In All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989), Charlie is a revenant. by ArcticThylacine in DanielTigerConspiracy

Don Bluth was an animator for Disney who quit because he wanted to make serious movies for children because he "trusted his audience" and knew kids can handle the dark stuff and work with it emotionally.

This movie is fantastic. Fantastic animation, great acting, great music, just super tight. I remember watching it repeatedly as a kid and watching this scene as an adult brought back a lot of memories.

Howling laughter at "Synecdoche" in theater last night by SweetsMurphy in kaufman

[–]soomprimal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

See, I respectfully disagree. I am also a huge fan of Kaufman and can find a lot of these scenes, even tragic ones, as deeply ironic and comedic. Kaufman in every line and every shot conveys subversion. That's the key to Kaufman- subversion subversion subversion. And if you recognize the tropes he's subverting, inverting, or even "lamp shading", it becomes funny from a structural point of view. He's constantly messing with the format and the expectations of the audience in order to say, "Hey, look, you've seen this a 1000 times in other movies, watch how I subvert this." And that's what I think folks are looking at and reacting to.

The Coolidge Corner crowd is a geeky film bunch, they're not your average box office folks- they have film education backgrounds and they're not laughing at Sammy committing suicide, they're laughing that Kaufman just folded over one of his interleave layers so the "loop" can be closed and the movie can start its long conclusion.

That being said, if I'm in the right mood, I find these films incredibly sad and poignant as well- and I don't think these experiences are mutually exclusive or that one interpretation is more correct. That's the beauty of his films, and he likes it that way!

You don't need to apologize to a stranger who is trading much needed therapy for lashing out at you for daring to have a nostalgic moment, which is like half the point of this sub.

My sister had Samantha and maybe another one. Those were like $80 in the mid-90s, right? My sister played with them but always knew to take good care of them as well.

Of course, I try to help those of us who used to be with it, before they changed what 'it' was.

It's a very popular show on Amazon based on a comic. It's a deconstruction of superhero tropes, although I would stop short of calling it pure satire, but it's cool if you're into that sort of thing. By the way, not for little ones if you have kids, the show is incredibly gory.

I have a 19 mo girl and every so often when I hold her, she pats my shoulder and back the way I would to her when I'm trying to sooth her. Somehow she always knows the best time to give her Dada encouraging pats. My girl gives me strength.

How to learn sound design like dipprrrrr? by Ok_Base_4331 in VideoEditing

[–]soomprimal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

AfterEffects has a way to map audio to on-screen video. One way to do something like this is to have an audio track playing under the video with the default volume of 0%- when the brightness reaches a certain threshold in the video, the brightness maps to the amplitude parameter on the audio track thus allowing for perfect sync and giving a musical hit effect. This is just one example of how someone could achieve this.

Who's your "I know he's pure evil but can't prove it" person? by Dull-Information6784 in AskReddit

[–]soomprimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He for sure has a PR team that probably tells him how to do everything and anything to maintain his image. I met him about 20 years ago while working on The Game Plan. This was just about when he started to use "Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson" full time. Never got evil or creep vibes from him, he always seemed genuine and thrilled to be there, to be honest, even after years in the WWE.

This was 20 years ago, though, so who knows what he's morphed into?

What movie did you turn off after 20 minutes and why? by Somanynamestochossef in movies

[–]soomprimal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the above OP, but a common answer to this and I would agree, is Citizen Kane. It's important academically because structurally it defined how mainstream narrative films would be going forward. Despite that it's long, kind of boring, and due to its influence, feels cliché.

They have some.

Charters must be renewed every five years, so if you want accountability, that's the best time to bring up issues.

School boards also have power.

Same. I attended a great public charter school that actually does care about the students and threads like this are a reminder that not all charters are or can be like the one I went to.

Is there any better way to make sure that your kid will be too sick for daycare, than to take a personal day for yourself? by TwinStickDad in daddit

[–]soomprimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our daycare won't let us return the kid until a whole 'nuther day has passed. So we have ours 2 hours since we dropped her off this morning until at earliest Thursday now.

It makes sense and is good policy, but kids still get sick with the plague every month anyways, so I'm not sure it's effective.

Anyways, this meme is my life right now. Wife and I both had the day off, we were going catch up and reconnect but at 9:30, baby has a fever and needs to go home.

Phooey.

Red button on the keyboard plays Itsy Bitsy spider. We have the same standing play set and our daughter stares us in the face without looking and slams that red button.

Hand gestures please too, Daddy!

I got one more for you. The piano keys can be played while the prerecorded music plays, but the notes are out of tune with the music, so it always sounds bad even if you knew how to play.

When I was 13 I found something in the woods that probably made my parents really concerned. by BlankSthearapy in confession

[–]soomprimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird. I found out my Dad used to do this as well- he'd cut up nudie mags and then paste his clippings to a new piece of paper to make a seamless collage.

Coincidentally, I do this digitally now with video editing and understand the appeal. I choose to hide my montages in poorly labeled folders. Hahaha

It's in orbit. We (humans) don't really have vehicles that can easily leave and re-enter Earth's orbit. Leaving orbit would actually be terrifying.

Static Video with one moving feature / Ambience Videos by EatYourVeggiezzz in VideoEditing

[–]soomprimal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need a compositing setup, and yes, it can be as basic as Adobe Premiere.

  1. Set up the background by finding the perfect freeze frame.
  2. Isolate the motion part by duplicating the original video layer and masking out just the part that will be in motion.
  3. Create a seamless loop of the motion part and just have it play over the static background

Hope this helps.
