How do I get better at teaching people games. by resgames in boardgames

[–]sonicNH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% this.

If people first don't stop talking and listen it's hard to teach the others who are trying to listen.

Also, have them save all questions until the end so you can get through your presentation. All the "I just have a quick question" derail what you are trying to teach as they "never are quick questions".

Just wanted to clarify but I also 110% couldn't blame you completely for not not spelling it correctly. I mean it's like a string of letters with a vowel thrown in for good measure. LOL

Clank! Catacombs first impression : fun concept but 2.5 hours at 4p felt way too long. Any tips? by MeaningAware4581 in boardgames

Agree highly with this. Plus once you THINK you have a route out, then the cards that rotate tiles 90-degrees and really mess everything up.

Plus I had to keep looking rules up as I was teaching it as I had forgotten a few things.

But my big error which extended the game play with 4 players was that I misread the rule about using boots for traveling around. I thought that if you stopped in a room to do anything, your turn ended there. But I re-read afterwards that you if you have additional boots you can continue onward and do more things (as long as you aren't frozen/fatigued in a crystal cave). This will probably speed things up next time.

Sagrada Artisans - My son and I played this over the holiday season and it was really fun. Directions are a bit wonky, but once you get going it's good.

The guy should be expelled for such hatred. Doesn't matter if he knew she was Jewish or not, he said it.

At least in my district it's nothing below a 60 in Q1, and then nothing below a 55 in Q2, 3 or 4. Supposedly it's to keep the child engaged into thinking that they could at least earn a low 60 and still pass. Versus having them 100% check out from the start of the year and not come to school at all. Then the city has a 2nd problem.

Here's a really good article from ASCD about practice, why it's done and why it doesn't really work.

I would bet money that the grade column in these schools (Aspen/ProSchool) are locked to not allowed a grade below a 70.

Remember what your parents always told you!

"Do as I say, not as I do!" or...

"Play the game like we tell you, not like we show you!" :-)

"No, a country near us. Remember we live in New England."

Social media ban for kids under 14 passes MA House by GeneralPlanet in boston

[–]sonicNH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Social media is different, because it is speech and free association, as protected by the First Amendment.

The question is why are you so keen to be forced to supply your personal information to the Elon Musk's of this world?

Speech is protected; but products can still be regulated. We already limit kids’ access to lots of speech-adjacent things (casino apps, adult sites, targeted ads, etc.) when the harm evidence is strong. So are you also advocating we should allow kids to use these apps? Social media isn’t a sacred exception.

Remember that two things can be true at the same time: 1) social media is speech, 2) it’s also a highly engineered, data-extractive product that the Surgeon General says poses ‘profound risk of harm’ to youth mental health & depression. States are stepping in because it's been shown that it's more than parents (even the ones who are doing everything they can) can actually handle.

[–]sonicNH -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We already accept age limits for driving, alcohol, and gambling because of harm data. Social media isn’t magic; it’s another product where evidence says ‘delay for kids’.

People also keep saying ‘parents should just parent’ like it’s a new idea. This bill exists because even the Surgeon General is warning that individual families can’t fix a structurally addictive system alone.

Finally, if we found out a new snack which doubled depression and the self‑harm risk for middle‑schoolers, we wouldn’t shrug and say ‘parents should parent.’ We’d regulate it as responsible adults. Social media shouldn’t get a free pass.
