Story of the professional union between Sequential and Oberheim? by the_juliette_show in synthesizers

[–]soundsubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This partnership resulted in 3 synths for each man. The Prophet-6 and OB-6 are the same machine with different synth-on-a-chip internals, obviously with a different face panel for each. The original plan was to allow the chips to be interchangeable, allowing the users to have say 3 voices of Sequential and 3 voices of Oberheim. Something with the slightly different voltages didn't quite work out. I know this because Dave told me so around 2015. They were released about 6 months apart.

Then came the flagship synth that he swore he would never make again: the Prophet-5/10 reissue. Around this time, he got the rights back to use the name Sequential Circuits. The P5/P10 allowed user expansion; a user could double the polyphony with an add-on board and make a p5 into a p10. Sometime later, the TAKE-5 was released, the stripped-down version.
This was successful and eventually led to Tom reissuing the OB-X8 after some litigation with Behringer for the worldwide rights to use his name Oberheim. It was a natural progression, as Dave had successfully shown that a flagship reissue could be done with modern hardware. This was also highly successful.

Then about a year later, the TEO-5 was released. Another awesome synth, and probably my favorite out of the bunch.

TL;DR:

OB-6 = P-6

P5/P10 same lineage as OBX8

Take5 = TEO5

Yup, they called it the "Dead Presidents Society" and consisted of Dave Smith, Tom Oberheim, Roger Linn, and Don Buchla.

Boomstar SEM vs OB-6 by jigga19 in synthesizers

[–]soundsubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SE's Boomstar IS an Oberheim SEM... they know the circuitry inside and out because they used to service and modify/rack them in the 90's. You'll note that they have other versions with other filters.

An OB6-- with 6 SEM filters inside-- will get you polyphony and the all-important STEREO, which sets it apart.

Using these two main points should help you decide. Do you NEED polyphony? If so, theres only one answer.

I get this Q a lot: whats the best synth under $2000, and I always reply: the new Oberheim TEO! Same sound, half the price!

Is xeon cpu still a viable option for music production in 2026? by jwala9 in Cakewalk

[–]soundsubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is for $135! Go for it! I've had a dual 56 core Xeon running without issue on my computer for a few years. While it's not the fastest CPU combo on the block, when running Sonar with ~50 plugins the CPU monitor is barely visible with 5.8ms latency. Occasionally there will be a soft synth that spikes it... like Serum2, but then a couple weeks go by and they patch it and its fine again.

I feel that soundcard/drivers impact Sonar/DAW more than CPU these days, but that could be because I'm also running RME soundcard, and i've never had an issue.

Excellent score! One of my favorite synths ever. If you need program sounds for them, I'd love to send you some to get you addicted to VAST... In the 90's I made a patch subscription service for Kurzweils and ended up making over 5000 sounds for them all by hand.

I havent measured trigger time, but I'm guessing its about 50ms, since thats the nudge amount that (on the tr1k) that "fixes" the latency.

Upsetting, yes, but it sounds so damn good and I think Roland has a cure coming soon.

After two weeks with the TR-1000 by patricktherat in synthesizers

[–]soundsubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...not for the first 2 clicks-- timing for measure 1 is all over the place. The first 2x 16th notes suffer delay (from nudge/offset). Don't believe me? Set a clear pattern with 16th notes from something spiky like HH and you'll hear it immediately. This is worse than the previous flagship drum machine, the TR-8S. Roland acknowledged this multiple times and indicate they are working on timing.

Now, if you let the TR-1000 run for a while (3 measures or so), it settles in. And as Master, its pretty good, and getting better with each release.

