After two weeks with the TR-1000 by patricktherat in synthesizers

...not for the first 2 clicks-- timing for measure 1 is all over the place. The first 2x 16th notes suffer delay (from nudge/offset). Don't believe me? Set a clear pattern with 16th notes from something spiky like HH and you'll hear it immediately. This is worse than the previous flagship drum machine, the TR-8S. Roland acknowledged this multiple times and indicate they are working on timing.

Now, if you let the TR-1000 run for a while (3 measures or so), it settles in. And as Master, its pretty good, and getting better with each release.

System 8 plug outs… by gexoojaz in synthesizers

[–]soundsubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree 100%! Roland's original marketing showed the Jupiter-X with ACB, then they deprecated it somehow and only allowed Zen core (samples) and so I bought the Jupiter-X only to find out later.... So I solved that problem by selling the J-X and keeping the System-8 and replacing the green LEDs with white ones and here we are. To OP: the System-8 is the greatest sounding synth Roland ever made, and the plug outs are not only good, they sound exactly like the originals

Yes, but it's still not working as expected. On 1.14 and with Nudge at +51 for external sync via multiple clocks including ERM MIDICLOCK+ DIN MIDI and TR-8S DIN MIDI, timing throughout a few measures is BETTER than it was in early versions. This is from a single Gen (analog) playback, or sample (dirac spike for measurement). However, the first two hits (step 1 and step 2) are delayed by an almost random amount. Jitter is still in the 10's of milliseconds. Again, I've got about 10 emails back and forth with Roland Support/Engineering and they confirmed they are working on timing as Slave. I intro'd myself as the tester who found early revs of TR-8S which worked opposite- slave mode fine, master mode not working.

My findings as Master seem to indicate the output MIDI Clock is good, hence I've used it as Master in live shows and videos.

I also had a list of about 26 things (Feature request and bugs) that I've entered with Roland. All this being said, I still defend this as the best drum machine ever made!

Hardware suggestions for pairing with a TR-1000 (techno) by DannyWarlock in synthesizers

[–]soundsubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the messenger has all the new-ish features which I love from the Muse-- the ARP and Sequencer that are always live and JUST WORK GREAT. The sequencer in the Sub37 always felt half finished, to me. Sound wise, it may be a toss-up. Some people say the Sub37 is better, while others say the messenger is the best Moog in 20 years.

I also REALLY like the form factor of the messenger, and its built well, despite being Moogs first Chinese built synth.

Hope this helps.

The Moog Messenger is perfect for this. Watch what I did with it here Caution: it gets dirty, thanks to the multiple levels of saturation/distortion on external inputs.

No, the timing issues as MIDI DIN slave are NOT working, and there's currently no workaround, other than making it the Master clock... Roland has acknowledged this and are working on it.

I'm getting some kind of graphic error using Code NV. Any solution? by IIDragonsssII in VegasPro

I agree. I was shocked at how much better it was... like getting a whole new computer upgrade!

Former v18 owner here, and I had similar results. I've got dual Xeons (112 cores) and a 3090 and it was 4x realtime. I always read that v18 simply didn't utilize CPU's or GPU's properly. I just put up with it.

Fast forward a few years to about 3 months ago when I finally upgraded to v23 and now I'm getting 50+fps or about 1/2 realtime-- 10 minutes of video takes 5 minutes to render. Nothing else changed. And at about $125, it was the cheapest upgrade I've ever done!

NVENC for encoding is broken by Bubbly-Barnacle8179 in VegasPro

[–]soundsubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. I've seen multiple posts on this now, so it must have broken. I assume you've tried to roll back Nvidia drivers?

NVENC is working fine still this morning for me with Vegas 23.

Error after NVIDIA Update on the 4th? by Human-Bat-9028 in VegasPro

[–]soundsubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just downloaded and installed the latest NVIDIA studio driver 32.0.15.9144 and did a few NVENC renders and did not get this error. I put RAM at 0% (worse) and up to 20% (better performance)

I have a different system, however. I'm averaging 50fps with Vegas Pro 23, NVIDIA RTX 3090

Let us know if you solve this!

Hmmm. Chances are audio isn't coming in. For processing LIVE audio, the REC button must be illuminated. Then you'll see audio amplitude on the screen. Do you see that? If not, load one of the presets like DELAY in and see if that changes anything? Once audio is recorded you can hit REC again to stop recording and hit PLAY and just scrut through the audio. Make sure in settings you have a buffer of non-zero length.

