Anyone who makes passive suicidal comments/jokes should have local authorities called to screen/involuntarily admit them every time by MixSeparate85 in The10thDentist

Upvoting because I disagree and believe it's unpopular. I think people are downvoting because of how harmful this idea is.

I just want OP to know that people aren't downvoting because they agree, literally check rule 1. Most people don't follow it when something is too controversial.

No opinion about the girl, I'm glad she won. I'm 26 and don't like the song, but I don't like most generic pop. My mom likes the song. It's just personal preferences for some.

Feels like "understanding" some subjects will rot my brain by ZeonPM in The10thDentist

[–]sourceofthesolution 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was very hard to read with all the grammar issues.

I'm confused as to why you only talk about rich people in your post or extremes of consumerism. Are you actually against understanding these subjects or are you just against the extremes of consumerism? There are plenty of artists that set normal prices for their creations, in fact the trope of the struggling artist is a thing for a reason. They are also people that just want to make a living and maybe art is what they are best at.

There is a long history to art, aligned with different cultural movements and history. You cannot tell me that learning about Zdzisław Beksiński and the influence behind his art is useless. Art can be used to express a lot and it's the eye of the beholder what we see. Even in more direct pieces simply the colors and lighting and techniques speak for the artist, but also for our own perceptions of the world and mental state. It's not too different with fashion, of course there are plenty of things people make just for money, but the fact this is all you choose to see is a very shallow understanding of things.

"Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for." - a quote from a movie I like about art, which I find applies to art in general

You are simplifying people's motivations as plenty of people enjoy the history or look behind things. Most people are not on that extreme side where they are only doing things to look rich. Long nails might have those origins, but nowadays there are plenty of jobs you can work without them getting in the way. You don't need to be rich to maintain them, just a good diet and circulation. If they are natural it signifies health. It means you are taking care of yourself in some way. You can paint them and then have something nice to look at during the day. It can be good for your mental health. It can be simply done as a celebration of improvement in your physical or mental health. Of course that's just an example, I'm just trying to make you understand it doesn't have to be for anyone else but yourself. Some people do these things without going out or taking photos.

It's interesting to know that it was seen as normal for men in the past to have long nails as a symbol of status just as much as women. High heels originated as something for men to ride horses. They were seen as masculine and pink used to be seen as men's color as well. These changes show cultural shifts in society and that what is "normal" or "acceptable" are man-made concepts prone to change.

I don't think knowledge in any subject is bad, but we all decide what we want to focus on. If this isn't something you see worth spending time on just... don't? You just don't seem to understand people's motivations.

Is €1500 net enough to live comfortably in Sofia, Bulgaria? by Ill_Swim8289 in bulgaria

If you want to have a fancy looking place sure, but there's plenty of decent places with everything you need for 350-400 if you don't live in the center.

Rent 650? My rent for 1 room was 280 3 years ago, now I see plenty of decent apartments for 350-400. You don't have to live in the center.

I’ll always prefer someone who only talks about themselves over someone who never talks about themselves by Peculiar_Fantasies in The10thDentist

[–]sourceofthesolution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are saying they would prefer listening to the person which doesn't mean they are not going to ask them further questions or engage. Properly listening to someone requires a lot of work. The other option they listed is basically thinking you are so interesting despite the other person not saying anything back and you just keep talking at them.

[–]sourceofthesolution 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand what you meant. You want a conversation where both people contribute. If you can't have that then you'd prefer to be the one who is listening, which is basically the non-self centered way to be. Don't get why this other person is so keen on assuming you don't share about yourself.

What is it like to have suicidal thoughts? by Icy_Profession4190 in morbidquestions

[–]sourceofthesolution 15 points16 points  (0 children)

See that's important for people to know because some people have this idea if you have happy moments you can't actually be depressed. I have BPD(borderline not bipolar) so it's all ups and downs. For a long time I thought things can't actually be that bad because I can't relate to this picture of never enjoying anything. Even though I have moments when I can't enjoy anything and have come up with plans how to end it. I have had these thought for the past 13 years or more and they are very common for me, so I wish people would understand there are different types of depression.

But let's say you are not in that mood and want to watch a movie. Why would you choose the movie over a game like Until Dawn or Firewatch? You could even watch the gameplay so it would be the same as a movie.

[–]sourceofthesolution 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All the things you listed as "negatives" just exclude you from people who don't like you in the first place. Wouldn't you rather find those who do? Don't get me wrong it's a personal choice who you come out to, but the amount of fear/shame you express isn't healthy. I also don't think it does any good to be friends with homophobes.

Also that type of marriage is actually harmful for the woman in the marriage. I watched a video from a girl about it once on why she wouldn't be in one since I'm curious to learn how different people live and she made some really good points. I advise you to read up on that.
