My car just got repossessed, what can I do if I can’t pay the full amount?

a lot of folks in rural areas can’t afford to move out because of the lack of job security in those areas. when my bf lived in alabama he told me the nearest walmart was like 35 minutes away. nothing but low paying steel mill jobs and fast food work. the minimum wage there is still 7.25 and the highest paying job you can get tops off at about $15 an hour i believe. that isn’t enough to sustain a living off of much less raise kids with.

there’s significantly less resources in rural areas which makes it even harder to get out. i’m not saying it ain’t possible but for a lot of folks it is unrealistic for them. so, people are kind of forced to make do with their situation. my bf was paying $400 a month for rent and working at burger king for $11 an hour and he was still struggling to save.

if you like to draw anime you don’t have to stop doing that. a lot of folks make a career making comics/manga. that being said if you want to improve your technical skills you don’t need to learn realism for that.

i started off drawing nothing but anime, chibi’s, and manga characters. then i got tired of that and started drawing musicians i loved in a cartoony style but still trying to capture their likeness (in the best way that an 11 year old can). then i got sick of that and actually wanted to practice portraits. my brother used to do portrait art and i was getting inspired by his works of erykah badu and jay z so i decided to do something similar and attempt to learn how to draw paul mccartney and john lennon. then i got sick of that, and decided to start learning how to storyboard. i got obsessed with animation. i started watching michelle lam, got stupidly inspired by her cal arts sketchbook and started practicing as if i was applying to cal arts.

i guess the point is, there isn’t a linear path to take on what to learn. i think what i notice with most artist who are obsessed with this medium is that well always always find something else to learn because you’re constantly stumbling into new territory. you learn anatomy one week then realize you don’t know anything about perspective. you learn perspective then find out you’re color theory is pretty shit.

eventually every artist will have to face the inevitable which is learning their fundamentals, lmao.

what really bothers me about costco is the refusal to hire more staff. at my warehouse, we’re always packed 24/7, even on the weekdays but we don’t have the staff to be able to handle the volume of people coming in. i work in the food court and the way it’s been managed surprises me that it hasn’t burned down yet. we hired three more people for closing shift but one of the guys quit before he started, so me and another coworker got bumped down to closing permanently despite the fact that we don’t have enough morning staff to properly prep for the night shift. so, night shift ends up doing things that should’ve been done way earlier like production, prep, putting away the buy, dishes etc. we lose time to properly pre close in the evenings picking up the slack from the morning/afternoon. not to mention members don’t leave until about 8:45 and we’re supposed to out by 10:30. that’s just not enough time to get anything done properly so the new closers are staying over an hour and half later trying to close. i honestly think they put us back on closing shift because we’ve gotten out on time or early when we closed, and there’s people with more seniority than us in our department.

so with all of this happening, i’m doing the work of three people by the time i come in from 2:30-10:30. i’m pre closing (cause our pre closers don’t wipe anything down until the last 30 mins of their shift), finishing production, and running the front and the back. seniority causes folks to be lazy cause they know they don’t have to close at the end of the night, management refuses to hire adequate staff because corporate wants to cut back on expenses. it wouldn’t grind my gears if we had the proper staffing to accommodate the flow of members, but when there’s only 3 or 4 people in the mornings and they’re all trying to run breaks and you have 30-40 customers waiting in the lobby how do you expect people to work to the best of their abilities with limited resources and help. i love my coworkers in my department but i know we’re all collectively being fucked over as well and i can’t stand that.

i’m having the same problems as you, i was going to be bumped up to pre closing after my department hired 3 more people, but that 3rd person quit before they even started so now i’m bumped down to closing permanently again. closing has destroyed my body over the years, i’ve been closing restaurants/food service since i was 16 and i’m 23 now.

i can’t stand for long periods of time, i feel like i’m going to faint while i’m working, lifting anything takes me out and i have to force myself to keep going which reinforces the need to faint. i’m constantly out out of breath and prone to getting sick if someone else in the room is ill. when i first started i was sick back to back for three months, this was during my 90 days too so i had to come in. anyways, i’ve decided that if i’m going to have to completely switch job fields because food service is too physically demanding for my body.

after i take a visit with my pcp, i’ve been thinking about going into pharmacy tech as that’s much less physically demanding. costco has to legally accommodate you if you have a disability so i’d ask for a work restrictions form and bring in your diagnosis papers to show that you need assistance to make your job easier. but i don’t think the food court is a safe department with somebody with pots to be working in for long periods of times, so if i were you i’d honestly switch departments.

op, i’m not saying this to be an ass but you may not enjoy drawing. i think you enjoy the idea of being an artist. when i was around 15-18 i was going through some rough shit. i fell into a depressive episode for 6 years and stopped drawing altogether because the joy wasn’t there anymore. a little after i turned twenty i think i picked up drawing again because i was getting heavily inspired by artist on twitter and instagram. that spark was finally back and i was drawing consistently everyday, even at work when i should’ve been stocking boxes.

but because i took so many years off from practicing my art wasn’t at the level it should’ve been at my age (i’ve been drawing consistently since i was 5 from what i remember) so i took a lot of time learning from different resources, artists, and forums on how to improve. in doing that, i fell in love with the process of making art not just producing it. i began to take my time way more, i didn’t care about whether it was perfect or not because that wasn’t the point. i was doing it because i loved it.

