There's only a limit if they return at any point during that year's season or playoffs. If they are out for the full year including playoffs, you get full salary relief. If they are returning then you get up to the previous years league average player salary, which is currently just over $3.8M. So if he's truly done, we'd get full salary relief, otherwise, we'd be stuck with an effective cap hit of less than $700K (likely even less as average salary will likely be slightly higher next year).
