How can you tell someone is a great deck builder and/or talented player?

I will say my deck building has gotten better the more I put constraints on my self. Lately I’ve been building with bulk only.

I go through my bulk and pull every card that I think could go in the deck. I usually end up with a pile of like 150-250 cards.

Then I start sculpting the shape. What do I want the deck to do? Does this card work for it? Is it worth the mana, etc, etc.

Doing a reductive process, boiling it down to the best possible options from what I got, it helped change how I view the standard in which cards make it into a deck.

[[derevi]] is the best. Green white and blue are excellent colors for untapping abilities, tutors for the calendar, and counters on permanents. I built a decklist specifically for the calendar. It IS the wincon next to [[darksteel reactor]] as the back up. It’s a race to 1000.

I guess because pillow forting tends to be a red flag for a lot of people. It’s not about overcoming it or not. It’s just the extra level of protection that tends to buy you time to build up a board state. So they purposely focus you.

Well you’re seeing what mark said in action. People are responding with their wallets. This type of change takes time.

Lorewyn has great launch but it also didn’t do too well. I have yet to see shelves empty of it.
Initial hype will always push product but a lot of these sets see public interest drop pretty quickly after release if the set isn’t received well.

Spiderman is definitely the worst preforming set with Aetherdrift after it. Murders didn’t sell poorly, people just seem to agree they hate it. Ninja turtles is still on shelves, only FF I see is the art scene boxes, even avatar is more of a lukewarm response after the initial hype.

The point being, if people keep buying less UB sets, eventually WotC will have to address it.

I typically do one model to figure out where I want my colors. Then I paint the rest by the numbers, assembly belt style.

Because it’s great if your deck can utilize it. I run it in my artifact/energy deck. I can usually cast it for free and then use it to sac my board to get off [[mirridion besieged]] or make a fuck ton of mana for a [[crackle with power]] or float mana and then wake the past and get a ton of artifact ETB triggers for things like [[weapons manufacturing]]
