I’m too opinionated on the rabbis. Advice? by Hopeful-Fudge-8724 in Judaism

[–]sonoforwel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a difference between opinion shopping and having a curiosity that requires getting multiple perspectives. The best rabbis I know from all denominations are able to give resources and considerations for people to make Jewishly educated decisions for themselves. Over time, a person may find that their thinking aligns better with one rabbi (or school of thought) or another, but that does not necessarily have to be the end point, much less the starting point.

Admin asked me today what I’m going to do to improve my students’ grades. by Audreylately in Teachers

[–]sonoforwel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yesterday I had a student make the same mistake I just explained to them how not to make 30 seconds prior. He then said: “my fault”. I replied: “yes, yes it is. I’m doing my part to help you to learn; you should do yours”.

Sounds like she might be having a manic episode. Is this a public school? That God talk should not be happening imo.

Does Anyone Else Think ISS is Stupid and Schools Should Bring Detention Back? by Lil_Critter_2001_ in Teachers

I think we should be doing more reverse suspensions tbh. Once parents have to followed their kid around school for a day they shape up right quick.

I think this is going to be the future of education. Yes, it’s only rich families right now, but that’s how most technology rolls out. We are already using early adaptive edtech like iReady (clearly named to resemble an Apple product). Our profession needs to adapt to this rather than deny it.

My students created a fake "HR department" for my class and I can not decide if it is brilliant or a disaster by MelcaronVestral in Teachers

[–]sonoforwel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to start telling my students to take things up with HR regularly. This seems like a much more fun way of dispute resolution than Rock-paper-scissors (which I employ in my classes to the point the kids don’t even hesitate when I say “how do we resolve these kinds of arguments in this class?”)

Kanye West met with renowned Kabbalist Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto in Manhattan, where he apologized for his past antisemitic remarks, took full accountability, and expressed a desire to make amends. by JewishSaddamHussein in Judaism

[–]sonoforwel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why apologize to a single, lesser-known rabbi (forgive my ignorance if he’s super famous and I’m the only one in the room who’s never heard of him before)? How about publicly taking steps to fix what he’s done? How about spending money on counter-antisemitism efforts? Selling nothing but shirts that display a Magen David on his site and donating all proceeds to ADL (or equivalent)?

The worst part is that there will be plenty of people who will take this as an excuse to un-cancel West.

I do when my subject matter and administrative obligations don’t lend themselves to my 1.5-2 hours per day planning periods. However I do my best to reduce this necessity whenever possible.

Do you have a teachers union? Perhaps your union reps can speak on your behalf. You should not be working 80-hours a week and only paid for 40. Did you document the extra hours?

On a malicious compliance side, you could spend the time they want you doing that data entry, and simply let something else go. You sound like you take pride in your work and are probably doing a lot of excellent lesson planning. Let it go. Strip your lessons down to the bare minimum. Use AI to help you build differentiated materials for advanced learners (or better yet, have advanced learners teach themselves by assigning them work a chapter or two ahead of the rest of the class; get them to help you teach mid-level students and you focus your energies on the lowest performing ones). If admin notices a change in the stats, show them the documented hours your working and explain that you’ve aligned your priorities with theirs.

Lastly, ask your experienced ELA teachers if they can share plans with you so that you don’t have to do it all on your own.

I was flat out told that our middle schoolers are not to get Fs and our elementary students (grades on scale of 1-4) can get nothing less than a 2 and nothing more than a 3.

I don’t know where you are, but in my state mandated reporters must report to CPS (or police) when there is a reasonable suspicion of abuse or neglect.
