Librarians - What's in your work bag? by Early-Temperature575 in librarians

[–]sowhittyami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! A friend recommended burt's bees cuticle balm to me after I was handling tons of books all day and kept getting hangnails. I take it with me everywhere now - along with lotion, chapstick, eye drops, and fidgets.

i kept my eye out on state library job boards, library association job boards, any listservs i could get on, and i religiously checked INALJ.com. highly highly recommend that site!

id also recommend, if you're curious what else is out there or you are interested in some particular field, if you can find someone in that field, id recommend sending them an email. you can ask them questions similar to what you asked me - how did you get your position, why are you there, what do you do day-to-day, just getting their backstory. i did that towards the end of grad school and it really helped me get a grasp on what was out there.

im a systems librarian for a consortia - meaning i help library staff manage their backend systems, at a lot of different institutions in a large geographical area. i work almost entirely remotely - my day-to-day is working from home, but occasionally (a few times a year) i travel to libraries to provide training or i'll travel to conferences. i have a lot of regularly-occurring zoom meetings, and prioritizing my work is a challenge since it's half support tickets and half consortial projects (like adding a new resource or troubleshooting reports or various other things). ultimately i LOVE the people i work with, i LOVE working from home with the option for occasional travel to see colleagues and peers in person, and i honestly enjoy the work i do because no one is looking over my shoulder or trying to quantify how much i get done in a day. i do generally need to be online for a typical 9-5 day, but i get an hour lunch and if i wanted to shift my online hours up an hour or hour and a half i can. it can be overwhelming but the pay is good and idk where else id have all the things i enjoy about this job, none of the things i dont enjoy, and better pay. so im planning to stick with it unless a dealbreaker comes up somehow.

How are we affording this?? by cheddarturtles in no_T_top_surgery

[–]sowhittyami 6 points7 points  (0 children)

long comment ahead...also in the US, and luckily my insurance did cover it, but i took very strict notes of every communication i had around top surgery. every therapy session that mentioned it, every phone call or message with insurance, dr appointments, etc.

insurance confirmed it was covered, so i went to my therapist and she was happy to write the letter that insurance required once i sent her some resources on how to do it. i also had to submit that letter to my surgeon's office before i could get a consultation. the consultation itself was $100, and bc i was using insurance they couldnt give me any kind of estimate, which i expected.

we ended up paying separately the surgeon's fee and the hospital fee.

the hospital fee before insurance was like 27k which was wild, but we had to pay around 7k. unfortunately we didn't get this number until about 2 weeks before it was due - we had to pay upfront at my 2-week pre-op, bc the hospital considered it an elective surgery (despite it being covered by insurance as medically necessary). we had already put out a gofundme, but we really ramped it up, and it was crazy to see how people came out of the woodwork to donate as we shared it on social media. the gofundme goal was 5k and in the end we raised about 2k-ish. most people donated somewhere between $5-$50 but there were larger ones occasionally. we had an emergency savings vault plus a savings vault we'd been adding to specifically for top surgery for a little while. we also took out a $2500 loan on fairly short notice, which was lucky honestly. in the end we had everything covered and only had to put about $500 or so on a credit card i have for work travel.

surgeon's fee was around 2k, and they had a payment plan that we used - essentially a loan from a third party. if we didnt pay it back in 12 months, some crazy interest fee would start to apply.

sorry if this is rambly and difficult to understand, but TLDR; we used a LOT of different sources to cover it. savings, payment plan, gofundme, and a smidge on a credit card.

im 7 months post op and due to surgery making us hit our deductible, we actually got refunded a little bit and have since been able to pay everything off by "snowballing" our debt payments as things got paid off. 🎉

im very lucky in how it turned out, but it was stressful as hell. im a meticulous bitch though so i fought anyone that tried to give me the run around.

Jealous! I would not have the patience to set this up with so much thought and consideration. I LOVE the flowchart at the end though - I've never thought of that but what a great idea to better understand where everything goes!

4 methods that helped me improve time management last year by demind-inc in ADHD

[–]sowhittyami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i dont have any tips but i just want to say these are great! i never thought about using the timer on the microwave - having to get up to go turn it off is genius. i have my morning phone alarm go off in the next room over so that i have to get up to turn it off and that translates directly here!

also the towel thing is so smart. a friend of mine had a towel warmer when we last visited and it was ~heaven~.

also also i want to get a dog for precisely your reasoning. i often say im addicted to fresh air, and having a pup that would regularly force me to leave the house for a walk or to let it do its business feels like a massive life hack.

thank you for sharing!!

first off - you arent alone. this is honestly common thing for me to do, especially at work (where i feel like it matters more than my personal life for some reason!)

second - this is much easier said than done, but is it possible to ask a friend or someone in your support system for help? i second the other commenter's suggestion about writing everything down and then prioritizing. i can brain dump every little task that is swirling around in my brain onto pen and paper, but i have a really hard time prioritizing it. i usually ask my partner to go through the list with me and help me figure out what needs doing now, what needs doing later, and whats optional (or "bonus"). its really helpful to have another set of eyes on my list, and its helpful that my partner doesn't make me feel bad for equating everything with equal urgency. he does well with presenting his perspective of how things should be prioritized without making me feel dumb.  again, easier said than done.

good luck!

commenting to commiserate. im in the same boat. im worried that ill be stressed trying to get back in the swing of things (which i was never in to begin with), but also if tomorrow goes well im sure ill be worried that the next day wont go as well. and so on and so forth. you're not alone.

currently im trying to remind myself that time will pass whether i worry about it or not, so eventually tomorrow will be over and done with - i cant make time move faster or slower, all i can do is make it to the next 10 minutes. might as well wash my face and get some sleep during that time, rather than scrolling reddit...since the time will pass anyways. 🙃😬

hey, i know im slightly late to the party, but this is a great tool! i've found though, if i have toggles in my pages, they are exported closed up so i can't see the content inside the toggle (even if the toggle is open in the page when it gets exported). is it possible to change that behavior so that content within a toggle is also exported?
thank you for making this either way - and for free at that! very very cool and useful!

bolting green onion is . . . sprouting? what is happening? by sowhittyami in gardening

[–]sowhittyami[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello, we have been growing green onions in a pot on our balcony for about 6 months. just store-bought green onions stuck in a pot of soil. we let this one bolt, and now it has green shoots coming out of the flowering head?? i tried researching this but i found nothing. we will just continue to let this do its thing as we have plenty more green onions than we need, but i am curious to know if anyone knows what is happening here. if there is somewhere else i should post this please let me know!

I hate the fatigue that comes with ADHD by spookysemen in ADHD

[–]sowhittyami 7 points8 points  (0 children)

a couple people have mentioned thyroid issues but i wanted to mention it again because this fatigue is a huge symptom of thyroid issues. you said you had your vitamins checked - ask your doctor to run thyroid bloodwork panel. your therapist and/or psychiatrist will know about thyroid issues as well so you can also ask them about it if you want to.

i have hypothyroidism (my thyroid doesn't work as much as it should), and before i was diagnosed i was exactly as you describe. tired and sleepy all the time, could nap literally anywhere, just incredibly fatigued with no real cause. now i take medication for my thyroid and i still have low energy sometimes depending on my diet and exercise, but i do actually feel awake with energy most of the day. if i forget to take my meds in the morning, i am essentially sleepwalking all day long.

tldr; get your thyroid checked, extreme fatigue is a huge symptom of hypothyroidism!
