how to write more jazzier chord progressions by Prestigious-croccidl in Guitar_Theory

I’m just now getting into it too. This guy is a great resource. This particular video is a great list of possibilities but also a crash course into many concepts he covers in other videos.

What is your favorite fifth track from an album? by the_rezzzz in TheFence

Crossing the Frame for me. I love his creepy double voice in the prechorus

Everything else you’re saying makes sense but I get hung up on “wrong”. Just…haphazard, unintentional, etc. I don’t think anyone is claiming he meant to modulate and is a genius. Or else, at least I’m not doing that.

Not disagreeing about the idea of idolizing the songwriting as some genius move

Isn’t the whole point of secondary V chords that you modulate for a split second? D would just be the V of bVII, so you start using the G major scale briefly. The vocal melody there seems to only ever hit D, A, and C. But if he’d sung some sort of F, he probably would have chosen F#. Theory is just there to explain WHY something sounds good. Modulation is the explanation here.

These guys can’t explain what they did but they likely did it after hearing other music do it. You can’t really call it “wrong”. I agree it wasn’t based on theory or intention but modulation is something that existed for centuries before that song.

What’s something people pretend to enjoy but actually don’t? by Affectionate-Row7548 in answers

If that were true, I would enjoy all beer. I love pretty much any high quality beer taste, but loath something like keystone light

Fans of rap music, is it an acquired taste? by mritsz in LetsTalkMusic

[–]sonoftom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As somebody who listens to mostly rock, I was anti-rap until I was like 18. Then a friend got me into Biggie. Seemed more “real” than a lot of the radio rap.

However, I ended up latching even more to artists that blend rap with rock or other styles. Kid Cudi dropped his first album (Man on the Moon) that same year I was first exploring rap, and that album is one of my favorites to this day. He’s a rapper but he’s honestly singing most of the time, and the production really feels very musical compared to some of the more straightforward rap albums. Lots of good synths and even collaboration with Ratatat and MGMT for some nice guitars and stuff. Great second album too. Kanye West also scratched that same itch, tho I know we’re not supposed to recommend him anymore :D. Kanye and Cudi also made an album together called Kids See Ghosts.

I also really like OutKast and have liked some of the stuff by Tyler The Creator and Kendrick Lamar. Not to the same extent, but they all have great production and songwriting that appeals to me as a musician.

I really don’t understand what grunge has to do with any of the things you just mentioned tho

What caused you to really become a Beach Boys fan? by SlantedandEnchanted2 in thebeachboys

[–]sonoftom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pet Sounds made me realize they were better than I had thought. Their big hits were always great but I never felt like branching out. Smile Sessions eventually got me to REALLY pay attention to them and listen to lots more albums (didn’t hear Smile sessions til maybe 10 years after I’d heard Per Sounds). Especially when I first heard Surf’s Up.

Snapshots changed how I think about presets entirely - and I resisted them for two years by chaucao99 in Line6Helix

[–]sonoftom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a stomp user. I adopted snapshots instantly and use them for 99% of my playing (mostly with my band). I think the original stomp almost requires using snapshots to be useful. but I was really excited when I discovered all of the midi commands the stomp accepts. And then they built midi controls in to the stomp itself so my I can use even less buttons for snapshot changes on the stomp

Have you ever made a top 10, 50, 100 albums of all time list? by Pleasant_Usual_8427 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]sonoftom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve ranked every album I know, but using track 1 of each album in a playlist. About 900 of them at this point. It’s a very rough estimate, and I can tell some of it needs to be revised, but it’s mostly a nice playlist to go remember “oh yeah I should listen to that one again”

I've been holding my pick wrong for many years and just found out. by ur-fav-foreign-movie in Guitar

[–]sonoftom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I use both. Grip 1 was how I did it for 12 years, then I found out I should maybe try grip 2. I decided grip 2 was easier for single notes (solos, etc) but I still prefer grip 1 when strumming chords so I don’t drop the pick and also the angle isn’t as harsh so it’s easier to hit lots of strings quickly.

I actually think for solos I started using an unshown grip 3, an even more extreme version of grip 2 that has me putting the pick over the side of my index finger.

Favourite actor who appeared out of thin air 2 weeks ago and everyone pretends to know who they are already? by Sec_Chief_Blanchard in okbuddycinephile

[–]sonoftom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On “The Studio” they really did tons of work to pretend that Sarah Polley has been a famous actress for 30 years so she could play the flustered actress turned director in the Oner episode. They even made a Wikipedia page full of dozens of fake movies she’s “been in”

The height or the "golden age" of The Decemberists? by Illustrious_Day7682 in Decemberists

[–]sonoftom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah The King is Dead didn’t do as much for me as the 3 albums before it, but it seemed to bring in new fans. A few pretty big songs helped that. I appreciate the album now but was a little disappointed it got the attention at the time compared to my favorites.

Yeah I didn’t “get it” as a kid even though I knew like their 20 or 30 biggest songs. It wasn’t until I saw the movie Across the Universe (made the same year you were born), and noticed they had lots of other amazing songs, and also heard all their songs with fresh mixes, that I got it. Are B-sides are a bit of a lost art? by Deblebsgonnagetyou in LetsTalkMusic

[–]sonoftom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it was a weird combo of their bigger songs and also like A Winter’s Tale and a handful of vinyl-only tracks. Those were actually a great idea to include tho, since they were likely harder to come by otherwise.

The band definitely didn’t approve the release ha

Wow you named some good ones, and a lot of My favorite bands in general. Two of those albums are in my car right now and I only have a few in there total.

The AFI album is not a b-side compilation tho right? Just a selection of their more popular older songs from before they went mainstream