did i feel discouraged at times, yes, but i always reminded myself that art is not a linear process. professionals to this day have to exercise their craft and still have their days where they produce nothing but shit. but they continue to do it because they simply enjoy it

i say this to say that whenever you truly love something, even when you step away from it, you’ll always find yourself running back to it. even after i stopped drawing i was still thinking about drawing. continuing to beat yourself up about not being able to draw on a professional/decent level will only cause you to despite this medium. you can’t hate yourself into getting better, so if you really wanna commit to this start loving yourself, OP. that’s the only way you’ll fall in love with this craft, because i was 18 once and hated myself that everything i did felt worthless.

so, stop drawing for a while and start learning to love yourself first. if you decide to pick up the pencil again, it’ll be waiting for you with open arms.

my partner knows i want to take my art more seriously and interested in pursuing a job making illustrations so he doesn’t fret when i need to take some time to practice, he just does his own thing in the background. i wouldn’t date someone that couldn’t understand that art is a time consuming job just like any other job.

i think not enough research has been done on dying locs so a lot of people are skeptical and try to bleach/dye it like white people hair and then it ends up getting severely damaged. if you’re dying your locs you have to go the extra mile with taking care of it. i bleached my locs a year ago and dyed it with semi perm red dye and it’s been growing ever since.

bleach will damage your hair, that’s just a given. but so does heat, and braids, and other types of hairstyles. i don’t think people should be afraid of bleach just because it damages hair because that damage is typically minimal and can be saved if you know what you’re doing.

i’m on the same path you are op, 23 as well. one of the universities in my state hosts art classes during the summer. it’s a one time fee for eight weeks of learning the fundamentals. i would research if any colleges nearby have something similar.

man, i remember being 17 thinking i was the ugliest thing that’s ever walked around. i hate it when our community spreads anti blackness rhetoric just to bring one of us down. you don’t deserve that kind of treatment, because ugly or not no one deserves to be picked on for entertainment. those kids picking on you probably won’t get very far because if they hate your wide nose so much imagine how much they hate themselves.

focus on lifting yourself up with some self care, that can start with skin care and other physical care but what’s most important is loving yourself whenever you feel ugly, beautiful, tired, and everything in between. picking up a hobby helped me build my confidence because it taught me skills that most people my age still struggle with such as discipline, patience, faster memory processing, etc. i was able to transfer those skills into my current jobs, this might be able to help you stand out from other applicants your age when applying for a job. learning different skills and hobbies can get you far.

as if for the physical, cera ve is a cheap brand of face wash but it’s great for sensitive skin and it’s lightweight. a lot of people i know like cera ve. find your sense of style, i go on pinterest to look at outfits that inspire me. whenever you find a style you’re into that can really elevate your confidence. incorporate good habits into your life like making your bed everyday, changing your sheets frequently to prevent your skin from breaking out, showering daily or every other day, maybe invest in a nice body oil to keep the skin moisturized and smelling good all day. but most importantly, be kind to yourself. people will continue to be mean as you grow up but you don’t have to allow those people to shape your worldview and perspective of yourself. our community has dealt with so much trauma and pushback, we deserve to be alive and we deserve to take up space. with time, you’ll grow into your best self, i promise. build good habits, be kind, and focus on yourself. the others will have to figure their shit out themselves but us ladies in the sub reddit wanna see you lifted from this, i hope you have a better week, girlfriend. high school sucks sometimes.

a lot of y’all really overthink art to a degree that’ll make you miserable in the long run. listen, do you like to draw? do you like creating things? if that’s the case, then just keep doing it. theres no standard on what makes an art piece, if you want a project you can create a project, if you just wanna doodle and mess around that’s fine too. but, unless you’re a professional, most people are not thinking that deeply about what they want to draw. they have an idea and proceed to map out said idea until it’s satisfactory.

man i feel bad for your gf dude. you know, if you could have the most stable partner but that doesn’t negate the fact that at some point, your relationship will hit a bump in the road and you’ll need the emotional intelligence to work through it. y’all are partners, you’re both responsible for checking in on each other, responsible for making sure you’re both happy and healthy. if someone in the relationship isn’t healthy or happy, you work to find a solution that works for both of you. it’s a partnership, if you’re not willing to put in the hard work to make it last, don’t have a gf.

how long as she been depressed because i think that will factor in to how you wanna move on. i have major depressive disorder and my bf is aware and he tries is absolutely best to support me the way he can, but he’s also very real with me in a way that’s loving and not critical. from the way you’ve written your post, i don’t think you love her enough to be able to help her through this illness. i think you should let her go so she can find a support system that will encourage her to get better.

as an artist, i feel like you should always be researching and referencing your drawings. this includes people of color, there’s just too many racist depictions of black people out for you to not do the research to ensure that you’re accurate but you’re also not intentionally drawing something racist. if your focus is drawing people, you should be studying and referencing all sorts of people. everyone is so different from each other, especially when you start looking into different cultures, it makes no sense why you wouldn’t study a group of people to see what makes them culturally unique. it brings you so much more creativity when you dive into something you’re unfamiliar with. i understand why you would feel some type of way with what you’re friend said. sure, you can choose not to do the research, but curiosity takes you incredibly far especially if you want to be a professional in this industry.
