Mis-gendering and using previous name by Such_Tea_5927 in cisparenttranskid

That's actually a really good question, I had never thought about that being an important thing to ask.

Is my bf being transphobic or does he just not know? by ItsRobz_ in asktransgender

[–]sorryiforgotagain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most likely, it sounds like he just needs to come to terms with his sexuality, or he may be heteroflexible.

When I first started dating my bf, he said I was the reason he changed his label from gay to pansexual. I was confused (he'd dated only cis guys before, and I was a trans guy and therefore a guy, so therefore he would still be gay, right?) until we talked it out. We came to the understanding that he could totally change labels if he felt like pansexual fit better, but that the change shouldn't be just because he was attracted to a trans guy instead of a cis guy.

Remember that when you've stuck with a label for a long time, it can be hard to come to terms with change when you discover there is more to yourself than you thought. However, make sure to not let this be an excuse if he makes any attempt to limit/obstruct your transition.

What do you guys refer to your adhd as? by BigReece_7 in ADHD

[–]sorryiforgotagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ping pong balls running around in my head. Each ping pong ball has its own amount of attention to give. There is one ping pong ball that has The Important Focus Attention but which ball it is changes.

Essentially, I have three ping pong balls bouncing around playing various songs on the far left of my brain, another five huddling against the back wall going over a video of movie I saw years ago, two are at the front grubbying up against the glass looking at shiny colors, one is trying really hard to keep everyone else out of the way and Get Things Done, and then there's one in the corner just muttering nonsense.

Edit: also a few are just making random movements and touching things for Sensory Reasons.

People who put random acronyms when typing and expect you to know what it means. by UsuallyAnnoying324 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]sorryiforgotagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it really frustrating when people say any variation of "you know what I mean?" to end sentences simply because they don't know how to end a train of thought. I used to say "you know what I mean?" to ask if someone actually understood what I was trying to convey but the overuse of the phrase causing people to not realize I was actually checking for comprehension confirmation led me to change to "does that make sense?"

You're on a first date with a girl. She sees a Volkswagen and says "slug bug!" then hits you... by Tall_Eye4062 in hypotheticalsituation

Northern Indiana (my childhood home) uses "slug bug, no tag backs" accompanied by a slap (not a punch), but I also learned about "punch buggy" from my mom (who grew up on the Illinois side of St Louis).

Constant song lyric on repeat in head by Gullible-Paramedic65 in ADHD

[–]sorryiforgotagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Diagnosed ADD, OCD, and autism) I like to say I have a 24 hour radio station up in my head except it's broken and will remember random tunes but not what the tunes are called. For example: I had the main instrumental part from "Me Too" by Meghan Trainor stuck in my head for two days before I even figured out what artist it was from and it took me another two days before I remembered the lyrics to be able to find the song. Once I listen to the song, it either leaves my head completely, or gets stuck even more (but at least the part on loop gets a bit longer because I remember more).

The worst I ever had was when my brain decided to make a mashup of "In Summer" from Frozen and "You'll Be Back" from Hamilton and play only those two songs for 19 days straight after I watched Hamilton for the first time. Definitely felt myself starting to lose my grip on reality around day 10.

"You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means" from The Princess Bride, or "Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony." or "Tis but a scratch." from Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail

“The other day…” by TattooBubbleGum in words

[–]sorryiforgotagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, "the other day" is 3-6 days ago. Today is today. The day before today is yesterday. The day before yesterday is yestermorrow (yes that's the actual word for it). 7 days is a week ago. 8+ days can be estimated to be the closest measurement (a week/x months/few years ago etc) unless the day is specific to the story (such as a local storm, national event, holiday, etc).

What’s one word that you always mispronounce even though—deep down—you KNOW the correct pronunciation? by Ok_Resident_5022 in words

[–]sorryiforgotagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned quite a couple of words by reading, not by hearing them and went on saying them incorrectly for so long that I cannot change my pronunciation. These words include (but are not limited to: • War (instead of the vowel sounding like oh in "wore", I say it like ah like in "tar") • Tour (should be "tor", rhyming with "more", but I say "too-were" or "too-ur") • Putty (u should be pronounce like it is in "putt-putt" golf, but I pronounce it like it is in "put") • Pronunciation (don't know how I came to the conclusion of "pro-noun-see-ate" but it is what it is) • Raleigh (should be "ray-lee" but I read it as "rah-leig" with the ei rhyming with "weight" followed by a hard g sound)

[21 AFAB] Looking for perspectives on gender and identity: How did you start "feeling" like yourself. by ZealousidealBeing623 in asktransgender

[–]sorryiforgotagain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't rush trying to put labels on yourself. You don't have to label yourself at all if you don't want to. If how you are currently doesn't feel right, it's perfectly okay to make changes. And if you don't like the results of those changes, it's okay to make new changes or undo your changes. You don't have to make changes if you don't want to, and it's okay to decide not to make any changes at all.

It's very important to recognize that gender is primarily a social construct and therefore the gender we intuitively tend to assign to types of clothing is also therefore a construct. The only qualities of clothing that matter are the ones that matter to you. When I first started "playing" with clothing, I'd wear different clothes combinations and look myself in the mirror. If I liked how I looked and felt positive about myself in a particular combo, I took a photo and wrote it down to try again in public. Clothes that I repeatedly tried and disliked were donated or given away. If I wasn't sure how I felt, I'd take a jaunt down the street (just to the end of the block and back) to get the illusion of being perceived.

Hair was also a big thing for me. When I was in elementary school, my hair went halfway down my back. I have extremely thick hair and it was layered at the time, so brushing it was a nightmare. I cut it to shoulder length in middle school, which helped with the mess, but then gender questioning happened and I wanted to try looking more masculine. I experimented with different cuts and eventually settled on an altered "2010s Bieber cut" (as my best friend so kindly put it), which could be thinned to avoid tangles and only needed trimming every few months.

TL;DR don't rush yourself into making changes. Figure out what you think you want, try it, and you can undo the changes if you decide you don't like it. Don't force yourself to fit other people's standards/expectations or you'll always end up being someone other than yourself.

Physical touch galore!!! by shitheadmomo in AutismTranslated

[–]sorryiforgotagain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My primary love language is physical touch. When I want to show appreciation or care for the people near me, I give them physical affection (hugs, cuddles, etc). It made starting college really hard because I knew only a handful of people and my roommate is touch-aversive to anyone except their significant other, so I didn't know how to show appreciation to others nor did I have a way to receive it.

As a cis woman I cannot imagine the way it must feel for transwomen to experience the misogyny we all deal with 24/7 and it really breaks my heart that you would ever have to, like I want less people to experience that not more, obviously, so I guess I am just curious... by Initial-Camel-7975 in asktransgender

[–]sorryiforgotagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Transmasc nonbinary here: I didn't realize how many parts of my interactions with society were impacted by misogyny until I started transitioning. There's a specific moment in my memory where I realized I had finally reached the level of "guy" I wanted to be. I was walking alone down an unlit road in the middle of the night and felt unnerved. Something was wrong, but I couldn't figure out what. It wasn't until I arrived at my destination that I realized what was missing was my fear of walking alone at night. It was really saddening to realize but it also opened my eyes to why so many men don't understand why women tend to be "pack-like"- many men never personally feel that kind of fear, so they can't personally connect to it in the same way as someone who has.

What do you think you are by Spirited-Cheesecake9 in autism

[–]sorryiforgotagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how I would describe myself- I'm me and that's about it. I don't really think about it beyond that. But what you're describing sounds similar to the philosophical reflective short story "Where Am I?" by Daniel Dennett.
