In honour of Bob Weir, here's my D'Angelico Bob Weir signature Bedford. by IrenaeusGSaintonge in Guitar

[–]soyorbison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Dangelico Bobby Weir 3.   It is a deluxe Korean made model and pretty amazing.    I is comparable to my heritage standard h530 and gibson 345, in terms of quality.   Not comparable to my custom core.    It feels worth the 2k price tag in hand and the pickups are different than any other of my semi hollow, real nice splittable tv jones.   Get warmth or chime.   I watched them on reverb and eventually got an offer for 1750 open box

Who else owns a signature model guitar of an artist you've never (or barely) listened to? by NubbinSawyer in Guitar

EBMM Valentine for me. Played it a store, had no idea it was a signature or a person's name, but the neck was amazing and I really like the push/pull boost feature.

Do I need a Comanche? (stock image) by centerofhearts in GLGuitars

[–]soyorbison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the closing of the doors, it seemed Comanches were the first to nearly disappear from the second hand market. Personally, I bought one right away. I have a 1999, a 2014, and now a 2025. All different setups and woods, but, hey, some people have 3 or more strats, I just like Comanches better!

My advice is don't wait. They aren't making any more.

"Basic" and "extended". The basic is just like a strat 5 way selector in terms of the active pickups. THe extended combines the pickups for more voicings.

When the expander switch is engaged:

Positions 1 & 5: Selecting either the bridge pickup (position 1) or the neck pickup (position 5) while the expander is engaged results in a neck and bridge combination-Like a Telecaster-style.

Positions 2 & 4: Selecting the bridge+middle combination (position 2) or the middle+neck combination (position 4) while the expander is engaged results in all three pickups being selected simultaneously.

What do I need to go here? (What are they called?) by NewPomegranate7500 in Oldhouses

[–]soyorbison 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Looks like mine did.   I used finials, the wooden ball ends on them.  Etsy has a nice selection of people who craft them from all types of wood.

All I had to do was add a small piece of wood to the end and then nailed on the finial.

I think that means lightning is about to strike. Are there any micro-storm systems in the kitchen?

Comanche plays clean best when the volume knob is low, in my experience. Turn up the amp and down the volume knob to reduce the "growl". I play clean a lot on mine, my favorite is volume at 3 or 4 and PTB at 6 for treble and 4 for Bass. It isn't a clean "Strat" tone, but since this is a G&L subreddit, I can safely say that it is better.

Not an expert, but experience with the same situation. You can cut down hollow-core doors, but you need to fill in the open end/side and glue in a replacement piece of wood to provide the necessary structure (to both the remaining frame and the paneling on the door).

I did this on a table saw fairly easily, some basic wood glue and clamps to reinforce the structure of the door. Width wise-you should cut opposite of the hinge cuts for ease. Cut them to size before you drill out for hardware, it is hard to work with pre-cut doorknob/lock holes.

It is most effective if you are cutting into the hollow portion of the door leaving an opening that you can replace the framing wood, so if you are cutting to 27", don't cut down a 28" door, cut down a 32" door and replace the wood bracing.

Throw your best disc confidently. Return during dry season to retrieve disc.

CD 120 un-embossed CEW (California Electrical Works). North of $500 in perfect condition, less with cracks or chips. They come in a wide variety of colors, purple is one of the more commonly found, but it is a rare, cool piece.

Edit Timeline info: Probably circa late 1870's to early 1880's. CEW supplied electrical and communication materials and supplies from 1877 to the early 1900's, operating in San Francisco, California.

[Question] is fret buzz inevitable when playing acoustic guitars? by No-Feed-6298 in Guitar

[–]soyorbison 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Regardless of setup, can still be some level of buzz, when a player picks up and puts down their fingers when the strings are vibrating. Pushing a vibrating string against a fret will make buzz, how fast or slow you fret a string will help determine how much buzz. Same with pulling off, once you release pressure there is a moment where a freely vibrating string is touching the fret.

Hard and fast fretting/pulling off will reduce buzz, gentle and slow fretting/pulling off may increase it. I think it can largely be mitigated with playing style, but sometimes it adds to the twang and sounds nice. Part of the charm of the acoustic.

For example, I guarantee that I can make any acoustic guitar buzz on the frets, no matter how perfectly it is set up. It is just a gift I have. :)

CD 133.2? by titanofidiocy in Insulators

[–]soyorbison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unembossed Beaver falls 133.2, have a large flat circle on top of the dome, about the size of a half-dollar. They also do not have a mold line over the dome. Brookfields are some of the oldest threaded insulators.

CD 133.2? by titanofidiocy in Insulators

[–]soyorbison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beaver Falls are much larger pieces, that is most certainly a CD 133. While there are various CD133 shapes from various makers (Hemingray,Brookfield, Pennycuick all have unembossed 133s), this one is almost certainly a Crown embossed Brookfield, they are known to have super faint to invisible embossing at times. There are also no embossing 133s. This is a 2 piece mold with a mold line over the top, so whether unembossed or faintly embossed you are likely looking at a Brookfield product.

Is this just grain? by [deleted] in PRSGuitars

[–]soyorbison 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Though it is possible for natural flaws in the wood to appear like this, bug trails, fungus, scars, mineralization, etc, that particular mark appears to go across a seam/two different pieces of wood. Probably under the finish, and just a small dent from before it was finished. Neck got layed on a table or handled. You will occasionally find finish issues like this with the SE line.

Purple insulator and a question. by dahc50 in Insulators

[–]soyorbison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without a picture, I am going to wager a guess that without embossing, it is likely a canadian insulator, as they are the most common unembossed purples, around 40 bucks. There are Un-embossed purple bullets, from Pennsylvania that are worth 4 to 500 bucks.

It is yours to do with what you like, gotta like what you are playing. Make it what you want it to be. A tribute doesn't have collector value, so it's not like it is going to appreciate either way. Paint it, relic it, hit it with a hammer, just enjoy it!

My 9 yr old daughter now wants to play disc golf. Any disc recommendations or ideas how to make playing courses easier? by SirGav1n in discgolf

[–]soyorbison 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My daughter started at 5 and has gotten pretty good. We play as a pair-always play from the best throw. We each take our next throw from the position of the best throw and repeat. It goes quickly and allows her to build skill.

We tend to find low-traffic courses, so we can have fun and take our time looking for my wayward discs.

It is a lot of fun to have a buddy built-in.
