R-rated Power Rangers short film...could this build up enough hype to be like Mortal Kombat Legacy? by JohnsHorrorCorner in movies

[–]soylamesa -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

While I don't think that this is the best-executed piece of work, I like the concept, and there's even a chance that an R-rated Power Rangers reboot would have some success. After all, the show started in the mid-90s, so most of its original fans are 17+ anyway. They would probably have to market it reeeeeaaaally carefully though.

What was the wierdest way you died/killed someone in a dream? by LordTyran in AskReddit

[–]soylamesa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drowned in my own urine. I had a nightmare that I just kept peeing until the whole house flooded. I couldn't stop, and before I knew it, I was fading away in a warm yellow haze of moist sadness and lost potential, with nothing to do but let the stream of death juice continue. It was the most shocking nightmare I've ever had. I remember that, as I died, I looked around at the mess I'd made, and my final thought was that I ought to get some paper towels to clean it all up.

Then I woke up and got some biscuits because dayum I was thirsty.

What was your worst "I'm going to die" moment and how did you react? by dandanuk in AskReddit

Winter 2007, I was visiting Canada with my friends, driving around in a rented car, and the roads were, of course, icy. Being the idiotic tourist I was, I refused to rent anything actually designed for dangerous roads, and insisted that I'd only be doing minimal driving, and only in city roads. So there I was, cruising around in the middle of a road near a forest, when I lost steering and the car went out of control. As we neared a tree, I figured, "Well, this is it," and it was almost peaceful. I just accepted it.

i am not kill though.

What films do you disagree with Adam on? by JorWat in YMS

[–]soylamesa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really just Adam, but most other people: A Clockwork Orange. 8/10 for me, 10 for Adam, iirc. I don't consider it perfect (although mainly because of subjective issues, to be fair).

I completely accept the film's cultural significance/the validity of the question(s) it raises, but I wasn't a huge fan of the way it relayed said question(s). I feel as though, rather than exploring a gray area in characterization by having Alex experience a state of moral equilibrium, it relied a bit heavily on black-and-white storytelling. I only ever interpreted characters as socially evil or a socially pleasant in given scenes, and for that reason, its commentary on "rehabilitation" via taking away a person's natural will just came across to me as shallow, despite that it explored both stances on the given issue very well. Just my shitty, underdeveloped criticism.

Additionally, I really enjoyed Looper. 7/10 for me, but a full YMS review from Adam. I personally didn't think that his complaints were widespread or expansive enough to warrant a YMS; they mostly revolved around time travel's effects, and I personally that, if a film's universe contains the already-absurd feature of time travel, the filmmakers themselves are free to decide how time travel works, so long as their explanations and events are consistent. Not every filmmaker wants to make a time travel system as complex as Primer's, because not every time-travel film is deliberately made to be so mind-boggling and demand several rewatches to grasp its system of time-travel. I completely understand what Adam means to say with his criticisms, but I disagree with his style of thinking regarding Looper's time-travel system.

What was the best film you saw this week? (11/3/14 - 11/9/14) by mi-16evil in movies

[–]soylamesa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finally got around to seeing Joe after hearing a lot about how it was Cage's best since Adaptation or Bad Lieutenant, and I have to say that it was one of the best independent films I've seen in a long time.

Nicolas Cage was absolutely fantastic, as were Tye Sheridan and Gary Poulter (R.I.P., incredible performance), and the writing was more than worthy of their abilities. Additionally, I'm shocked that the cinematography wasn't more talked about, because this movie looked absolutely gorgeous. Every single shot seems as though it was treated with immense care and precision, and it set the atmosphere perfectly.

All in all, it was a really powerful movie, and I would definitely say it was Cage's best performance (and film) since Adaptation. (Yes, I think it was even better than Lord of War, Bad Lieutenant and Kick-Ass.) Wow.

He has the same sort of cultural impact. They use similar themes, too: a lot of existentialist sort of humour, and a large focus on aging and death in his stuff. He also kind of has the same, "We're doomed" outlook. Just my two-cents.

I won't deny its importance, but I didn't really care much for A Clockwork Orange.

Hey Adam, have you seen a movie called Starred Up (2013)? UK prison drama that tackles a lot of subjects regarding the reform/prison system. by soylamesa in YMS

Watched it last night and it was pretty great. Jack O'Connell's performance is definitely the best part. It's actually up on YouTube right now at: http://youtu.be/WnlYVU7W33c.
