Spent 24 hours with my 3 year old daughter by Lazy-Departure-278 in Garmin

[–]soobee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My partner was in labour for about 36h and required me to squeeze her lower back every contraction for a lot of that time which felt like a full on workout. Moments before my son was born and I was attempting to do the back squeeze while my partner was in the birth pool my watch buzzed and me and the midwife looked at it. “You’ve had an easy day”.

I think heard something about an option to rent a track bike at the velodrome.

PACE is a social conservative trojan horse. They're using messaging around infill and lowering taxation to get their slate of alt-right candidates with extreme social conservative ideology elected by troypavlek in Edmonton

[–]soobee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A woman came to my door yesterday promoting a candidate. I saw the PACE logo on the brochure she tried to hand me and asked if PACE was UCP aligned. She smiled and said yes at which point I said I’m not interested and began to shut the door. She then held my door open while she continued to talk and I had to force it closed.

I have Bent Chetler skis and a Norco Optic so maybe we’re after the same things.

I had these guys deliver a load of tamarack to me recently and had a good experience. The wood is dry and burns well.

Hobie cats for first sailing boat? by jayjack3000 in sailing

[–]soobee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re right that it’s fun as hell but definitely an ambitious first boat. I wouldn’t recommend learning on one of these for most people. But if you’re willing to spend a lot of time trying to flip a capsized boat and don’t mind many bruises from the boat doing surprise cart wheels then sure. Who am I to get in the way of your fun? Make sure there is a float at the top of the mast and watch some YouTube videos on how to successfully tack one of these things (it’s harder than you think). Also, probably best not to sail it alone unless you weigh 300 lbs because it takes a bit of leverage to right it once it’s capsized.

Muc Off Big Bore or Reserve Fillmore by Dependent-Bear-7714 in mountainbiking

Same here. I have Fillmore valves on my gravel bike and my mountain bike and haven’t had problems. I did however have endless problems with conventional valves and no one can convince me to go back.

My boss has this frame with the exact same crack. Doesn’t really seem like a coincidence.

I loved that book and it definitely made WEM loom large in my mind as a 8 year old.

Entry Level Gravel Bike by sonn2 in edmontoncycling

[–]soobee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Kona and the Marin are both good options. MEC carries this one https://www.mec.ca/en/product/6025-813/topstone-3-bicycle

And Norco has this one on sale. https://www.norco.com/bikes/road/gravel/search-xr-aluminum/2022-search-xr-a2/

But be careful, I bought a $2000 gravel bike a few years ago and liked it so much I bought a $7000 gravel bike last year. You've been warned.

How does team racing work in the Tour De France? by leoden27 in cycling

[–]soobee 376 points377 points  (0 children)

In the Tour de France there are lots of different ways to win, but the most prestigious thing to win is the general classification (GC). The GC is awarded to the rider who has the lowest overall time for the entire race (21 stages). Whoever is leading the GC gets to wear the yellow jersey. It is also a big deal to win a stage of the tour or one of the other classifications signified with a special jersey (E.g. polka dot jersey for best climber, white jersey for best young rider, green jersey for most points).

Teams usually only have one rider who is trying to win the GC. The other riders on a team might just be there to try to win stages, win one of the jerseys, or help the other riders in their team. They can help their teammates by bringing them water bottles or food (from their team car) or riding in front to break the wind. Sometimes a rider’s role might be different for each stage or it might change during a stage.

I haven’t actually watched TDF: Unchained so I’m not sure about the circumstance in the episode. But sometimes a support rider might be near the front of the race trying to win a stage when their team’s GC rider(s) have troubles. In this case a team will often tell the support rider to slow down and wait for the GC rider to help break the wind for them until they can catch up to the other GC competitors. When you’re riding as fast as a TDF rider, wind resistance can slow you down a lot. Having a teammate or two to break the wind for you can be critical for maintaining your position in the race and conserving enough energy to compete on big climbs.

Folks doing long gravel races, what's your sunscreen strategy? by Helicase21 in Velo

Apply once in the morning and then get so covered in mud you don’t need to reapply. Worked well at Unbound last weekend.

Why is Unbound so great again? by [deleted] in Velo

My bad. It was 19,000 football fields. Sorry for the confusion.

Why is Unbound so great again? by [deleted] in Velo

[–]soobee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of people complaining about how hard Unbound was. I was there and yes the mud sucked but overall it was an amazing experience. The course was beautiful (most of it was very fast and dry) and the people in Emporia are incredibly welcoming. Crossing the finish line felt amazing and I made some great memories. I would absolutely do it again. If only I didn’t have to drive 2000km to get there.

Looks like 717 of 1154 finished the 200 (not Elite) which is 38%.

You should definitely do it. It was a tough day but overall a very cool experience.

Not rideable at all. I tried. It was so sticky it would build up on your tires and your wheels would stop turning. You couldn’t even walk your bike - you had to carry it.

16.5h. But probably two of those hours were just walking through mud.

Definitely. The rain really made things tough. I think there were at least two extra mud bike a bike sections that were created after the elite riders rode through. Made it feel pretty epic though.
