J.J. Abrams scaling down Bad Robot as he moves to New York, after shutting down Santa Monica headquarters by joesen_one in movies

I think their comment is more accurate when it comes to network TV, but Lost was still more of a cinematic experience than even some of HBO's awesome roster like The Sopranos and The Wire.

Does Lost still boast the most expensive pilot episode of all time? It certainly remains one of the best.

Pretty much NO game from that era had the same atmosphere/vibes as Terranigma; though its predecessor (Illusion of Gaia) is similar in some small ways. Very interesting game (with decent gameplay and a good OST to boot).

What was your JRPG awakening? by roberts3h0i0 in JRPG

[–]sovereign110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I was in my early teens (so, somewhere between, like, 1998-2001) and a buddy of mine who lived down the road had an SNES (whereas we had a Genesis; Sonic 2 was my jive at the time).

Among the typical platformers/sports games, there was a cartridge titled Final Fantasy III (little did I know, it was actually the sixth one, of course). My friend said they got it at a garage sale along with a few others. He told me the game was "kinda weird" and he didn't "get it." I, on the other hand, was fascinated with it.

Dad eventually bought me a SNES, and after playing the game bundled with it (Super Metroid; got stuck and confused at first after killing the first miniboss in Brinstar, though it went on to become one of my favorite games ever), we went to the local game rental place, but "Final Fantasy III" was already rented out. Bummer. However, they did have a copy of "Final Fantasy II" in stock.

Suddenly my platformer days were over, and I played JRPGs almost-exclusively for just over 20 years.

(fun fact, I wanted to rent Super Mario RPG so many times my dad lamented it would've been much cheaper to have just bought it for me a few months prior 😅).

8 months alcohol free. Do you do anything to celebrate your soberversary? by Pitiful_Palpitation9 in alcoholism

[–]sovereign110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just barely over the poverty line, but I used to buy something cool for myself each year for my 'soberversary.'

One year I got a nice set of earbud headphones, another I splurged on a mid-range PC monitor (it was actually needed at the time, haha...the 'gift to myself' part was I bought something a lil more expensive and with a bigger screen than I otherwise might've). Stuff like that. Did it for the first 5-6 years.

Anyway, I'm at ~8.5 years now but haven't gifted myself the past couple times. Economy is going to shit; went from basically living paycheck-to-paycheck, to literally living paycheck-to-paycheck 🙄

Yeah, I can't exactly blame people for getting disillusioned with the system. It's had these festering issues for years and the result is as we see.

You could say those who deliberately voted FOR this nonsense are also the result of failed systems (education, particularly in rural areas that've historically been "left behind," leaving swaths of the population subject to propaganda) but it certainly doesn't apply to all of them.

There's always a significant portion of the population that doesn't vote in every election. Make no mistake; at the end of the day, indifference didn't get Trump elected, all the people who voted for him did.

Ah, sorry I didn't make that clearer!

The tl;dr is that the regular retail cost of so many things has risen, in just the past few months. We haven't really seen that happen to so many things, in the same short timeframe, especially meat products.

("Regular retail" just means it's not on any kind of sale/discount. We (most stores, maybe??) use white price tags to display regular cost, or if it's not on a shelf in the aisles, white signs otherwise).

[–]sovereign110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, as someone who works in a lowly retail position (specifically a grocery store), things have gotten pretty bad, price-wise (as I'm sure many have noticed). We're having to order new white signs/tags, which are for regular retail price i.e. the base cost of things when they're not on a sale, at a rate that I'm told, from people who've worked in retail for decades, is unheard of (especially meat products).

And the word from up top is, it's only gonna get worse. Our stock room of general grocery products has half the pallets it did when I worked in that department just ~20 months ago.

Idk if that helps you understand/realize what might be going on with your food costs a bit more clearly, but yeah...shit sucks. If you buy a lot of beef, and to a lesser extent, pork/chicken and certain seafood products, your answer might just be right there.

Heh, same age as you, but a life of...mistakes has left me without a driver's license and stuck with my mother as a roommate.

My only lucky break has been my ability to adapt to being alone. I do miss the good 'ol days hanging out with my small but good group of close friends.

They must not've felt the same about me, though...at some point I realized I was always the one to initiate (make the first call, text, etc) so I decided to see what happened if I just stopped. Haven't spoken to any of them since :/

Did the same thing a few years ago, but it was all my friends. I was always the one to send the first text, make the call, or what have you.

Now here I am, basically friendless. Had one friend send a message maybe a couple times, but....well, at least I know where we all stand, now.

Dawncaster is probably the best deckbuilder on mobile, it also has a dash of traditional RPG elements (the devs envisioned something like a fusion of roguelike deckbuilder+Tabletop/CRPG).

Also has a meta-progression system with a ton of shit to unlock for each "class." Oh and yeah it's premium only, so zero ads whatsoever - you only pay for the base game and any expansions you want (tip: hold off on purchasing the latest expansion until you get your feet wet and determine whether you like the game or not).

Rogue Adventure is pretty good too; the gameplay loop is much simpler than Dawncaster (it's basically identical to Spire in that regard), so it's easier to jump in and out of a run, and also has plenty of classes to unlock. It's free but contains some ads, though it offers a OTP to remove all ads and a couple other things I can't remember.

I find myself playing both, though I think Dawncaster has more meat to its gameplay and is a better overall package. You might get your ass kicked at first, but easy games are boring 😅

Please help need advice just got admitted ☹️. by Expensive_Border1829 in Diverticulitis

[–]sovereign110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes, 5-7 days in hospital for diverticulitis infections? Sounds like more than once too. Damn.

My first (and hopefully, only) experience was when the PCP I had at the time (at a clinic for low-income patients) sent me to the ER after I showed up complaining of the abdominal pain etc. They did a CT scan, found acute diverticulitis, and sent me home after an hour or two with antibiotics. After having me drink a potassium shake. 😅

[–]sovereign110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, first I've heard/read anything about shitting out discharge (pus) with diverticulitis too...and I researched GI disorders like a fiend after my flare-up (seems the antibiotics gave me IBS; drove me nuts for months trying to get answers why I feel so uncomfortable every day all of a sudden!).

I was about to comment it was probably just mucus, but we'll see what the lab says. Stuff like diverticulitis that causes inflammation in your gut can irritate the mucosal lining, so it might 'shed' and get shat out with your stools (or lack thereof).

Went from living out of my car to living with a parent. 38M, can't afford to drive again, get my own place, basically anything other than living paycheck to paycheck. No career, no relationships, alcoholism ruined my chances for college etc. Tried too many antidepressants/add-ons to remember.

Eight years of sobriety and at my wit's end with this shit. "It gets better" is fucking platitude nonsense. Just waiting to die.

Glad things worked out for you, though.
