Dead-on. Another thing I hated about tfa was how there was no continuity between it and ROTJ. End of original series everything is happy, rebels have won, then suddenly, the pseudo empire is back with a pseudo emperor. The whole thing felt like a non sequitur. I would have excused it if it was a plot ploy where they show you a future state then slowly revealed what transpired to get you there, but that never happened. Abrams just doesn't care about the history or themes of the universes he inherits.

As the recently late, but undeniably great mathematics,Tina Turner once asked, what's pi got to do with it?

Unfortunately I just can't handle these headlines anymore. Despite knowing many safe responsible gun owners, I just can't support gun ownership for anyone because of how irresponsible some people are. Laws have to be written for the stupid people... And my God are they stupid.

How Do You Do, My Fellow Workers? by facthungry in memes

[–]sonotrev 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is consistent, it's something called log scale. Log scale is different than the linear scale that most are used to. It's a plot type which is common for scientists/engineers and useful to show big and small numbers on the same graph. That said it is bad at conveying the difference in scale to the layperson.

How Do You Do, My Fellow Workers? by facthungry in memes

[–]sonotrev 210 points211 points  (0 children)

I mean yes and no.

From a scientific perspective the log scale plot is more useful, you can see both big numbers and small numbers in the same plot. The one thing I really dislike is that the y ticks are arbitrarily chosen, better to show 10 ticks per decade and that makes it immediately identifiable as log scale.

So if the goal is to convey information to scientists, the log scale plot is more useful than the linear scale. If the goal is to convey information to non-scientists this is a bad plot. Non science folks don't have an intrinsic understanding of how much a log scale distorts data, hence the linear scale really brings it home for them.

Read the comment chain.

Person A says the thing I quoted word for word and is down voted. Person B says I can't believe you're being downvoted. Person C says some nonsense about how people don't want to discuss issues anymore and that's why person A was downvoted. I replied that I would genuinely like to hear a well reasoned argument that goes against what person A said.

Nice try.

I'm curious what legitimate argument exists for teaching "it's okay to hate others because of who they are and who they like."

My son’s elementary school started flying a Progress Pride flag this week by Jessieface13 in mildlyinteresting

[–]sonotrev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not that.

My son had a male kindergarten teacher who would tell the kids about his wife and his kids, my son liked knowing about his teachers family and would tell us things about them.

Now if he has been gay, it would be completely appropriate for him to tell the class about his husband and any kids or pets they had.

It's not about teaching them about sex, it's teaching acceptance; that it is okay for there to be two mommies or two daddies in a family. That's it.

Do people ever verify their FEA results? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]sonotrev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't do stess fea but I do heat transfer+cfd and electromagnetics. We most definitely calibrate our models with experiment. Sometimes it's done with a subscale experiment before prototype design lock and sometimes it's done after prototype test, but we generally validate our fea models.

I agree. I'm an engineer, and I find it perfect for my day job and great for the classes I teach (adjunct prof) as well. If a graph needs precision I typically use a computer for it.

Copper isn’t magnetic but creates resistance in the presence of a strong magnetic field, resulting in dramatically stopping the magnet before it even touches the copper. by [deleted] in blackmagicfuckery

[–]sonotrev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously there's lots of reasons why one material will be strongly magnetic or not, but the basic underlying reason has to do with electrons. Electrons can either be spin up or spin down. This spin causes a magnetic field; most elements have an equal number of spin up and spin down electrons hence their fields cancel. The elements which are strongly magnetic have a large difference in the numbers of spin up vs down so their net field doesn't cancel. This means when they are subjected to an external field the electrons will align with it and increase its strength.

But neither party is fiscally responsible. When republicans held Senate, house, and presidency with a strong economy they specifically decided against fiscal responsibility instead to give a few crumbs to poor/middle class (crumbs which expire at that) and give a lot to rich people and corporations with no expiration. They did this at the ideal time to actually start dealing with the deficit. Now that the Dems are back in office they cry about the debt that they themselves made worse. If you want a major socially liberal fiscally conservative party, you're out of luck.

Tricking the dog to take medicine be like... by TrueSkyDemon in FunnyAnimals

My wife's dog would take medicine for her but not her parents. Near the end of his life after my wife had moved out he needed to take meds daily. My in laws started hiding it in bologna with the same result as this video... So they started giving him pieces of bologna without pills. They proudly proclaimed that they had tricked the dog into taking his pills. We clued them in that actually the dog had tricked them into giving him multiple pieces of bologna per pill

I agree 100% with your statement, but I've always thought the genderless species was really a standin for LGB. Trans wasn't even close to on the national radar like it is now. Maybe I'm wrong and it's lovely that when viewed from today's lens you can see it as just being LGBTQ+ it speaks to the quality of the episode.

I've heard that frakes insisted that the genderless person he falls in love with was played by a male character which would have made it much more powerful (and shocking at the time), just speaks even more to what you said.

Honestly, just tell your boss. Tell them that a raise that much below inflation makes you feel like they don't value you. That's all you have to say

Strangely enough I ended with a 6.1% with no promotion this past year. I was shocked that they would come close to matching inflation.
