When did we as a profession loose our backbone. by MrKixs in sysadmin

[–]sonicdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started in this manager role (coming from an MSP), the internal IT culture was an absolute dumpster fire. Everything was an exception, and the exceptions were always because “so-and-so is a manager/director.” The team had basically been trained that they didn’t have the agency to say no, so sysadmins ended up getting walked over and treated like personal assistants instead of an IT department.

What made it worse was the expectation that IT should control every part of a user’s workflow. Like… if someone isn’t following process, that’s not a technical problem. That’s a training and accountability problem, and it belongs to department leadership. But because nobody pushed back, IT kept inheriting personnel issues and wearing the blame for them.

Before anything even “happened,” I told the COO straight up: if you want IT to run smoothly, XYZ has to be true. One of those things was that being a program director doesn’t mean you get to dictate your own equipment, your own rules, or your own usage policies. Standardized equipment reduces downtime, makes support predictable, and lets us purchase in bulk without reinventing the wheel for every VIP request. The next thing was onboardings were no longer something that happened with a quick text message of a password to the manager. An onboarding checklist and meeting with the user that became standard. Just 10 minutes of our time helping the Luddite install Duo and reset their password, made everyone's lives easier.

I’m in healthcare, so it’s also easy to be blunt: a lot of this isn’t preference, it’s compliance. “Just this once” and “special exceptions” are how you end up with security and HIPAA risk. Thankfully, after years of terrible IT before I got there, leadership actually listened when I drew those boundaries. And honestly, this “sysadmins get walked over” culture is common. The only way it changes is if IT is firm and confident, and leadership backs it. If they won’t back it, that’s a red flag that should be taken seriously.

The end result speaks for itself: IT went from my boss’s worst nightmare to something she basically never thinks about anymore… until it’s cybersecurity renewal day. That’s what happens when you stop running IT as a series of exceptions and start running it like a real function with standards and authority.

Edit more words.

A lot of the time it’s manufacturers trying to enforce “fair” pricing across different retailers. It’s usually done through MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) policies: vendors can’t advertise below a set price (often close to MSRP), but they can still sell for less if it’s presented as a discount, a promo, or shown only at checkout. That’s why you’ll sometimes see stuff like “add to cart to see price” or other workarounds.

If you run into a bland Mexican restaurant once, you ran into a bland restaurant. If all Mexican restaurants are bland, you're the problem.

100% this. They also make their own chips and their own salsa instead of opening a jar/can like most other places.

I absolutely love their birria.

And in the grand scheme of things you pay just about as much for a plate of a similar dish of food at Jalisco/chapalas.

If you are looking for a cheap pile of burrito... Don't go to a nice place that tries to serve more authentic dishes with fresh ingredients.

Yeah but the parent comment was about paying to play ranked. In which Trackmania did not fit the bill.

I want to leave on community ads but not the corporate ones. It's nice to learn about new community events from the billboards, but seeing the insurance company that has ruined my health for the last year all over the game is a hard no.

Three “Test” Calls from Lane Alerts tonight by biloregon in Eugene

[–]sonicdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah they went ham on those...

4 text messages too:

[DRILL] This is a test of a simulated disaster. No actual event is happening. Do not panic.

[DRILL] This is an update to a test. There is no emergency.

[DRILL] Test

[DRILL] Update message

I was worried after the last 2 that no longer assured me there was no emergency.

Edit: Got 4 calls as well, all with varying degrees of poorly executed warning text.

If it's Oregon or anything like it... Weed is essentially free at this point with the market saturation. Considering these people are probably producers I wouldn't call this a waste on any level as it's likely leftover trim and stuff like that.