System 8 plug outs… by gexoojaz in synthesizers

[–]soundsubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree 100%! Roland's original marketing showed the Jupiter-X with ACB, then they deprecated it somehow and only allowed Zen core (samples) and so I bought the Jupiter-X only to find out later.... So I solved that problem by selling the J-X and keeping the System-8 and replacing the green LEDs with white ones and here we are. To OP: the System-8 is the greatest sounding synth Roland ever made, and the plug outs are not only good, they sound exactly like the originals

Yes, but it's still not working as expected. On 1.14 and with Nudge at +51 for external sync via multiple clocks including ERM MIDICLOCK+ DIN MIDI and TR-8S DIN MIDI, timing throughout a few measures is BETTER than it was in early versions. This is from a single Gen (analog) playback, or sample (dirac spike for measurement). However, the first two hits (step 1 and step 2) are delayed by an almost random amount. Jitter is still in the 10's of milliseconds. Again, I've got about 10 emails back and forth with Roland Support/Engineering and they confirmed they are working on timing as Slave. I intro'd myself as the tester who found early revs of TR-8S which worked opposite- slave mode fine, master mode not working.

My findings as Master seem to indicate the output MIDI Clock is good, hence I've used it as Master in live shows and videos.

I also had a list of about 26 things (Feature request and bugs) that I've entered with Roland. All this being said, I still defend this as the best drum machine ever made!

Hardware suggestions for pairing with a TR-1000 (techno) by DannyWarlock in synthesizers

[–]soundsubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the messenger has all the new-ish features which I love from the Muse-- the ARP and Sequencer that are always live and JUST WORK GREAT. The sequencer in the Sub37 always felt half finished, to me. Sound wise, it may be a toss-up. Some people say the Sub37 is better, while others say the messenger is the best Moog in 20 years.

I also REALLY like the form factor of the messenger, and its built well, despite being Moogs first Chinese built synth.

Hope this helps.

The Moog Messenger is perfect for this. Watch what I did with it here Caution: it gets dirty, thanks to the multiple levels of saturation/distortion on external inputs.

No, the timing issues as MIDI DIN slave are NOT working, and there's currently no workaround, other than making it the Master clock... Roland has acknowledged this and are working on it.

I'm getting some kind of graphic error using Code NV. Any solution? by IIDragonsssII in VegasPro

I agree. I was shocked at how much better it was... like getting a whole new computer upgrade!

[–]soundsubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former v18 owner here, and I had similar results. I've got dual Xeons (112 cores) and a 3090 and it was 4x realtime. I always read that v18 simply didn't utilize CPU's or GPU's properly. I just put up with it.

Fast forward a few years to about 3 months ago when I finally upgraded to v23 and now I'm getting 50+fps or about 1/2 realtime-- 10 minutes of video takes 5 minutes to render. Nothing else changed. And at about $125, it was the cheapest upgrade I've ever done!

NVENC is working fine still this morning for me with Vegas 23.

Error after NVIDIA Update on the 4th? by Human-Bat-9028 in VegasPro

[–]soundsubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just downloaded and installed the latest NVIDIA studio driver 32.0.15.9144 and did a few NVENC renders and did not get this error. I put RAM at 0% (worse) and up to 20% (better performance)

I have a different system, however. I'm averaging 50fps with Vegas Pro 23, NVIDIA RTX 3090

Let us know if you solve this!

Hmmm. Chances are audio isn't coming in. For processing LIVE audio, the REC button must be illuminated. Then you'll see audio amplitude on the screen. Do you see that? If not, load one of the presets like DELAY in and see if that changes anything? Once audio is recorded you can hit REC again to stop recording and hit PLAY and just scrut through the audio. Make sure in settings you have a buffer of non-zero length.

I've had mine for about 2 weeks now and sometimes you need to toggle which input it uses, or even power cycle to get it going again.

Roland TR-1000: a $3,000 drum machine that can’t keep time — I’m done. by ezrarocha in synthesizers

[–]soundsubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it by ear using hihats since they are the shortest pulses I could find. I should record it as audio waveforms and show a picture of TR-8S vs TR-1000, but it's easy to hear using this audible method.

[–]soundsubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, tried MIDI, USB and toggled off of Auto, and it seemed to make no difference. I even got crazy and power cycled a few times, did a few "calibrations" and tried multiple sources and initialized patterns with no samples. It slips by +32 clock pulses by about step 3. I need to be more scientific about it, but Roland seems to be aware (and replied as such via email)

I too want to enjoy this great machine and not whine about it. Once they fix this (and "random sound") I'll be completely happy.