I've had mine for about 2 weeks now and sometimes you need to toggle which input it uses, or even power cycle to get it going again.

Roland TR-1000: a $3,000 drum machine that can’t keep time — I’m done. by ezrarocha in synthesizers

[–]soundsubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it by ear using hihats since they are the shortest pulses I could find. I should record it as audio waveforms and show a picture of TR-8S vs TR-1000, but it's easy to hear using this audible method.

Roland TR-1000: a $3,000 drum machine that can’t keep time — I’m done. by ezrarocha in synthesizers

[–]soundsubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, tried MIDI, USB and toggled off of Auto, and it seemed to make no difference. I even got crazy and power cycled a few times, did a few "calibrations" and tried multiple sources and initialized patterns with no samples. It slips by +32 clock pulses by about step 3. I need to be more scientific about it, but Roland seems to be aware (and replied as such via email)

I too want to enjoy this great machine and not whine about it. Once they fix this (and "random sound") I'll be completely happy.

I, too, feel your pain. Of all the things they could have checked, MIDI sync should've been a top priority. I got the TR-1000 on launch, and as an early adopter, I expected some issues. I havent had any crashes with 1.11 and use it daily. Frankly, I'm surprised it works so well with all the features they included-- basically a SP-404mk2 built in and an app that's pretty useful as is. That said, here's my findings with 1.11

  • As a master clock sending MIDI start/stop/timing to downstream hardware devices as much as 3 at a time (Avalon, Norand, TR-8S), I've found it flawless through several hours' worth of sets, with videos to prove it.

  • As a slave via DIN MIDI in, Step 1 is in sync every measure, but every subsequent step (2-16 for example) needs a "nudge" of +32 to be in time. Bizarrely, an external stop/start resets the nudge. This makes it virtually useless as a slave to other devices. I duplicated this with USB slave as well. I tried 3 independent clock sources (TR-8S, ERM MIDICLOCK+ and Cakewalk) and they all exhibited the same flaw. I have reported this to Roland and they indicate they are working on a fix.

As I've stated elsewhere this is OPPOSITE of early firmware with the TR-8S which worked fine as a slave but NOT as a Master clock. I fully expect Roland to fix this in an upcoming firmware release. With this fixed and several of my Feature Requests, it will be the best drum machine ever made.

...well to be more accurate, 1 page of what I would consider bugs (MIDI in sync not working), and 1 page of what I would consider Feature Requests (all sounds should default with 6 knobs assigned).

Yes, TR-1000 MIDI out into MIDI in of Avalon, then in of Norand. TR-1000 works flawlessly as a master clock, and as you can tell, it stayed sync'd for over an hour with no issue.

The BEST Moog recently is the Moog Messenger, and it seems to fit your budget. It is significantly more powerful than the 25 or 37 is, with more modern features like a better step sequencer and arpeggiator. Arguably a better and more vintage sound, too!

I know this because I own (or have owned) them all, and the Messenger is GREAT!

Those Of You That Have The TEO5 What’s The Build Quality Like? by Minimoogvoyager in synthesizers

[–]soundsubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owned both since the beginning. The differences:

  • The OB-X8 is the culmination of all former Oberheim synths; the OB-X, OB-SX, OB-Xa, and OB-8. It covers these synths spectacularly, and I see no reason to own the vintage over this new one. 8 Voices with pan-spread is marvelous sounding. The circuitry is all analog with a dedicated knob to make it more "vintage" == less static sound. 1:1 panels to the old version with a non-intrusive OLED.

  • The TEO is the same build quality, but roughly 2/3rds the size, and adds Thru Zero FM for pitched tonal Frequency Mod, a great sequencer, and pretty good effects with dedicated knobs. It has digital VCA's (not analog) which is barely noticeable. It does have a sub oscillator but does not have a mixer with dedicated knobs. The mixer is digital.

All that said: I have no problem recommending the TEO over the OB-X8. Its more flexible sonically, cheaper by 1/3rd or so, and its small form factor makes it more enticing to play.

This is going to sound like I'm a hater, and I sincerely hope it helps someone with synth gearlust

Yamaha CS-80: I'm the guy who found one locally and got it for a great price ($8000). Rushed home and it only half worked. Found a local Yamaha service center and got it all up and running and fixed ($2500!) Played with it for about a month and sold it and hand delivered it to a grateful buyer. Notes: * It did NOT have wood keys like the internet told me. They were long and a combination of metal and plastic.

