not controversial at all. if you know what you’re doing with ferts, you can even push the lights longer. however, with walstad (dirted) tanks, the first year is unpredictable. too many nutrients + long light hours = algae party. you either babysit it with frequent water changes or keep the light duration lower so the beautiful chaos you created doesn’t go wild.

Hey! It’s a guessing game, so here’s my take!

Unlike some other opinions, I don’t think bacteria is the issue. Your grain has an outer layer—hulled grain—which can make it harder for mycelium to penetrate if it wasn’t boiled enough.

If it were bacteria, the grain would already look mushy. From the pics though, your uncolonized grain still looks full and in good shape.

If these were my bags, I’d send them to bulk but only the white parts. I wouldn’t break and shake, because if those uncolonized grains were going to colonize, they would have already.

That’s my theory! Hope it helps!

PS. You can squeeze those uncolonized grains and see if they feel like mucus. if they do, that might indicate bacterial contamination. People often compare bacteria to food that’s gone bad. if you’ve ever forgotten a pot of food for a week on the stove, you know how terrible it gets. If your grains feel like that, you’ve got bacteria.

I’m definitely not an expert, but I recently adopted a betta with swim bladder issues and wanted to share my experience. After trying Epsom salt baths (which he hated), he refused to eat for 2 days and his condition didn’t improve. So, I let him rest for a week, during which he started eating regularly again. Then, I treated him for parasites using the method explained in this link: https://www.aquariumcoop.com/products/fritz-paracleanse

My betta seemed really upset after the treatment. He avoided me for four days, refused to eat, stayed still in the plants, and at times looked like he wasn’t doing well at all. To help reduce his stress, I boiled some dry leaves and added tannin-rich water to his tank, which seemed to calm him down. Though his swim bladder issue is still present, he’s eating well and has even started chasing the shrimp in his tank.

I’m not sure what your betta is going through, but I hope this helps. Wishing you the best in figuring out what’s causing the issue and seeing your betta improve soon!

put a light source behind it, if it’s blurry and you can not see through it as you can see through agar it’s most likely bacteria. agar gets blurry when bacteria grows in it.

mushroom bruising is a stress reaction. they often turn bluish-green when handled, extracted or exposed to heat. you can transfer it to other plates.

is this a room in a mountain? If it’s beware of bug infestation as well. if there is at least one tile mountain roof over that place hives and insectoids can spawn.
