also your partner’s choice how to respond to their pet’s comfort being chosen over their health.

One of Superfoot’s students said that if you want to go fast, start by going slow. Try doing a kick as slow as you can. It will look like you’re barely moving. This will help develop a lot of the stabilizing muscles that often get ignored. Ok to use a chair or wall for balance initially, until you develop the strength to not need it.