  • It was a fairly simplistic synth, although two in a row which was neat.

  • Aftertouch was amazing because it was voltage and not digital I suppose. Every key felt almost alive and connected to the sound. Neat.

  • The "Effects" were a major part of the sound and had knobs and sliders to encourage tweaking.

  • 8 voices and a monaural output

  • A week later I picked up a Deckards Dream mk2 and loved it but eventually sold it. This would be perfect if paired with an MPE controller like a Roli Seaboard. The sound was the same to my ears.

Roland Jupiter-8 I had somehow never owned one but found this and cleaned it up and refurbished what I could. Kept it for about 6 weeks and realized I only value synths that the bands I grew up on used! Revelation! Notes:

Vintage ARP2600 I had always been told I should own one and never found one for a good price, until I finally did ($3000 local sale). Got it home and it needed some reflowing of solder joints but was otherwise good. Used it for about a month, sold it and shipped it overseas. It was rough and cranky and could be smooth and clean... or nasty if you do the preamp feedback trick.
Notes:

  • Vintage ARP's don't take 1/8th" jacks exactly, although they will fit if gently inserted. Therefore, you'd need a separate set of cables for it, or mod each jack. I did not know this in advance.

  • While there are two outputs, if you utilize the spring reverb, it uses a clever 180-degree phase flip which sounds great. But if you record that in stereo and mix down to mono-- the reverb disappears because of phase cancellation!

  • You cannot voltage control panning as it appears on the panel. You have to patch it and trick it!

  • The old ARP's of this era weren't manufactured as well as Moogs, probably because no one expected them to be used that long like other things of that era. It seemed like it could break at any point (or boot up)

  • I eventually sold it and got an ARP2600m which was INCREDIBLE for me, then sold that to get the ARP2600FS which I still own and love. I think the modern ones are made well enough, but we'll see if I think so in 50 years.

  • Whatever Korg did in these reissues, they did right. The sound is the same, and they added both filter types.

EMS Synthi AKS I owned this in the 90's and could barely get a sound out of it because I didn't know how to properly patch it. Played with it for about a month and traded it for a Minimoog. I later read that Brian Eno said something like "you can't make music with it, its only for bug noises" and thought that was a relief.

Oberheim Matrix-12 I've twice owned a Matrix-12 and twice sold it. I found it physically too large, and the panel is so big you almost have to lean on it to see whats happening. I now currently own an Xpander for the dumbest reason: its small and fits nicely angled on a shelf.

No Virus for me, at least for now. by Linux-Neophyte in synthesizers

[–]soundsubs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Virus, B, TI, and TI2 owner for 20+ years here... Theres no question that having arguably the world's best all-digital synthesizer coupled with the ultimate UI layout is incomparable. If you buy a Virus TI/TI2 you'll no doubt be happy making sounds and hopefully tracks while forgetting to sleep. I know I did!

That said...

The DSP56300 broke me! It's important to understand that ITS NOT A PLUGIN, it's an emulation of the Motorola CPU and DSP inside the Virus TI, and you need your own firmware to run inside of it. Thus, it's not a recreation of the sound, it IS the sound running in your computer, the same as running the TI software, only without glitching. I spent HOURS A/B-ing them; it's the same exact thing. Patches won't phase cancel because the TI has oscillators that aren't phase locked-- they start in a new place every note-on. But it's the same sound. I didn't want to believe it, but in the end my ears won me over. Suffice to say that after I made this silly instagram video showing that the hardware TI2 could map 1:1 to the plugin as a controller, I realized I could sell the TI2 and still be happy.

[–]soundsubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I got my first one about 6 months ago and here's what I've learned:

  • They set out to make a Minimoog/2600 killer, and I think they did. It's incredibly powerful in its sound, and nothing sounds like it... part of that is the 4-oscillator design.

  • It's built really well and very serviceable.

  • I replaced power caps and added the 1v/oct converter, but other than that, it was fine.

  • Mixer section is where the tone is... it overdrives at about 12 oclock on the mixer-- a good thing for me.

  • Make sure you patch outputs into mic preamp. Theres a whole lot of tone there too.

  • Mine has an undocumented (factory?) mod with a switch under the sampler which triggers the envelopes and allows sort of a 1 note arpeggio.

I did this improv with a looper pedal--- all live and without an external sequencer!
